Another word about fonts. In word processing software, eg Word, often you need a licence to use the fonts in print. In canva's small print regarding the licence you are not permitted to use any of their templates or designs for commercial purposes. It is well worth researching licences before publishing anything as often kdp will allow the book to be published and then after it brings income then potential problems can arise. Also applies to using images, from sites like unsplash, in cover designs. I do not publish low content books I write my content and I did have a chat with a lawyer before publishing. I use Atticus formatting software and uploading to kdp is mostly a smooth process. An added bonus is that all fonts included with the software are OK for commercial use.

thank you so much for addressing the embedded font situation! I never had this before and now seem to get it each time I publish a book. I have triple checked commercial licenses and tried some of the "workarounds" in Adobe with no such luck. I'm so glad to hear it's not really a warning. (but I get it, you're not a lawyer!)
Paul, I love when you do videos on things that aren't easily apparent when there's lack of info, and great point bringing up the embedded fonts issue. I have an option for anyone who is really adamant on keeping the font and have less chance of error. I haven't had the embedded font issue yet on KDP, but if you are sure in your rights to commercial use of the font and its use to embed, you can try converting the text to outlines, (basically vector objects). This is the "create outlines" option in Photoshop and Illustrator, but I'm not sure where other software puts it, if it even has it. Since the text gets converted to a vector object, there won't be any font to embed. Just make sure you remove the text layers before export. I would not advise doing this with long-form text, like paragraph text, (there are ink bleed problems sometimes), but if the text is just stuff like low amounts of headers, decorative text, etc, it would be fine. To be honest though, I don't even think this is worth the effort, especially when adding extra labor like keeping backup files with the text layers and manually going through and creating outlines on tons of text. There are more than enough font fish in the sea. I only know this from having no choice but to use outlined text because it was part of a brand for a large company and they were adamant on keeping the font, and I was just a junior designer at the time. I thought it was a headache and wanted to change the font for years... I just wanted to get this out here though just as last ditch option. And I don't know how KDP will process it and approve it, all print shops are different. But at least maybe a couple people know about outlining text now!

Hey Paul, love your videos and get so much information, thank you!!! I have a huge problem. So I got an error message about my margins and bleed. So I resized it and moved everything around and launched the previewer and got NO ERROR messages, yay!! Well I went to check to see if it had been added to amazon and I got an email stating this. "add 0.125" to your width and 0.25" to your height to ensure that the images in your manuscript extend beyond the edge of the page, once you added the size, extend your images that you want to reach all the way to the edge of the page 0.125" beyond the trim line" I AM TOTALLY CONFUSED, I thought I took care of this. I NEED HELP!!
They are saying your pages need bleed. Either because you set the book to bleed instead of no bleed or you may have images or lines that go right to or near to the edge of the page. So instead of 6x9 your page would be 6.125 x 9.25.
Hi Paul, I keep getting this message “We found an issue on an earlier page of your title setup. Please go back, review your information and save in order to continue.” Everything looks right on all the pages.
Your videos have been amazingly helpful! Though none of these have been any of the issues I have encountered. I got emails stating it had to do with either using to many similar words in my title and subtitle, or stating using common titles such as journal .... yet also states that the name on my book has to exactly the same as the title I type in. Its been really frustrating
The error I've gotten is sort of like "empty spacing". Basically at the end of a few paragraphs at the bottom of pages or at the upper left corner of a chapter page. I've hit the space bar unnecessarily. I didn't think anything of it and tried to clear as many as I could because it was hard to know. But when I got the print version of my Romance novels some pages have a 🔲 in the locations I mention. Not a big deal but it's still annoying and tedious to fix.

The problem I have is the "upload failed" message. This means I can't even get to the preview stage. The frustrating part is that there's no message telling me why the error occurred, just "upload failed". It tends to happen on my manuscripts/interiors, never a problem with the covers. P.S. I always get the warning about fonts not being embedded. I tried going through all the options when I am exporting the file (from Affinity Publisher) and clicking the "embed fonts" option, but I still get the warning. However, as Paul said, it doesn't seem to be a problem. Everything looks fine in the preview and KDP accepts the files.

i went into every page of my journal and moved all the text inside the margins, saved it again, and re uploaded. for whatever reason, it's uploading outside of the margins

Color bars are strips with a series of patches used to ensure color balance during printing. Remove all template text and guides from your cover file. How can I fix this?
Running into an issue with KDP saying information is public domain when it's not. There asking for proof that author is sole author or agreement from other author permission was granted. How? When there is only one author.

Hi Paul I have been watching your videos and I just have a quick question, on the video that you have that shows how to create a book cover and interior on canva and then download to KDP, my question is when you select a cover example when you download the cover template from Vetezy, and you download. Then upload, and drop in- to create the cover in canva, whenever you delete the Vectezt cover template where do you delete it from? When I delete, it deletes the whole thing that I created ! so I just don't know where to delete the cover template at? Your service and channel is greatly appreciated!
I keep getting a cover error message saying resize cover image for bleed ::: all covers must be sized for bleed and to add .125” to cover file on top bottom and sides. Then once increased cover size extend images beyond trim line and to edge of page. It’s a 8.5 X 11 or 17.493 X 11.25 in Canva. So do I need to add.125 to cover dimensions like you did for the interior? Can I fix this problem by not uploading a cover with bleed settings?
No you don’t need to add in the extra size. Are you sure you’re images have gone right to the edge of the cover template? And also have the right cover template size for the number of pages in your book?

I had to make my 8.5 x 11 file I think 8.625 x 11.25 - they like ya to add .125 inches on height and I think .25 inches on width... I had to bump up the size in smaller increments and try to upload a few times before I found the proper size. Also, even though I picked full bleed PDF, I used it for a comic book, which has borders already, Amazon would not let me publish until the bordered pages were within their guidelines. It was fine with things that went to the edge of the page, but I had to extend them past the trim line, which meant making my files canvas size bigger than 8.5 x 11.

I'm suddenly dealing with rejections due to margins even though there is clearly nothing anywhere near the edge. I uploaded one interior and it was fine, then I did it in a second book about a week later and it was rejected. I'm using the border template you recommend and nothing is anywhere near the line! It's driving me batty and the tech help isn't really helping. I made sure to click no bleed as it's not a journal. Have you seen this happening all of a sudden? I'm so perplexed
No, haven’t seen his happening all of a sudden due to an error on KDP’s part. It will be something within the book or a setting. If you’ve set it to no bleed and it’s a margin error then I would check every single page on the book preview.
