While the Israelites were settling into their territories of Canaan during the era of the judges, international conflicts were playing out around them, involving especially the great powers of Egypt to the south and the Hittites to the north. In spite of these surrounding threats, God protected his people and established them securely in the possessions that had been promised to Abraham. I am an atheist who has read the bible and studied other religions to a lesser degree in my attempt to better understand the beliefs of their adherents. Yours is a great lecture series and it is interesting to learn more about competing nations and empires and their relationship to a biblical timeline. Although skeptical, I find the history and stories of the bible compelling and they often shed light an who we are and how we got here. My sincere thanks to you.

I haven't listened to the earlier lectures and don't know what reasons Gore gives for placing the period of the Judges in the 1300s. Most mainstream scholars place the origin of Israel in the 1200s. A good overview of the problems found in all dating schemes can be found in Out of the Desert- December 1, 1999 by William H. Stiebing www.amazon.com/Out-Desert-William-H-Stiebing/dp/1573922358

Thanks for the feedback. You are quite correct about the issues related to the date of the Exodus. A robust minority take a different view, however, based on the biblical chronology itself, the history of the 18th Dynasty, and other external and internal evidence. Most of this is covered in the preceding lectures. Thanks again!

I remember when I was a kid, I would get on Sunday school bus and go to this church. My parents did not choose the church. The availability of a bus that passed through my neighborhood chose it. I was only like 8, but the Pastor would tell these gripping tales about Abraham, Isaac, Moses and so on. I could almost picture the world they lived in. It gave me my love for History. Since then I've grown up. I outgrew some of the more religious parts... but my love for history remained. And I remember all those old stories. It's great to see how they fit into the rest of the world around them. For some reason I had assumed that the exodus was related to the late bronze age collapse, but I guess it does make more sense that it was right before we start hearing about the Philistines who were likely part of the sea peoples.

You might find J.G. Macqueen, "The Hittites" (Thames and Hudson) an interesting read. He does not explore the biblical connections too much, but the history he documents certainly correlates reasonably well with the biblical narrative, and especially with the general distribution of Hittites around the near east after the fall of the Hittite Empire (c. 1100 b.c.). Thanks for your feedback!

Well done & thanks for posting. I'm having a hard time finding a parish that will discuss the Old Testament, much less study it. I'm surrounded by people preaching tolerance & forgiveness at the cost of their thoughts, dreams, & self esteem. It seems like they gloss over the old testament & even portions of the gospel to push their social agenda. I wish I could do more than give a thumbs up & comment

"In primitive society punishment is synonymous with revenge, & is impossible to distinguish 'civil' from 'criminal' offenses. The injured party will avenge himself as best he can upon the wrongdoer, or if he is dead, vengeance becomes the duty of his relatives, & there then arises a blood-feud. The matter may, however, be settled by payment of money if the parties can agree to this; such a payment is known as 'COMPOSITION'.... The blood-feud still survived in the Hittite Old Kingdom is clear from the following passage in the Edict of Telipinus: The rule of blood is a follows. Whoever commits a deed of blood, whatever the 'lord of blood (i.e., the Hebrew go'el) says-if he says 'Let him die', he shall die; but if he says 'Let him make restitution', he shall make restitution: the king shall have no say in it. The practice of giving 'persons' as part of the COMPOSITION for manslaughter is remarkable. The expression is that generally used for slaves. Perhaps such slaves were slain at the tomb of the deceased, as in some other ancient societies." [The Hittites, O.R. Gurney, 1966, Ch. Laws & Institutions, §. 3: Retribution & Restitution, p. 94-98] "In this respect Hittite law is comparatively advanced. retribution plays an inconspicuous part in comparison with the principle of restitution. The only capital offenses are rape, sexual intercourse with animals, and defiance of the authority of the state; also, if the offender is a slave, disobedience to his master and sorcery." [The Hittites, O.R. Gurney, 1966] "Question: Is it true that the Torah requires rape victims to marry their rapists, and the only punishment to the rapist is a fifty-shekel fine paid to the victim’s father? Response: Actually the reverse is true: The victim is not required to marry the rapist; the rapist is required to marry his victim (if she consents), after paying her a very heavy fine." www.chabad.org/parshah/article_cdo/aid/1940448/jewish/Does-the-Torah-Punish-a-Rape-Victim.htm "Both version make a careful distinction between killing in anger and killing accidentally; but it is curious that the only case which we should describe as willful murder is mentioned in connexion with a merchant, who seems to be treated rather in a class by himself, and is associated with the motive of robbery. The absence of a specific clause dealing with murder has been noticed also in both the code of Hammurabi and in the Assyrian laws. The crime is treated at length in the Israelite code, but we see from such passages as Deuteronomy xix. 12 that the Hebrew judicial authority ties had nothing to do with the murderer except to hand him over to the vengeance of the go-el, the 'redeemer', i.e. the next of kin." I can't tell you how much Power that this Lesson has brought to me, yes i am real close to be 53 years of steadfast belief in God and the Spirit of Jesus who dwells in me, with me and through me, i do admit the struggle of understanding the Trinity, it wasn't until i came up against the most Powerful Hittite at the age of 47 years old, this is when i experienced the Holy Spirit, and this was when it all came together and i escaped death looking me in the face, i have never ever doubted God and his Son Jesus the Christ, though i like Jacob, have questioned and screamed out for an answer during these Hittites i had experienced in my life, looking back at a time when all my friends would laugh and say that the Bible is nothing but a story Book made to believe so that we can be controlled by some secret Society, i refused and believed, now since those way smarter than i, like you have brought truth to the Bible. I can't be more Grateful today! Thank you and may our Lord God bless you in Jesus Name.

