The big problem with wrestling is that outside of school theres not much wrestling. So as an adult who didnt wrestle in high school I had no chance to learn wrestling other than going to a bjj gym and finding people who had done wrestling in school then asking them questions. Where are the adult hobby wrestling clubs?
Folkstyle wrestling is the best foundation for grappling, i won my first Jiujitsu tournament using pure wrestling against two blue belts. The top control, wrist and Leg rides, and versatile takedowns are invaluable
Wrestlers are tough man. I have zero experience wrestling but I do BJJ and they just smother you with weight distribution and pressure! I’m humble enough to accept that they have so much to offer technique wise and would love to learn wrestling as well. Good stuff.
When I started BJJ as a wrestler no gi Guys who had less than a year training couldn’t do nothing with me Blue belts could only submit me , once I was tired I was still able to out wrestle purple belts ,but once again they have to get me tired first or wait for me to make mistakes Brown and black belts I still could out wrestle them standing but they submit me within seconds of hitting the ground
I don't think it's a mere coincidence that they were no wrestlers chosen for that historic UFC 1 match in 1993. I respect wrestlers a great deal. Like boxing, that sport is about that "grind".
32 UFCs champions were wrestlers and 17 are jujitieros( BJJ black belts). What’s become a greater problem is the growth of the sport of Jujitsu. People don’t know, that in the 70s-80s in Brasil, Jujitieros competed in Judo, Luta Livre etc. There was no NAGA, ADCC etc. It was never a sport. Honestly, wrestling is the oldest martial art. Every culture wrestled. You can find wrestlers in the Amazon jungle or in the west coast of Africa.
I've been training 40 years now. Foundation is Jujutsu, Old Judo, and Kenpo. I've crossed trained with wrestlers, and they are beast! Teach a wrester some Jujutsu / Judo joint locks.....F' scary 😨! Respect 🙏
Folkstyle is the direct descendent of Catch as Catch Can or Catch Wrestling. Catch actually used to be an Olympic Sport alongside Greco Roman. You can still see shadows of the removed submissions in moves like the Guillotine, the Banana Split, etc.
I absolutely respect your opinion, and I firmly believe that wrestling is an extremely effective martial art. However, based on my experience, I have successfully applied chokes on many wrestlers I've grappled with in a context where punches aren't allowed. Additionally, in the Bo Nickel and Gordan Ryan match, it appeared that Jiu-Jitsu had the advantage. Nevertheless, in a direct confrontation between a wrestler and a Jiu-Jitsu practitioner, I am confident that the wrestler holds the upper hand.
Sir I agree with you and from watching your videos all of them I have decided to learn wrestling and judo also. But I disagree with some points here: Wrestling/Judo dominates BJJ in standing game only. Talking about submission and ground game, BJJ works better than wrestling and judo. Pure BJJ fighters who only know jiujitsu are very inefficient in takedowns and standing game strategies. Moreover I appreciate your contents. Pure Gold. ❤❤❤
Wrestling sets you up perfectly for strikes on the ground Concrete is un forgiving , a slam can knock you out As a former wrestler with out much thought , I can think of of 20+ ways to take someone down , with out going down with them Even if so I’d already be in position to strike
As a BJJ blue belt (3 years) I cant argue with this. Im a believer in less is more and like you've said with boxing doing something to mastery is best. Too bad wrestling is not available for adults as much as BJJ is.
Anyone on comments tell me why adults don't continue wrestling and why BJJ dominates with comps for adults. Done BJJ myself. Cannot find a wrestling club with adults. All kids.
Salam ustad the problem is that people think BJJ is be all end all, they just market themselves well. People forget other arts such as Judo, Sambo, Catch, Luta livre not everything is jiu jitsu but people stick to it because of all the marketing and programming. Especially no-gi which is not BJJ but more like Catch and luta livre. Its a big world and a lot of BJJ players would not survive in tge world of Judo yet to still see a BJJ player transition to Olympic Judo and do well.
a good wrestler can always take down a BJJ guy. you should always start in wrestling and than add some bjj to the arsenal. i got my 5 year old boy I want to get into wrestling freestyle and muay Thai for his personal training. he will thank me later in life for it
Excellent insight. IMHO the meta of high level grappling competition right now IS wrestling. Just found your channel recently and really enjoying the content. Appreciate you.
Very informative video, if you are speaking in general terms I would have to agree, especially when it comes to Traditional Gi BJJ. I'd like to argue that modern NoGi Jiu Jitsu (what I practice) is more-so Catch Wrestling in modern times, but with more attacks. I believe ADCC is doing a great job of pushing wrestling to NoGi which makes practitioners much grittier than 10-20 years ago. I'd also like to argue that Wrestling needs some knowledge of JiuJitsu in order to be successful in MMA. If you take a Pure Wrestler vs a Pure BJJ athlete (Neither has striking) then the BJJ athlete SHOULD win if the skill levels are comparable. If the Wrestler keeps the fight standing, then he needs to out-strike the BJJ athlete (no longer grappling, whoever has the better striking wins). If the Wrestler takedown the BJJ athlete, he needs submission knowledge & defense (no longer pure wrestling) Wrestling by itself is not great, but Wrestling paired with Striking or BJJ is a recipe for a champion (same goes for BJJ paired with Wrestling or Striking)
Insightful comments regarding passivity. The culture of wrestling cannot allow a backstep...except maybe as a setup. It used to be a step back would bring the stalling warning poste haste. I enjoyed my first taste of your content!
