My then teen son bought me an Invicta. Yes, I do wear it! It isn’t “my favorite”, but it does remind me of my most important role: being a dad! (And Invicta got him into “being cool” with watch wearing)
I was just a child when I received my first watch I'll never forget the amazement of the second hand moving the ticking sound that it made telling time was like a diary if you will. I wear watches because time is the essence of existence.
Steve Texas Time is the essence of existence. That's brilliant. Can I borrow that? I'm going to steal it anyway. You can have " why is commonsense " so uncommon?
6. Watches are one of the few men's accessories you can wear that you won't get laughed at for wearing. Earrings? These will still get you laughed at in certain circles. Rings besides your wedding ring? Laughed at in certain circles. But watches? Unless it's an obviously fake Rolex (or an Invicta, in certain circles), not so many laughs.
I wear a watch because as a Amazon delivery driver time is ESSENTIAL! Gotta keep track of time in between deliveries 📦 I love wearing my G Shock in more urban areas and I wear my Seiko 5 in slightly nicer areas 👍
*The Moment I realized that mentality is the reason behind Success.* I started to look at the bigger picture. Suddenly a watch started to look appealing to me. Among other things. I started wearing the watch my dad gifted me on finishing my Master's degree.
ALERT! Don't listen to this man. He's not telling you the truth... WATCHES ARE ADDICTIVE! I got involved in the hobby about a week ago and I already own five watches. I'm not joking on this one. I started about a week ago and already have five watches. Love em and will ALWAYS wear a watch until the day I die. Thanks Jory for always making me smile!
About 6 weeks ago, my car club went on our annual cruise, and ine of the guys gave us watch guys shit all weekend...... we got together and bought him a watch, hes got like 16 or 17 now. Same thing happened with my girlfrie ds bestie too lol.
I enjoy watches becsuse Im a mechanical guy, I like that a watch is an intricate machine that you wear on your wrist and the thought of the engineering that goes into them blows my mind.
The complications are cool. I love the moon phase complication because it looks cool, even though I have no reason to know what the moon phase happens to be.
Stopped wearing watches and lost interest when I got my 1st cell phone, just found my old g shock 5600 and totally reignited my love of watches. Great channel man
Watches are purely fascinating pieces of machinery and art combined. Whether simple or complex, low cost or expensive, they provide a service that no cellphone or smart watch can match. The fact that I own a 1902 American Waltham Watch Company hunter case pocket watch that still works boggles my mind. And, yes it is a family heirloom.
my dad who passed in '67,(I was 14) never wore a watch, he was a pocket watch guy, a Chef, he never got to explain why, but did impressed on me to know what time it is, taught me how to tell time via that pocket watch. It was stolen, so I never wanted to feel vulnerable, always preferred wristwatches. When I got my first Corp job in banking, 3 piece suits, Tissot gold chronograph still have it. my coworker was a watch fan, had a vintage Bulova from the 50s! It was 20 years old when he showed me!
I was talking about watches with a former undercover narcotics officer who said he stopped wearing a watch because he was undercover for so long and people in the drug culture generally don’t wear watches. Another reason to wear a watch is to not be profiled by law enforcement as a drug user
I'm not a big watch enthusiast because I can't wear a watch (or any jewelry) at work. I do have a couple inexpensive watches that I wear when I'm not at work. I don't need them because there are literally clocks everywhere these days (cell phones, cars, computers, wall clocks, etc.) BUT I wear them because I am fascinated by the precision and technology inside them. It's amazing to me that someone can create a device that keeps time with extreme accuracy and fits inside a case that is smaller than a matchbox.
