I'm sorry, but this is quite misleading. No, it's not like a modern car. No, it's not easy. No, it's not anywhere near as safe as airline travel. And it is hugely expensive. Single pilot IFR flight is hard. Yes, modern instrumentation helps, but it is still fundamentally a challenging endeavor. Aircraft are hugely expensive. A DA62 is over $1.5M, far out of reach of most people. Even an entry level Cirrus SR20 is over $400k, which is more than the cost of a house in most US markets. Then there are the operating costs. That entry level SR20 will cost on the order of $20k per year even if you don't fly a single hour.

The cost (ownership) per mile for a nice plane like this one, is probably closer to $3500 per mi than 80 or 90 cents per mile in your SUV, so you best double check that airline ticket before tearing it up. (I'll never fly commercial again, but that's another story)

So true especially the actual annual costs when the cost of the plane and your hangar are factored in. In 19 yrs of owning my archer I have spent over 300k in flying. Wouldn’t change it though.

I have one of those vintage Cessna’s that John mentioned, a 1973 182. With the engine, avionics and interior upgrades I have done I can out perform at least half the specs of a DA62 and I can fly into small backcountry strips or an international airport. The DA62 is a fine airplane, no question but for about a third of the cash I wouldn’t trade my bird for anything. Every aircraft type has many pro’s and cons regardless of price.

Huge over-simplification, John. Sorry... Few buttons, and the plane flies itself... Sure, after you have done a thorough pre-flight, checked and understood the weather, filed an IFR flight plan, contacted clearance, and departure control, checked the NOTAMs, the Weight & Balance, the FBO on the receiving side etc. Its not a tesla... its a highly complicated, expensive machine.

I agree with you, but in order to sit in the pilot seat of this plane you'll need a multi engine rating/training/license etc.. so although all the steps you mentioned are in fact not as simple for your average guy, it's a SOP for a pilot rated to fly this aircraft.

Agree with the above. Plus, when a bug takes up residence in the pitot tube/system or when the panel goes dark it's power settings and stick and rudder skills that will bring you safely home. Not the autopilot. Relying on the electronics to the extent this video suggests is a pretty bad idea. And group ownership can work, but not always. And going lease back seems like a great way to have a used-up, tired (and maybe broken) airplane that you are responsible for fixing.

As a person who has been spending about 3 months digging into what it will take to get into a plane regularly…. The only way that is “economical” is flight clubs or plane shares…. And then you lose the “accessibility” This channel clearly geared toward creating new money folks to becoming pilots.

Disagree. What I did was look online and purchase a used aircraft. Many good examples can be had for what a new SUV would cost. You learn so much by being an owner. Costs for hangers or maintenance but also what maintenance items can be performed yourself to save money. One especially useful feature of Foreflight is where cheap fuel is located. Prices vary wildly and airports a few miles apart can have $2.00 a gallon or more differences in price. That makes a difference when you have 88 gallon tanks!

@@kellydaniels0044 come on man, you can lie to your wife about the plane budget, but not the internet hahahaha “new SUV” what about your PPL, insurance, Hangar, overhauls, currency… Maybe hangars out in the country ain’t as much, that’s something I haven’t checked but I also don’t want to travel to get to my plane… I want to travel in my plane :) All the maintenance that really matters requires A&P, and if you want that license…. You’re gonna have to pay for another course… I’m not trying to be a Debbie downer, it’s just not nearly as clean cut as he makes it in the video.

@@JT203L obviously everything cost money and while aircraft aren't cheap, neither is owning a boat or any hobby. My first aircraft, 2 years ago, I paid $40,000. It also cost me 10k to get my PPL. Still below the 70-80k a new Suburban or Tahoe costs (my 2014 Tundra used was 47k!). The plane was registered experimental so I could do all my own maintenance except for annuals (about 1200 a year). It burned 8 gallons per hour at 120kts so I could go 600 miles on $250 worrh of gas! Insurance was $1200 a year, again, about like a boat. I pay $425 a month for hanger rent( my biggest expense) but I can park on the ramp for $170 if I choose.Thats at KDWH, 18 miles from downtown Houston, (definitely not in the country). I put over 850 hours on that aircraft after I got my license flying all around the country and into over 300 airports in the 2 years I owned it. I now have 1347 hours and still only have a PPL. Last September I sold that aircraft and bought a 182RG. I paid about $300 to get my complex and retractable add ons. I can only dream about owning a DA-42 or DA-50, but I know that someday there will be used ones within my reach, just as my 182 was out of my reach when it was new. If they ever get the engine situation sorted out where its again TBO and not TBR I will have one. This is an shortned version of my journey. If you ever want to buy me lunch I could tell you the entire story. Planes or boats arent cheap. I ride motorcycles too. Ever priced an Elecra Glide, Gold Wing or BMW GSA lately?