Without question the most well reasoned and clearly stated rationale for holding a specific opinion in regard to H2H combat systems I have ever encountered. Brilliant, simply brilliant.
I will disagree on the assumption that wrestling has less technical skills to master. The skills number in the hundreds, and similar to BJJ, new techniques are still being developed or reimplemented.
@opaca512: You are wrong. Wrestling has far fewer techniques to master. What you are seeing are moves strung together. BJJ can have 600 SEPARATE techniques . Not so each style of wrestling SEPARATED! Nice try though. This is a former full scholarship wrestler talking.
Only made it to the 3 minute mark but I agree with everything said. Knowing the price point of BJJ approx $200/month, most young folks can't swing that monthly due, what we have is older folks that's more financially stable getting into JJ and loving it! It's going to be hard as hell teaching Masters 2/3... folks the fundaments of wrestling, just the fundamentals will break them! Now I would have titled this video 'Wrestling is better than BJJ for MMA'.
@kedah2398: If you only made it to the 3 minute mark, this channel is not for you. Next, I wrestle and I am 62. Perhaps you think the only move in wrestling is the high C. Lastly, I named the video, what I had on my mind. And that is: "Wrestling destroys BJJ". Because it does. When you have something to offer, you name the videos what you want. Otherwise, come here to learn.
@@TheUmmahFightCamp I'm not negating that Wrestling beats BJJ, I wholeheartedly agree with you there so much so that I'm not even going waste time teaching my daughters BJJ maybe in the off season. With that said, sorry I couldn't give your video more time, there's only a 2-3 min window to make you pitch before I invest time watching but good work, I'll be looking out for more of your stuff...
The Gracie's always feared good wrestlers don't get me wrong I love BJJ it's still fun to watch and see all the submission holds done Don Frye was another MMA fighter that utilized wrestling and you can learn the BJJ from judo since the Gracie's learned it from a judo master count maeda misspelled his name probably but you get the idea
I love wrestling, played Rugby in HS and the blast double leg and the ability to drag someone to the floor is great. The main problem is beyond school theres no wrestling academies for adults, and honestly they probably wouldnt do well because the average adult doesnt want to grind down their body for sake of a sport. Its extremely effective in one on one combat but it destroys your knees and back. Yes its effective but highly impractical to train for the hobbist who, lets be honest, are the ones keeping the lights on in the gym.
Truth be told the best street fighters are wrestlers and bare knuckle boxers ( that can actually box) If you're good at BJJ you slow a wrestler down because he has to catch and respect the techniques. Bo is nasty peace if work also. Catch is dope also.
Daniel Cormier should be in that list! Olympic wrestler and he became champion despite the fact he didn’t start MMA until his 30s 😂😂😂BJJ usefulness is in its submission defense and giving you options off of your back but it should be secondary to the wrestling
The title alone brought me here. I ALWAYS BELIEVED THIS! ! ! I haven't watch this yet (Im about to), but my opinion, wrestling's athleticism and explosiveness is a better element get good at, Wrestling is better for athleticism and explosiveness. 7:18 #2: I appreciate this #2 breakdown
I really felt that cardio comment. I am a beginner at Chinese wrestling (Beijing Shuaijiao) and even practicing requires stamina. I'm a hobbyist but I am trying to up my training because my cardio sucks. Trying not to be thrown, getting thrown, then getting back up right away is taxing and hard.
Your logic, including the visual evidence you've just shown.....is undeniable. I don't believe there can be any realistic argument against this. Your point is forever solidly made in my very humble opinion. It will be interesting to see what the response could even possibly be from the Brazilian Jujitsu crowd. Perhaps they will be wise this time and remain silent from here on. Great presentation.
Bjj coachwhen your on bottom- do the 15 steps of this "technique". Wrestling coach when your on bottom- win the grip fight, seek head height, seek hip height...hip heist. It's simple but not easy.
I agree with you completely. The problem with BJJ is it has moved so far away from street application and into a sport. Ask any BJJ if they've ever thrown a punch lately. And notice all the butt scooting? It's absurd. Things have become cult-like. Try telling an Aikidoist that their art doesn't work, and watch the reaction. Same thing.
I don’t watch cage fighting. With the exception of Demetrius Jones who I have not seen compete, I mentioned every name you did almost in the same order. I also immediately thought of Silva and Fedor as the two outliers when you said 18 of 20 of the all time greats were wrestlers.
Very true and this is a guy who’s been doing Jiu Jitsu for 2 years, wrestlers are bred different. The pressure and understanding body mechanics, and also speed. It’s definitely enough to worry jujutsu competitors in the near future or you can say it’s already here.
I started martial arts before wrestling so I had a hard time breaking that specific habit, even with my high school coaches screaming at me "Get off your back Rosie!"
