Five steps - Immediate steps you can take when you learn that somebody has died. Hi, I'm Darren Findling from The Probate Pro and I'm hopeful that these five steps will allow you to take immediate action decisions relating to a loved one who has died as your grieving mourning and dealing with all of the difficulties surrounding a death I'm hopeful that these five steps will guide you to make immediate decisions first step contact authorities if the individual has died in hospice or in a hospital setting the authorities will naturally be notified by the hospice or hospital staff but if the individual dies at home contact 9-1-1 they will send the police out to evaluate the situation and begin the process of bringing the coroner or medical examiner into the situation so first step contact authorities the second step is to provide a notice of death and this seems pretty logical after somebody has died you want to inform family and friends of the death there's many ways to do this picking up the phone text message social media is often used as a means of spreading the information very quickly and of course the traditional ways obituaries and notices of death within the newspapers are other ways of spreading the information so that everyone in the community may be aware that whether they're in a church group or clubs or affiliation groups to let them know of a passing of that individual you also want to contact the individuals employers they're still employed because they may have access to some really critical information like a prepaid burial and funeral plan or other related financial benefits relating to the death often few employers will also participate in some meaningful way in the funeral process sometimes contributing economically to the funeral bill providing some assistance there or some guidance through that process so contacting the employers of critical step in the notification third step starting in the funeral burial or cremation arrangements quickly now of course you want to follow the wishes of the individual so if they have identified through some estate planning documents will a trust or other planning documents how they want to be treated upon death whether its burial cremation or some specific plans you want to learn that information by going through their important documents looking at their safe deposit box or wherever they may have stored that critical or important information you may want to talk to loved ones family members to see if they've communicated is there a preference in the funeral home a burial plot that may have been purchased for the family and so on so begin that process by contacting a funeral home to assist and guide you through that process the funeral homes are really equipped to assist you with the cremation process burial process as well as the cemetery related issues they are very skilled at accomplishing all of that and including in that it really is really the four step one is to obtain death certificates death certificates can it be obtained through the funeral home or through the county you need the destiny reason these death certificates are so critical is they are a certification from the coroner or medical examiner they usually have a nice seal on it they look very official and when you're dealing with financial institutions and other organizations you're going to need to present that death certificate so they charge a fee usually for these and each one who buys an additional fee so we tend to tell people to buy enough that if they needed to send one to every financial institution to the employer and so on that they have plenty left over rather than running back and forth to obtain death certificates step number five and really the critical step of which I am so
