I really appreciate that Chris consistently performs the motion he's trying to explain again and again. So many RU-vid videos get lost in 15 minutes of talking in between brief physical demonstrations. Keep doing what you're doing
I’m a 74 year old and have been shooting in the high 80s because my pitching (and chipping) completely deserted me a few years ago. I have tried fixes promoted by a number of online pros. This past weekend I sat down once again looking for some help. I watched your video twice. It made sense to me so I decided to put your tips into practice on Monday during a tournament. Not the best place to start but it’s what I could do. During the round I mishit only one pitch. Not every shot was close but I was on the green. It was like a light switch had been turned on. I need to keep working with the video but I sure have a great starting point. THANK YOU
Learning how to effectively use the bounce was the "AHA" moment in my game. If we can get more people to understand that turf interaction is the one of the most important fundamentals in the shortgame, handicaps would be dropping everywhere!! Great video!
I’m so happy I found your channel I have watched so many golf channels and you are definitely the best my favorite thing is how you explain everything. Thank you for what u do
Thanks Chris. I watched this video a few times before I went to the range and worked on the shots. What a difference it made for me. Shot 7 shots better than I did the weekend before, mostly due to not duffing pitch and chip shots.
Seriously love your videos. I binge watch them and add to my “Golf” playlist on here. Already noticing drastic improvements to my game, Chris. Your doing the Lord’s work!
This part of the game has held me back for years - and I mean years. I have watched this video 3 times over the last week or so and then tried it on the course this weekend; 42 stableford points later and I take the money (I play off 9). Its almost as if my whole course management has changed as I now feel so much more comfortable and confident facing short range pitch shots.
Chris, this video is excellent. I've struggled with my short game for years, I actually mean 15 years! I stumbled accross this video and can say it has completely turned things around to the point where I have practiced a couple of times and feel cured of my shortgame problems. Can't wait for my next game!
Just wanna say many thanks for the pitching tips. Things finally clicked and I was hitting easy pitch shots today. Even told myself, "it can't be this simple" lol. Thanks again man.
Hi Chris. Enjoyed the video and will try your tips. Please let me know the loft on the wedge you used as ball seems to pop up quite quickly and has little run😊
Great tips Chris - very easy to understand. My pitching varies a lot, from very good to abominable! I think these simple tips will help me be more consistent from 50 yards in
I hit behind the ball even when I move the ball back. Often I get my arms more involved instead of relying on the turn of my body. I could use more practice with follow thoughs too. I love your videos. Thanks. Kent
Really useful tips, thank you. Personally been struggling with strike, usually on the heavy side, sometimes on the thin side, but usually with even shorter shots. I've been trying to use the up-down-and-in approach suggested by me and my golf tv.
id like to see a technical detailed lesson on how to get the leading edge under and thru the ball on tight fairway lies for pitch shots up to 80 yards. Thanks
Well Chris, I have a hard time with distance and strength needed to get to lets say a 6 foot circle around the flag. I'm not committed or afraid of hitting way to strong so as I'm coming down I hesitate and end up chunking it. I use a 60 degree wedge to chip and pitch. Great video! Your explanations are so easy to follow! I follow many others, you are the easiest to understand! thanks from Quebec, Canada!
Appreciate the helpful tips. However, I wonder if you can add some tips on chipping and pitching for those deep or thick grass shots near the green and some ways out. Thanks. John
Great explanation of pitfalls and remedies. Helps a lot! At the moment just relieved to get it on the green. So this is just my level. Would like to know the techniques for really getting it close though. If there are any keys?
Hi Chris. Great video as always. For me personally I got the biggest issue with contact, therefore distance is way off. I’m really interested in an in depth short pitch video, wich maybe talks about the swing plane during short pitches and chips. There is almost no content on RU-vid regarding this issue. It’d be great if you could give us some Tipps on that!
Honestly, it is the best part of my game. I have a "wedge system" for 30-90 yard shots (i.e. LW backswing to my thigh is 30 yds, to my waste is 35, etc.). For pitches shorter than that distance, I like the "Runyon method" (aka "the rule of 12"). There are times when I need a flop shot, for example, but 90%+ of all pitch shots for me are covered by those 2 methods and they work great.