I’ve really always worn a watch but when I became an enthusiast I enjoy looking at my pieces on my wrist and when someone inquired about the watch it’s fun to talk to them about it also just because it’s the easiest way to tell time
Jory, thank you for helping me with so many things. I am new to the hobby. Started about a week ago and just got my 5th watch in yesterday. My son Marshal has been collecting for probably over a year and now he has me loving watches all over again. When I was younger I always wore a watch. I'm 57 so my high school years were 1975 though 1979. Lots of Timex and Casio watches! I had purchased some World War II videos and the set came with a watch. My son got me a G Shock and it has gone from there. He made a recommendation so I purchased an Orient Bambino. I also bought a Timex weekender. My son and I love cigars so we went to a Cigar shop that also sells watches. They actually have a very nice assortment and I ended up buying a Bolova special edition Frank Lloyd Wright in rose gold (only 250 made). I went to buy (I saw it on their website) a Maurice de Mauriac watch but when I got there this thing was 48mm and it was just too big! Anyways.... I LOVE YOUR CHANNEL. I AM A NEW SUBSCRIBER AND YES I HIT THE LITTLE BELL TO GET ALL THE NEW RELEASES! Last but not least.... I will be on vacation with my three kids in New York from August 4th to the 11th. My niece Bonnie Milligan has one of the leads in the new Broadway musical Head Over Heels and we're going out to see her perform. I wanted to see if you would consider allowing my son and I to buy you lunch and talk watches. Would absolutely make our trip so wonderful. Currently of the dozen or so people I have listened to on RU-vid the only ones I subscribe to and listen to every day are you and TGV with the Urban Gentry. Well take care and again thank you for your invaluable input into our hobby. You make me want to buy more watches!!!!! LOL and I love it! Also if you want to contact me my email address is jamebkm80@msn.com.
despite working in the watchmaking(manufacturing components) world for almost 7 years( currently at ETA), only recently i felt the watch bug! i almost always had a watch but nothing serious. Just bought " A Man and is Watch" and i'm loving it. Love your content and your rants!
Its a great question with many answers that all somehow - don't seem truly explain it -. - but I have to say I really enjoy learning from the ideas and thoughts of other watch enthusiasts who share there opinions and experience - its like getting something truly enlightening for free. 👍.
Hi, Jory, great video! One thing that always amaze me is how you can elegantly pull of a #1500 with a 7”1/2 wrist while me, with a 6” 3/4, am afraid of buying smaller than my 36mm #16200. Thanks for inspiring us to think outside the box!!
I bought my second watch after 2 years about 2 weeks ago...I now have 6 watches and I absolutely love them! I understand a lot of people hate invictas and that is completely understandable but, with that being said I love the pro diver watches that I have purchased. They are absolutely stunning and they keep time very well. I’ve already taken them out on the lake/in the pool and they held up flawlessly. I also purchased two g-shocks and a fossil automatic. Next on the list is a seiko automatic and a watch case 😂 Thank you Jory for helping with my new addiction and Happy 4th of July!
Honestly, the Invicta Pro Diver is what got me interested in watches in the first place. I'm not a fan of their larger bulky watches, but I'll always remember this watch specifically for bringing me into the watch community.
First off g-shock gang bc I work outdoors and am outdoorsy. 1) its quicker than pulling out ur phone and turning on the screen 2)I love having a stop watch on my wrist when cooking 3) I'm blind af w/out glasses and I can check the time in middle of the night when I wake up 4)its hella convenient to have when ur in a shower trance in the morning and I dont wanna get stuck in there and end up being late for work.
A sharp dressed man need a watch, And that's all! Its necessary to say more? Yes! ,It is! A watch is a timeless piece of beauty that also gives you the hour, a mechanic wonder, a conection whit the history, a jewelry of good taste for men and women (unless it´s a Movado), it's one of the best things in life! and have 1000% more style that any cel phone in the earth!
Many light up in the dark. I'm not a collector but I do enjoy looking at the variety, the quality, the gadgetry, and the wrist "poetry". Many G Shocks appeal to me. I really like my Mudmaster.
I have a couple more reasons why a person should wear a watch: The fashion aesthetic. You have to wear the right watch to go with your outfit and accessories. For example, during the day I wear my white metal accessories - sterling silver chain ring and bracelet to go with my white metal watch. Watches like Seiko especially with the highly reflective stainless steel and high polished features on awesome look which gets compliments. In the evening, before going out, I wear my gold jewelry and accessories including my gold watch. I just have fun with it! The second reason why one should get a watch is the investment value. Lots of times I needed a quick amount of cash and I took my watch to the pawn shop and got a quick two or three hundred dollars. Wearing an investment that you can quickly liquidate comes through in a pinch!