Airmanship is lost in your thinking, if the electronics are lost, these kinds of "pilots" you are trying to attract, are not and cannot be "aviators".

Dan, I would disagree with your assessment. Would you say that airline pilots are not aviators and lack airmanship? The automation and technology in an airline jet is exceptional and requires skilled pilots even though, for the most part, they do not fly the plane until stabilized in the climb and do not take control until stabilized decent. As a matter of fact, the more cockpit tech the better the pilot needs to be, and the greater the pilot's aircraft systems knowledge need to be, to address issues and fly the plane by hand, if required. The pilot needs to have knowledge of aircraft systems, aerodynamics, navigation in all forms and not just tech provided, weather, and aeronautical decision making just to name a few to fly a plane: this equates to airmanship. Tech requires more, not less airmanship ability.

@@Mistamannfour some airline pilots that aviate outside of work are true aviators, others are pilots as a career only, highly skilled only within their occupational requirements. Some or many lack basic airmanship, without all that technology at hand.

All the haters need to realize flying is economical private in GA if you already fly regularly commercial. I personally save a ton of time owning a 2013 Cessna TTX. 200 MPH+ everywhere and in and out of airports in a couple minutes. No security! No TSA! Just walk to the plane, preflight and you are on your way.

I almost bought a TTX a few years ago, but someone got their deposit in the night before I was going to put mine down. I was so pissed! I flew 1400 miles to go see it and the broker couldn’t even give me the courtesy of letting me know there was another interested potential buyer. I did, at least get a demo flight though. It was amazing, fast and efficient! A bit tough to slow down though especially when descending to a traffic pattern. The spoilers helped a bit though. Overall it was easier to fly than I thought it would be!

I had a 1964 Mooney M20E for 6 years and it was an awesome plane for travel. My wife and I flew it all over the western US. Landing at an FBO and having a lineman drive up and park the rental car next to the plane was so convenient. The DA62 would be great, and I have over 4,000 hours of multi jet time from the military, but no way could I afford that aircraft. Good video!

Top secret is (drum roll): gotta be very wealthy or fly old cheaper planes but with expensive maintenance. Experimental is probably only good option and even that area is getting expensive. Hopefully hybrid power plants help… maybe.. maybe

A Cessna 152 is totally within a normal person’s budget. The overhaul costs are not awful if you bank away money as you fly. The 152 is kind of like the Miata of the sky. A pure experience of flying. Nothing fancy.

THE TRUTH....you will spend hundreds of hours going to training, buying a plane for a million plus, paying for it to sit in a hangar, annuals inspections, huge tax bills, huge fuel costs, hundreds more hours getting instrument rating, hours of training to stay current, you'll arrive at airports with no car, when your plane breaks it gets fixed by Bubba at the hobo Airport you were flying over when your plane broke, these piston aircraft really can't get above the weather. Cheaper to charter a jet instead of paying for a hotel for your plane every night you own it on top of every thing I listed. Lastly when your plane breaks you'll be flying commercial home then commercial returning back to your plane to fly it home

As a 45 + year pilot it's really not hard to figure that Cessna that you can now find for less than 10 K and now he is sporting new DA something for around a million , notice he also has a big hangar . Flying is not cheap in anything . There is no secret to that bubba .

A whole other world most cannot afford, and due to prices of planes this is not the time either. Sorry to be a negative poster but GA cost are out of reach for most people. I consider myself middle class and have some extra income but still cannot afford anything you would want for cross country let alone 1.2 to 1.5 million dollar Diamond 62. Dream plane for sure though!

Great sales pitch. If your goal is to get people into aviation, that is a great video. However, that is the most misleading information I have seen in a long time. I am a longtime 91 instructor, 121 instructor/checkairman, and realize the attitude you’re portraying here (I just push a button and it flies itself) is exactly the laxidasy perspective that has killed many, many a pilot and unsuspecting passengers. Even the way you say 200mph is misleading to the novice listening to this. Yes, maybe 200 statute miles per hour, but we all know that isn’t what we use. In knots what does that plane fly. If people simply listen to this video and then start learning and realize “hey… I need to understand weather, airspace, and actually learn aerodynamics… what? He said we just push a button.” But then, if you’re just trying to get people in the door, I understand. I’ve always tried to a little more honest and less “salesmanish”. Nice showcase for the plane though.

