Thanks bro. Many memories. I’m over 70 and still use the truckers hitch Grandpa Taught me when I was a little kid and I still use it to Hold stuff down on a car, on boats, tying aircraft down and of course camping. When I set up at sunset and after I’ve set my stake, I then wrap one end about the stake and “heel it” By sliding it under the toe of my boot. Works great when camping on grass, This allows me to have both hands free to do any adjustments without losing the end in the weeds. It’s just an old habit and I find it useful. Oh, he also taught me to make a lasso And I can still hop without falling down. Anyway, y’all get out and enjoy life! 😁

Nice video Hazen, and I love your show. So the five knots are really four: the bowline, clove hitch, slippery hitch and trucker's hitch. Allow me offer a fifth one: the marline spike hitch. It works great for hanging your pack (or just about anything else) and keeping it dry up off of the ground on a tree, at a convenient height for loading/unloading it.

great video!! being a boy scout a knew most but the one that got me the most was the trucker knot! its my favorite way to tie stuff down and I even worked as a yard driver/loader for a heavy duty semi trailer company so I used it alot but the way you tied your first knot is different but way better! cool to learn a new way to something you already knew

Frank Rizzo Thanks again and I agree. Excellent habit to acquire! I Use it in the house, garage, boat and car. Also, use it on long cords I need to shorten. Wet/dry vacs, once done simply turn the Lid over Then Use the plastic bag for a quick store. And Electrical extension cords, too. On my 100’ I put one on each end. 👉🏽 That second one I learned out of necessity in construction, You Guys know what I’m talking about. Tripping over loose cords while 😇 carrying a load of shit just ain’t no fun. I put a magic nail in the wall and hang The damn thing up off the floor For a much cleaner work job. I prefer that to The daisy chain my brother uses. Just a note; I won’t use a cord over 100’ WITHOUT 👈🏾 A shut off switch, Preferably with a GFI. You can easily make one From parts from a Home Depot I always keep the cords Sisal, nylon or electrical as straight as possible! Helps keep equipment In good repair and It increases the life. It’s a key in safety‼️

Knots is one of the Boy Scouts first challenge. Another is to hike 10 miles, second hike 10 w/ a overnight and 10 back, third is a 30 mile hike w/ over night camp. All of this and more before turning 18 to qualify for Eagle Scout. The final challenge for Eagle Scout, they must camp out alone, prepare food, stay warm & not die all before they turn 18..

cordage storage is very helpful thanks brother, I always have a spider web no more spider paracord haha!
@waldoetherington2362
@waldoetherington2362 5 лет назад
That is a terrible way to store small cord. It introduces a LOT of twists into the cord. You want to store it in a hank not in a twisted coil like that. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-7hRWSdJVcfk.html

I don't think you understand the knot is wrong!!! the working end of the cord/rope should be inside the loop of the knot it does not matter which way you look at it, to be correct it has to be inside.
@johnweller9869
@johnweller9869 8 лет назад
Even the story line is wrong, the rabbit comes out of the hole and around the tree.( How can it go down the hole and then go around the tree) that is why the bowline shown is not a proper bowline it is being tied wrongly, the working end should be on the inside of the loop!!
@robnelsonfilms
@robnelsonfilms 8 лет назад
+John Weller - I know. That's because it's Hazen ... but it's right. You can come out of the hole and around the tree or down the hole and around a root or something... Doing the later just makes it "upside down." It still works as a bowline. It just doesn't look like how we're used to because you need to mentally flip it over.
@dkoriss1
@dkoriss1 8 лет назад
+John Weller ...well John please don't get me wrong, but you know it sounds a little funny trying to correct Hazen at least before you show the whole world like he did time after time, that you can easily set a durable shelter in any rainforest, or desert, one day and next one setting another one, rock solid in arctic -48 Celsius bellow zero, after you have fall into a frozen river, tying the knots with huge gloves on, IN NO TIME and making the shelter stands whole night with no problem while the arctic wind outside could easily lift up a ...CAR !!!!!!, same time taking care and driving to the herd a huge reindeer ! Next morning he had caught in his (wrong set?) trap an arctic white grouse !!!!! Sorry but first you have to prove at least some out of these in real life (we don't really expect you to catch sharks with the canoe you made by your self, or to climb up a huge tree with no equipment at all to get a hive, and then withstand thousands of wild African bees sting you, ...or, ...or) then make your achievements well known to the public worldwide and not just referring to the theory of the knots through the net and then it wouldn't sound so funny trying to correct Hazen, it's only my opinion only and I really say it in a friendly way, that's what's my impression after all.

your bowline is not correct
@robnelsonfilms

+John Weller - it's correct, just tied upside down (which doesn't matter).

It's called a 'heaving bowline' . Sailors make a slip knot in the standing line first, throw the working end around a post, thread working end thru the slip knot loop an pull----i love it
@dougnc7745
@dougnc7745 8 лет назад
Big stupid tent? really? you see no value above "stupid" in carrying a tent for backpacking? I like going with a tarp and groundsheet as good as the next but there is nothing wrong or stupid about carrying a tent. Nice job on the knots and simple explanation. Toss in a prusik knot and a figure 8 knot and you can practically build your own jungleland theme park.
@robnelsonfilms
@robnelsonfilms 8 лет назад
+doug “bearcountryhiker” nc - Did Hazen say a tent is "stupid" ? hehe. You know, having traveled with Hazen a lot, even when we have tents, he does prefer sleeping under the stars with a random tarp handy incase it rains. Love it.
