Sus4 triads are great for creating some beautiful super-imposed lines on maj7 chords, and the sus chords are often forgotten among the diatonic chords and triads. In this video I will go over 5 examples of sus4 triads and show you both how you can use play and practice them and also how an example of them over a Cmaj7 sounds.
I have also included the chord voicings that you can create using these sus4 triads as upper-structures.

Hope you like it! Do you use sus4 triads or do you have another favourite?

A cool lesson, I never would have paired sus and pentatonic and was surprised how similar they sound. Some more easily reached modern sounds. Thank You...!

This video just helped my write some great lines for part of a solo for a hard rock/metal song about Harleys! Hard evidence that this 'theory' stuff is universal across all genre's. I apply these superimposition ideas to the most zany places, much to the chagrin of my bandmates. 🤣 It mostly goes unnoticed... but *I* know, and that's what matters. Rock on! 🤘🤘

Great lesson Jens :) I think these concepts (as I hear it) are not only great for licks or improvised lines but also in composing heads or themes. Some of the sounds you've played are very familiar to what Aaron Copland composed in some of of his compositions, especially in "Appalachian Spring" (Do you know/like his work?). I think it's about this wide open sound, the sus chord gives you.
@JensLarsen
@JensLarsen 6 лет назад
+Łukasz Cebula Thank you! I guess anything you can use for a solo you can also use in a song? I don't know that Aaron Copland composition I will look it up ☺️
@Buleq147
@Buleq147 6 лет назад
I agree! And that what is great about it, because sometimes when you improvise you can play the great line and use it in composition/song. Check out Copland. He was very influenced by jazz and other vernacular musics of America.

Nice video Jens!Do you have any lessons on how to play over sus4 chords?It would be helpful.
@JensLarsen
@JensLarsen 5 лет назад
I don't, but mostly they are dominant chords and you can play them as Dorian from the 5th, so play Dm7 over G7sus4 🙂

in one of your most impressive solos on green dolphin street that you played on that panucci prototype back in 2016 there are some very interesting voicings interspersed with your single note lines. are these quartal voicings similar to the ones presented in this lesson? Could you do a lesson on this technique?
@JensLarsen

+twelve guitars. Thank you! To be honest I have no idea what I played there so I will try to check later ☺️

Know we get started to phrasing like Scott Henderson, Larry Carton or Steve Lukather and many more. If I or we can master this lessons, then Jazzy, Juicy (Smooth rock or 'Smooth Jazz / "Fusion" is the same thing') & Bluesy will be no problem to play. Jens I most admit that I though your lessons was more for jazz viewer(player) up their. I was wrong to have that though because your lessons are GLOBAL. Is not only about Jazz, but is about how to play all kind of Jazzy related style. Okay subjection: is difficult because I think your already cover most of the big present. Their is a lot jazz-lessons on youtube but none tell you the real secret behind - how to play decent jazz guitar "why triads, apreggio, pentatonic, major scale, Harm./mel. scale e.d...". Belief me every time you make me feel so small. I wish I know you 10 or 15 year ago. Big thumb up.

@JensLarsen

Thanks Mike! I don't think there is too big a difference when it comes to Jazz or Fusion in terms of how to play over chords and which arpeggios to use. Fusion is just with a lot more blues phrasing and pentatonics plus often a different guitar sound 🙂

hi jens! off topic question again sorry ... lol , q1) could you recommend some jazz blues books where i could learn solos and stuff q2)its great to transcribe like i transcribed few solos of yours and brunos blues video , but sometimes i dont know what is going on , is it ok to limit just to sound rather than gong in deep ?? q3) also i saw your blues arpeggios video i am practising that ,if u could help in jazz blues how to go about it it would help me
@JensLarsen
@JensLarsen 6 лет назад
+Kailash kumar Well, you really go for it! ☺️👍 Books: I never used that many books. I like the Joe Pass guitar style book, but maybe that is jazz jazz to you? Check out my video on top 5 Jazz books Did you transcribe a solo of mine? Thank you! You don't always have to figure out everything sometimes you can alsoet it be and come back later to see of you can analyze it. I don't understand your last question? Doesn't the video already explain it?

yes sir the video you did with bruno playing blues in F , i transcribed your first two solos , it was cool sound , maybe someday i will complete the whole thing , the last question was that how to go about jazz blues maybe some tips how to learn the style properly(step-wise method) some tips anything ...:-))

Kind of reminds me of McCoy Tyner
@JensLarsen

That makes a lot of sense since sus4 triads are closely related to pentatonic scales and McCoy uses a lot of pentatonic scales 🙂