He's VERY misleading to represent that an airplane is like taking an Uber. Second if you factor in acquisition costs, fixed and variable operating costs, initial training, and recurrent training costs there is NO way you can justify flying to a destination 1,000 mi away that is also served by an airline, (not to mention that the IRS will only let you write off the equivalent cost as an operating expense. If you have to transport 4 people immediately, then it "might" make sense to charter a small plane. I'd love to have a DA-62 or a Piper M600...but I'd be under no illusion that they would pay for themselves - even if leased out for on-demand charter work.

@@Maniac742 This isn't a party. Flying is a long, challenging endeavor. Daniel's points are right on. I have been flying for over 46 years and have logged nearly 20,000 hours as a pilot. It takes MUCH more than pushing a button. However, if you're interested, there are ways to really enjoy this profession. Very few people will ever have the resources to own and fly their own personal aircraft.

Very inaccurate, there is no “private aviation”. There is general aviation , where you may be a sport pilot, private pilot, commercial pilot etc.

1 & 2, sure. 3, 4 & 5 : no way in hell, you're lying straight up. #3, personal planes can be a faster way to get from point A to point B within ~500nm due to the time savings of dealing with airport security, boarding, lines, etc. There's also the benefit of being able to fly (weather permitting) at any time rather than working around the airline schedule. But airliners cruise at 300-400+kts, while small planes fly in the 120-170kt range. There are some faster models but they're prohibitively expensive to insure. $30k+/year for an experienced pilot and insurance companies will just laugh at a low time (

It's not that people don't know about private aviation, it's because most cannot afford to shell out 150 bucks an hour for C172 just to go a little faster than driving. If you're not a multi-millionaire, good luck owning a DA62. That I know.

There is a lot of negativity on the comments and there are some valid points being made, however, what is needed are ideas on creating ways of bringing down the cost of buying and owning brand new innovative aircraft like this DA62. I obtained my pilot license in 1978 when age 17 but never felt it was safe enough back then in GA and way to expensive. It was truly flying back then described as hours of boredom mixed in with moments of sheer terror. Now it is much safer with all the new technology and less engine management in the DA. I would love to see ways to implement the creation and production of new aircraft’s to replace the older planes because I fear that they eventually will be made useless anyway due to green earth crazy communist liberals when they outlaw regular gas. Our government pisses away so much of our hard earn tax dollars on bs pork projects which should be redirected by the people to updating GA airports and bringing cost back down for the real people who work and pay those taxes. I not saying to increase any taxes, but rather reduce the taxes and redirect them from idiots like Pelosie and Schumer who gets rich off us and then engages in insider trading in top of it!!!

What a ridiculous video. (1) The plane they're flying costs more then $1M, (2) personal flying safety has not improved with the advent of the new electronics, and (3) becoming a competent and safe pilot requires a commitment that most people are not willing to undertake. It is NOT like driving a car.

I really dislike it when "pilots" push a few buttons and set the autopilot. That is not flying in the truest sense. That is providing a false sense of security and safety to the button pusher and anyone else on board. A true flyer flies the aircraft, knows it's complete limits, and keeps hands-on to learn every nuance of the aircraft they are in. There is a place and a time for autopilot without doubt. Sadly though, too many people rely on it and forget the small things, and how to perform them. This, in turn, leads to bad consequences when emergencies crop up during a flight.

6:26 Independent businessMAN... Uhum! This is 2022 and we ladies also are pilots are business owners, even though the business world (and pilots) are largely male dominated. That said, you may wish not to keep us in mind while addressing the advantages of becoming a private pilot. Also, we are a privileged people; that is, most cannot afford to become a pilot and own an aircraft. Let's never take what we have for granted and hopefully general aviation can become more accessible and affordable. Gone are the days when an intro ride cost $10 as it was when I first began to fly.

For real? This dude is flying a plane 99% of people could never afford with a full on camera crew talking about how easy GA is. Meanwhile most people in GA are flying 172s and Piper 140s and they are lucky if they have an auto pilot. It ain’t easy. This guy is basically sitting here saying “making a million dollars is easy” when his parents started off by giving him 999,999 dollars. This is a joke of a video.
