Deathless is one of my favorite fantasy novels of all time, and I've always thought more people needed to read it. I'm glad you liked it!

Deathless just moved very high up on my reading list. My gran lived through the blockade of Leningrad, and the horrors she witnessed were unfathomable. She never talks about that time, still too painful, too vivid. But also, it was a show of resilience and dedication, and incredible bravery and honor. I mean, the stories that are told about that!...

I will definitely have to check out Deathless! It's one of those books that Goodreads recommends me in the sidebar, and I've seen it pop up there for years, but I've never gone for it. Your description makes it incredibly intriguing.

Maybe not a 5 star recommendation but if you’re interested in reading a very accessible non-fiction about language, and how it affects perception, I recommend checking out Through the Language Glass by Guy Deutscher

ok I have not read lexicon but you talking about liking the language discussions reminded me of how I felt about “the centre” talking about translations! Not a perfect book for me but it gave me a lot to think about after a string of more thoughtless romance and thrillers so I’m grateful to it for that haha 24 hour readathon coming up! I’m ready 🫡

I agree with you on the House Witch! It was something I really thought would work for me, but the humor didn’t land for me. And I agree that many things felt surface level for me. You’ve convinced me to pick up Deathless! It’s been on my radar but I never picked it up cause I hadn’t heard much about it.

'Deathless' sounds so good! It sounds like it's beautiful in a sad kind of way? You might like 'You let me in' by Camilla Bruce, it really plays with 'whats real? Is this a fantasy?', gets dark and strange but the ending and set up of the entire book was so thought provoking. As a wild card, you MIGHT also like 'The man who was thursday' (the audiobook is fantastic), it's speculative and at times quite surreal, but so funny and clever. It does go on tangents at time about politics and art but even those end up being funny. I'd definitely go with the audiobook though, i imagine some bits would be hard to get through with a physical copy (it's pretty short too!)

I wanted to like House Witch too. Sooo badly. I tried! But the writing felt very juvenile and the book was *way* too long. I couldn't finish it. 😞

omg I love your nails that you had at the beginning, and the end of the video they are so cute 💖 Even if you didn’t like The House of Witch you still have book with such a beautiful cover, I still was thinking about reading The House of Witch, but when You brought up the names of the characters Im not, so sure anymore 😂 When it comes to book recommendations I have sapphic book that I think you could like “Deillah Green doesn’t care” I had such a fun time reading it, it was funny cute, and all the side characters had so much personality, and I’m also a huge fun of “One last stop” and for me they were both amazing 💜

I understand the humor not working on The House Witch! It's not for everyone in that way. Lord Fuks is the worst with that. I feel like the series does get better than the first book, and Kraken gets better also. This video was fun, and I'm sorry my pick didn't work for you! 💕💕

So interesting to hear your thoughts on Lexicon! When I read it I mostly loved it until the end, which just fell flat for me for some reason and kinda ruined my experience. (Also the way women were portrayed played into my mixed feelings I think.) So true about the bathroom frequency though 😂 The language component was great though - can't wait to see what other "language" books you find!

I can’t seem to get through the house witch either… I love cozy fantasy and kitchen witchery, but it just has no focus. I adored cursed cocktails tho I didn’t find them similar at all 😂

Ooh definitely adding Lexicon to my tbr, I'd never heard of it but sounds interesting! I also love the idea of doing a five star audit, I might have to try that out for myself sometime. I can't remember if I've commented this before but since you listed fabric of reality/ uncanny as a fave trope I think you might like Many Worlds: Or, The Simulacra edited by Cadwell Turnbull & Josh Eure (who also both have stories in the book). It's a collection of short stories but they're all interconnected and in the same universe, and they all play with time and space in really weird and interesting ways. I rated it 4.5 when I read it last year but I still think about it pretty frequently so tbh, probably should've been a 5 star! The concept combined with the writing was just *chef's kiss*

I'm so sorry you didn't like The House Witch, I personally love it and the whole series has become a comfort series to me (its still ongoing, focusing on the next generation of characters). I assumed that the Lord Fuks humor would not be for everyone, to explain how I view is: my sister laughs at basically anything (point a finger at her and she is rolling on the floor laughing - yes, she is an adult). I am not necessarily amused by the name itself, I find the reaction of the people to his name funny. Does that make sense? I still recommend continue reading the series if you ever have time for it (don't listen to the audiobook).

What a unique trinity of books! I definitely wanna try Deathless now as we don't meet Koschei (Кощей) often in modern books; though, Baba Yaga (Баба Яга) is quite popular. A tiny, fun, deep, one of a kind book "All my friends are superheroes" by Andrew Kaufaman. I so wish more people read it ❤

I read Lexicon last year and was also pleasantly surprised. The 22 Murders of Madison May is a good one by the same author, but it's about parallel universes, not language.

I'm really curious what you would think of "Build Your House Around My Body" by Violet Kupersmith! It's Dark and Funny, an animal companion is present, (though it's a bit unhinged, be prepared), and is generally unhinged. But also talks about colonialism and violence against women. Idk, I loved it, but wish more people were talking about it!

I went back and watched your 5 Star Audit and 5 Star Predictions and I cannot recommend more highly a book called ‘Between Two Fires’ by Christopher Buehlman. If you love Dante’s Inferno and Paradise Lost, if you love Boschian hellscapes, if you enjoy historical fiction, this is everything!! I heard about it from Regan @PeruseProject and gave it to my bf for Christmas and it was his favorite book of the year. I just finished it last week and, at the risk of overselling it, think it could be right up your alley. 😊
