When Patrick was kidnapped by Irish slavers in the year 405 a.d., he thought he would never see his home or family again, and his resentment toward the Irish was deep and strong. Over time, however, he came to love the Irish, and vowed that if ever freed from slavery, he would return to preach the gospel to the people he had once so deeply resented. His vision was realized, and for forty years, Patrick labored among the Irish, establishing a foundation for Christian understanding that would last for centuries after his death. Donatiism was about excluding from the Church Christians (and especially church leaders) that had knuckled under to and collaborated with the Roman authorities during the Great Persecution under Diocletian to save their own hides. Donatists believed once you did that you were out forever. Many Christians asked for forgiveness and wanted to come back to the Church. The council concluded that the truly repentant should be forgiven and allowed back into fellowship. Patrick was the son of a Roman father and British Celtic mother. His father was in the civil service in what today is Wales. The Irish relate to him through Patrick’s Celtic blood through his mother but he was a Roman citizen. Most people don’t know this. Most think Patrick was Irish from Ireland.

You pointed out in this video one of the classic earmarks of a cult, that being that they always have a neatly packaged answer for doctrines that were traditionally mysterious or paradoxical. This is definitely something noteworthy that people should pay attention to.
@gigahorse1475
@gigahorse1475 Год назад
That reminds me of what an agnostic told me. This agnostic girl was talking to me and to a “Christian” cult member, separately. She told me, “The difference between you and her is that you will say “I don’t know,” but she always has an answer for everything.” She meant that in a positive way towards my position. She found it suspicious that one would always have an answer, and so she ended up accepting (non-heretical) Christianity.

@genesiskeglar6372 as does the word obfuscate. It seems that the early'church' realised that every time they settled on a definition someone would come along and ask how does that relate to scripture X,y or z or how does that play out logically and realising this was always going to be a problem they settled on just saying it's a mystery. In other words, shut up. I think that the truth should be easily and clearly understood. If not then there is something wrong.

I have been watching your videos for roughly 2 years now, and I find myself repeating several - and still, I'm as insignificant in knowledge compared to you as a monkey is versus a human - okay, not that bad, however I'm still amazed - and spoken so eloquently... so much that my young daughters request to have the videos replayed at night as they fall asleep.

When did the catholic church come into existence?
@GoreBruce
@GoreBruce 2 года назад
The word 'catholic' simply means general, and it was one of the words used to describe the Christian movement from its earliest days, as in 'one holy catholic and apostolic' church. The Roman Catholic Church, as we think of it now, grew and took shape gradually, but was not defined as distinctly as we think of it until the Middle Ages, and especially after the split with the East.

The Nestorian controversy confuses me. I don't get the problem. It seems to me that if JESUS has one nature that 100% man and 100% GOD, or if He has 2 natures, one 100% GOD and the other 100% man, the result is the same. Seems an odd thing to fight about.
@GoreBruce
@GoreBruce 4 года назад
Nestorianism taught that Christ was two natures and two persons. The church concluded that such a view threatened any idea of Christ as mediator between God and man, an office that would require a single person. Without a true mediator, our salvation is lost.

Pastor Gore, as you briefly touch on important aspects, doctrines, councils, etc. of Church History in this video I’m reminded of John Henry Newman who said, “To live is to change, and to be perfect is to have changed often. To be deep in history is to cease to be Protestant.” As I’ve studied the Church and Her history more and more over the years I’m finding it more and more difficult to disagree with JH Newman. He was a brilliant man who’s in depth studies led him to the conclusion that the Catholic expression of Christianity is the historic and valid expression. You too are a brilliant and deeply studious man who’s knowledge and study of Church History has not brought you to that conclusion. So, I don’t know if you’re able to, but if so, what are your thoughts on this? What do you say to Newman’s assertion? Any videos or recommendations of any kind on this topic? Blessings...
@GoreBruce
@GoreBruce 4 года назад
Yes, I'm familiar with Newman's famous quote. It reminds me of a joke told to me once by a convert from Catholicism. "What do you call a Catholic who has sat down and read the Bible from start to finish?" Answer: A protestant. For what it's worth, my closest Christian friend is a firm Catholic. We have many engaging and lively conversations. For me the heart of the matter comes down to the simple proposition that we are justified exclusively by grace, with no contribution of merit, congruous or otherwise, on our part. The Catholic Church expressly rejected that Biblical teaching at Trent, and remains firm on that point. That, as the old saying goes, is a hill I would be willing to die on.
@riverjao
@riverjao 4 года назад
Bruce Gore Thank you Pastor Gore! I think you’re right; that’s where we have to draw a line in the sand and decide what to go with: sola scriptura or much of Church History AND Tradition. Part of what I like about the Catholic and Orthodox traditions is the connection to the ancient Church, ie Creeds, Liturgy, emphasis on the Eucharist (I think one of the worst things to come out of the Reformation was what I consider and devaluing of The Lords Table), etc. And in connection with that I don’t like how as a Protestant my “church history” in some but not all ways goes back only 500 years. And even with that I have to qualify it because I emphatically reject Augustine/Luther/Calvin’s view of God’s sovereignty and free will and thus I’m no Calvinist at all (even though I respect the brilliance of those men). Nonetheless, thank you for your response!

Jesus is the Word become flesh. His being is eternal, yet he took human form. So he is fully God in flesh.. his flesh is from Adam , yet the person of God never allowed the flesh he was born in to rise up and move him to word or deed. His Spirit led his flesh..Jesus had full mastery of his flesh.. and this he gave to God as a sacrifice to bear upon his flesh the guilt and suffer the penalty of the Law beatings , flaying , strokes of a rod , as a lamb , he was silent , he didnt cry out for revenge , he didnt revile those who put him to death.. he showed us how to behave as a son of God. Then having paid for our transgressions he awaited in the grave being in hades yet death had no authority to keep his body , nor his soul.. as he had not sinned in his flesh nor with his Spirit, he by the fathers judgement arose from the dead vindicated , holy, righteous , just , the redeemer of all Gods saints , the redeemer of every sinner near to God and those far from God, thats humble themselves and recognise their works of righteousness cannot save them from damnation becore a Just God, cry out to God in his name , for mercy , have his blood applied to their confessesd sin , and that sin os removed from their record.. and so long as they then follow the Son Jesus of Nazareth , will upon death be translated to paradise until the resurrection on the last day.

As far as I am concern Jesus the Christ was a 100% man of divine origins, the Son of God, but not God. He is the "image" of the invisible God. We can call him God, however, because he represents God of earth. If we see him is like seeing God, but he is not God. They call the nature of Christ a mystery because makes absolutely no sense what they propose. 1 Cor 8:6 "Cults have a good answer to every question"

I'm a Calvinistic Baptist, but I don't think Augustine is that great a theologian. Too catholic and somewhat of a muddle head. He lived in difficult times I understand. And grappled with questions only the much later reformers really dealt effectively with. Only the very late Augustine has some merit as theologian.