Anyone who has or is working in an office with seriouse people knows the importance of a fine watch.. It may sound narcicistic but when i wear my Omegas or Breitling i can feel the amount of respect i get from others.. Btw Jory is one funny son of a gun, his unexpected humor kills me everytime..
I am really enjoying my DW, MVMT, Movado, Invicta, HB, Fossil,Diesel and MK collection!...................................just kidding! My Orient Mako 2 and I know how much you like those Jory! I agree we should all wear a watch, as there are times when it’s impolite or even dangerous to check a phone for the time, so just wear one and hopefully you won’t be late.
I have an invicta though :( it’s my daily. I seldom wear my tissot le locle, philipwatch spike and Hamilton eto because I paid a pretty penny on them. Oh and I wear a watch because it tells time and much easier than pulling my phone out. And I feel naked without one on.
I wear a watch because: 1: Taking out your phone will be considered rude at times. 2: It's alot more convenient. Just a quick glance at my wrist vs digging in my pockets. 3: phones die and can be very fragile.
Reason #6: it is my only piece of jewelry. Dressed up for a nice dinner and show, put on a nice dress watch. Reason #7: it is a piece of functioning art, mechanical, accurate keeper of time, made by hand, in a small, compact case.
The most cogent point I’ve heard was said by Aurel Bacs, the auctioneer of the Paul Newman Daytona. He was speaking on the subject of vintage watches, but it can easily be applied to all watches and the passion of horology. “I think it has to do with the way our society evolves. Everything becomes more and more perfect. I mean, look at my mobile phone here on the desk; it looks exactly like yours and yours and yours. I cannot tell you a story about it. And when it’s broken we throw it. Vintage watches bring us back to times that we miss. Times when things maybe weren’t perfect but done with love.”
My first "grownup" wrist watch was a Timex IQ compass field watch, I bought it after graduating University and I love it, still wear it sometimes. Don't mess up with Timex!
Another good video ... Thank you. I think you mentioned that you live in LA? Reason I’m asking is you have good screen presence / charisma, you’re very funny / good timing, & articulate. Have you ever considered submitting some of these videos to a talent agency? I think you would do well on tv .. commercials, etc .. you capture people’s attention with your style of delivery. Just a thought.
Hey T3, i actually had a question that occurred to me while i was watching one of your videos, is there such a thing as a sweeping quartz watch? And if so are they any good?
I am a new subscriber and want your opinion on Victorinox mechanicals. I’ve seen some on Amazon that I am liking but would value an opinion on them, and frankly haven’t seen a lot about them on RU-vid.
Good video Jory. I've worn a watch as long as I can remember. I do have some Invicta's 🤣 I once raced a guy who used his phone to tell time. Guess who won 😁
I agree with Time Teller watches are more reliable then cell phone who may lose power. It is faster to look at your watch then pulling your cell phone. Wearing a watch tell your business partner or boss that you value time. I will add a watch is a functional jewelry, a piece of craftsmanship, a piece of mechanical technology, a piece of history and status symbol.
Treavor Dunn Not bad at all I have two of them and they are my favorite timepieces within the small collection I have as of right now! Great watch in my opinion for the money
Love the channel. Not sure if I can keep watching with all the Invicta roasts. I have 3 Invictas, a bulova, a Seiko skx and a g shock. I love the Invicta as much as the Seiko mostly because it has Seiko movements as well. Idk what Invicta did wrong besides being marketed better than most other watches to the masses
The Time Teller I respect that opinion. I personally dislike Rolex lol when I see a Rolex I just see a plain Jane uninteresting watch. I’d much rather the omega seamaster
I wear watches since my teens, i have a little collection but the reality is that less people wear watches and rely on their smartphones and smartwatches.
6th reason would be follow-up on your 2nd point that in business time is important. also time is universal everything is surrounding time so for sure you want a specific item/accessory on your body at all times
So I have crap -7.25 vision. At night if I want to know what time it is, I couldn't read a nightstand clock, even if it's 2' away or, fumble around for my smart phone. So, I wear a black dial field watch 24 hours a day (I never take it off) w big luminous #'s. I need a watch so when I'm not wearing my glasses, I can easily glance at my wrist, albeit, bringing it really close to my eyeballs.
