5 Small Improvements Olympus Quietly Made In E-M5 Mark III

For someone who just upgraded from the E-M10 MarkII to the E-M5 Mark III this video is gold. Thank you so much for sharing Robin. I just love the E-M5 I really feel a great imporvement in all aspects, and not only usability or funcionality but also image quality. The only thing I really regret from my E-M5 mII (and did not expect!) is the tilt screen!! The fully articulated flip screen could be considered as an upgrade, but I soon realised that the good old flip screen was much more discreet and fast to use, specially in street photography.

Thanks Robin for great content from a really experienced real world user. One improvement I cant wait to try is the em1-ii like 1-2switch+AEL button that I LOVE on my em1-ii & miss soooo much on my em5-ii. I set it for back button focus & to switch quickly from SF to CF. On the em5-ii the switch+button is just too small, too fidly to switch and too close to the EVF eyepad (& such a pleasure to use on the em1-ii). I'll get the em5-iii when available just for that! (well & for the phase detect AF, light weight, small size, 20mb sensor, stabilization, improved DOF...holly Christ, I sound like an Oly amdassador:-) All the best from Barcelona Spain sir.

I prefer the buttons as "Fn #" than a simbol of a function that doesn't is. Eg. a record button that activates the Manual Focusing.

Hi Robin, many thanks for the interesting observations in this video. I have been shooting Olympus M4/3 since 2012 and completely abandoned my Canon gear as a consequence. I have read many of your excellent reviews in the past but never joined your RU-vid channel until today. While it's disappointing that m4/3 sensor technology (in particular resolution) hasn't advanced in the last years while the APS-C competition made great strides, I recently bit the bullet and got myself the E-M5 iii. There's one detail in the E-M5 iii that almost drove me crazy until I discovered it wasn't a bug but actually an (undocumented) feature (which I had to figure out by myself; I didn't find the solution when googling for it). When reviewing pictures, after zooming in the OK button doesn't get you back to the zoomed out view. All OK does (also in the info button's "toggle view") is centering the green zoom box on faces. I was quite annoyed by this because this was different from my earlier Olympus cameras and I want to be able to leave zoom mode with the press of just one button. Well, I eventually discovered it is possible: instead of pressing the OK button, you just have to hold it. You can discover this if you find and go through the menu where you can set the delays for "button hold" operations, but I for one would normally not have bothered with this menu. This dual use of the OK button in review mode is actually a nice feature. I just wish Olympus would have advertised it somehow. I am sure I am not the only one who was irritated by this.

Plus your enthusiasm for photography at large is inspiring. For a future video, please consider doing a deeper dive into the high resolution shot mode for the em5 mk iii. This feature really intrigues me and as I consider the switch to m4/3, would like to better understand the large print capabilities here. Thanks.

Thanks for these E-M5 Mk III videos Robin. I'm considering either this or the older E-M1 Mk II with the firmware updates. The E-M1 is available online in the UK with the 14-42 EZ ED for just £955! Looking forward to getting my hands on the III when it goes on sale to compare side by side.

Nice video..I have a question...if using the lens from my older E520 with an electronic adapter...are the lens suppose to auto focus while in movie mode...I have a EM-5

SCP was the default on my E-M5 II, I'm surprised it wasn't on the E-M10 II which came out later IIRC... The EFC was always auto disabled after 1/320 even if it wasn't explicitly stated so they merely moved the option to turn it on. I do think that putting their Live/Composite modes directly on the dial seems particularly handy, always hated scrolling thru all shutter speeds to get there and it wasn't particularly intuitive the first time you go looking for said modes.

This gets more and more interesting! But that it took Olympus so long to get rid of much of the stupid things they held to so long, but better late than never! A good list, but I have to say that I actually like the "Live Control" system - that was already turned off on my Pen F (and now I know how to get it back!). This Anti-Shock thing I never understood that it was not set by default (or that it was a "global" setting instead of a special shooting mode, cluttering up the respective menu).

i bought the mk3 as an upgrade to my mk1 which died on me. Realised that Olympus took away the tethered shooting feature for mk3! they had it for mk 2. I feel this is one giant step back.

Robin, please, do you know the sensor readout time of EM5-3 ? Is it like EM1 = 1/60 sec ? Or slower ?

I have a question.. is AF micro adjustment necessary with this camera? I've always been unclear about whether mirrorless cameras that use phase detect need AF micro adjustment or not. Thanks.

What I still don't figure out on the E-M5 Mark III is the touch screen capability. Is it possible to navigate touch screen and change settings ?

The panorama setting should also be the same as that of the Mark IV. Stitching right into the camera. No more having to do afterwards in an editing program

IMPORTANT CORRECTION (Updated 16 November 2019): There is Anti-Shock setting in E-M5 Mark III but it is disabled by default and deeply hidden in the menu. To enable Anti-Shock for E-M5 Mark III, go to: Menu -- Gear Tab -- D1 -- Burst/Timer Icons Settings -- CHECK the Anti-Shock option. The error is in the video from 4.00 mark. The error has been corrected in the corresponding blog article. Thanks for pointing out, Michael Schuster.

There is something you missed, in movie mode you can have a shutter of 1/48 which is perfect for filming.

Is that true that Olympus camera business will be shut down?

Hi... when u say the Live View Boost OFF in M mode by default. But can it be turned ON if I wanted to? This is helpful when we use strobe underwater.

I wish they had implemented the battery status indicator from the EM1 II. With 3 bars only even the best camera reviewer ends up with a empty battery.

These are great updates, but it won't compensate for the loss of the metal body. That all plastic body and lower build quality on this new EM5 is very disappointing.

as far as the live SCP, I don't remember having to turn that on and I've never seen that bad version of the menu.. could they have changed the default setting in one of the firmware updates? maybe my memory is just failing me though!

BEWARE: There is a big mistake in the Video! The AntiShock Setting ist not automaticly turned on in the E_M5 III. They actually hid this Setting in the SuperControlPanel, to show this Setting in the SCP you have to go to menu D1 and enable it at the Shutter-Settings (between: "Picture Mode Settings" and "Multi Function Settings" Please let everyone know about this, because ist improves sharpness a lot at the certain shitter speeds! Thanks.