@@ChrisRyanGolf I see so many guys I play with that simply take a lob wedge any time they are within 70 yards for pitching and chipping. Ironic that I had a shot today that was about a 6:1 ratio of fringe to pin and I chipped with a 6-iron (12-6=6 iron in "Runyon Rule of 12" method) and actually chipped it in (no kidding - it was about 100 feet)! My 2 buddies were in about the same spot as I was and both tried to hit a high and soft lob wedge and both made bogey. I try to tell them, but they just won't listen.
Great video thnx Chris my biggest issues are contact and distance yes I can hit 3 shots in a row at same distance but my first one getting right within a meter / yard is very hard for me it is easier for me hitting a full wedge at a given yardage
short short gameHi Chris, I find that I tend to rush my down swing and I am not too sure how strong should my left hand grip be/ Hope you can give me some tips to improve my short game. Thank you.
Controlling distance is a real challenge, particularly from 20-40 yards. When cutting off the finish, ball-striking suffers. Finishing with the arms left of the target leads me to think the shot will go too far. Is the best option simply to slow the rotation of the pivot? Thanks Chris!
So I have been putting a lot of time into this. I’ve been using my 60, S and Gap wedge. My issue is knowing which one to use and picking the landing spot.
Chris, this is the worst part of my game, index is 8.5. And clean contact is biggest issue, especially from fairway lies, my error is to hit thin, not heavy. I find this shot much easier from the rough. I will focus on these 5 tips. Thanks !!
The biggest issue I have is having the confidence to fly the ball all the way to the hole. My swing often much shorter than my practice swings and I come up short. It is a fear of thinning it through the green. Drives me mad
With, for example, a driver, I know that at impact there is already quite a bit of the extension you talk about. I am unclear whether the same is true on a pitch shot such as in this video, or whether the extension on a pitch shot doesn’t begin till after impact. Thanks to anyone who answers this for me.
Update 1 day later: I practiced today and, long story short, the extension seems necessarily to be coordinated with the clearing of the lower body, so that determined my timing. (I would have deleted my above question, but that function frequently doesn’t work on RU-vid)
I keep pitching to the inside or outside. All of a sudden, this is happening. Will try your tips and see if it isn't that I am not extending. Thank you for the video
Just back from a (mainly) golfing trip to Spain and found it really hard to get my shorter shots anywhere near the pin due to the very fluffy grass on fairways, I don't think they EVER scarify the grass, so there's a huge amount of thatch and it's very easy to have the club just go under the ball. Worst trait when playing in the UK is shanking these shorter shots - creeps in without warning and drives me mad!
After years of struggling, my pitching has improved hugely over the last 12 months, particulalry because I started to use the bounce. However, I now have the occassions where the dreaded shanks rear their ugl head with the short pitches and for the life of me I can't figure out what is causing them. Any ideas?
I shot a 47 last week, which for me anytime I can break 50 on 9 is fantastic. But it could have been much lower if I could pitch the ball, which brings me to this video.
I always struggle with how far to land the ball... sometimes ball check up if I hit too hard or runs off if not hit hard enough. I use a ratio of 1:1 for sand wedge as an example here. I try to maintain the same tempo
For a basic pitch I have the hands slightly ( and I do mean slightly ) ahead of the ball/sternum line. I find that with the hands further back it leads to pushed shots. This is for a good lie and a PW with mid bounce.
Hi Chris, my confidence lacks around the green. These tips I’ll apply for sure. I just don’t know which wedge to ever use. Any tips for picking the right wedge? I have a 58, 54, 50, and 46 as my wedge choices. Thanks!
Hey Nick, if you struggle with these shots I’d go for the 54 in most situations, long term you could vary this, but best to get some confidence back with one wedge first then look to work through the others
My ONE goal with the pitch is simply to put it on the green. This 40 yard shot to a 30-40 yard target (most greens are 30-40 yards deep) is unfortunately one of the most demanding shots in golf. By just getting the ball on the green consistently I have cut 6 strokes off my handicap.