Elias Farendune Clobberer Are you all there mentally? There is no God as in the one in the bible obviously and even if you believe that then you believe he has no equals and certainly no Son and claiming Jesus is lord is the same as Baal, Baal means lord. Girls don’t have children without coming together in union with Man and then 9 to 10 months later the trinity is completed and this trinity creates life like God is said to do. Also there is absolutely no evidence of a real Jesus and a Hebrew in that area from that time period would never be named Jesus. Christos mean anointed, The Anointed One and is a state of being that one reaches when they became me a prophet so to speak. Bible is a corruption from the oldest version but there are ancient teachings hidden within for those who can see.

In serious prayer, I asked to understand the order of biblical history from the disorder of the old testament. I realize the books were designed to be read in comparison with one another for new meanings to become visible as we grow spiritually but geez I was making a misery out of my effort. It was my symbolic Hittite, but I kept searching, knowing my prayer would be answered. Now here I am typing a thank you to you. The funny thing was, I took a break last night and watched a documentary on the Hittites.
@bonnievable
@bonnievable 7 лет назад
There is nothing symbolic about the Hittites. They were people who lived in Canaan land when Israel got there, and they had to subdue them through war. 2Chronicles 8:7-8, "As for the people that were left of the Hittites, and the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites, which were not of Israel, But of their children, who were left after them in the land, whom the children of Israel consumed not, them did Solomon make to pay tribute until this day." The Bible is very clear if you don't listen to men's interpretation of it. Keep studying and let the Holy Spirit do the teaching!

The first known civilisation were the sumerians, interestingly Sumer was right in the the region where according to the Bible, the ark came to rest, and the place where God confused the languages is in that same region too. Everything you're saying fits very well in the Bible's narrative. Thank you so much for this lecture, it makes the Bible even more revealing and trusting

Samson is a very powerful men with little brain. Asked several times by Dalila: Where is located your power, he gave foul answers. In a minute, after the answer, the adversaries entered the room and aim at the precise location of his power. Obvious, his power was elsewhere, so he could easily defeat the enemies. 3 times in a row the same event took place and he did not understood what was happening. The fourth time he told the truth and he was imprisoned and blinded by enemies. What we can learn from this character. Probably it is better not to be so powerful but to have some brain and to learn from experience.

The missing components from the narrative are the giants. When thinking about the hittite and Egyptian border, you have to think about the giant civilization that may have existed in Israel as a buffer state and / or whom the giants were fighting for. We have their weapons and skeletons, the tombs of anak, etc.

O? I thought the etruscan is not indoeuropean and was one of two remained protoindoeuropean languages together with the bask language, before the etruscan disappeared. Maybe a language family that goes back to the anatolian farmers that moved into europe from 7000years ago. Maybe a later connection to the proto greek language on Lemnos - there is some findings there. Also the indoeuropean is most probably not from east anatolia but from a north kaukasian area that tamed horses, invented carts and formed then the yamnaya culture in the steppes north of the black and kaspian sea. Later moved from there to anatolia as well as to europe and both sides around the kaspian sea. Later proceeded to India as well.

Probably, courage is given by God, but in a way that I can not define, like a talent. But there is an other layer of courage that comes from the fear we betray the trust of the righteous and this type of courage has something warm in it. I am thinking of the prisoner for which life some human beings fight to liberate. God gave him the courage to survive but not the tenderness of human solidarity. I am really moved by these lectures.

Bruce Gore Please could you comment on the time of the exodus and the Bronze Age collapse?? Very interested in the collapse of the Babylonian Hittites and Samarian cultures and Samarian cultures and to what extent of ancient eejit survived as the only principle culture to get through this Bronze Age collapse time... Could it be argued that Israel came into existence as a result of the chaos left by the Bronze Age collapse ??
@GoreBruce
@GoreBruce 5 лет назад
Assuming the collapse of the Bronze came later than 1200 b.c., the common view, it is unlikely that the Exodus resulted from the event. Generally the latest date that scholars tie to the Exodus would be sometime earlier in the 1200s, and many (including myself) would put the date in the mid 1400s b.c.
@chantlive24
@chantlive24 5 лет назад
@Bruce Gore thank you for this. The Philistines invasion climate-induced drought and volcanic activity may well have all come at the same time creating a civilization collapse. I have heard that only limited ancient Egyptians survived and that the Hittites Sumerians Babylonians were pretty much wiped out. Presumably, pre-bronze age collapse there was significant societal interaction for several thousand years preceding . from what you're saying the exodus would have taken 200 to 400 years prior to the collapse. Judaism would have been young at this point. What evidence is there of early Judaism interacting with the well established religious practices at this time? I know there are great similarities with Gilgamesh and the biblical flood... Many influences must've crossed over at this time? I'm also interested in what affects the Bronze Age collapse would have had on the establishment of Israel? .... My last question is at that time of the exodus from your lecture, which I'm enjoying intensely, it would seem that Egypt's rule the land up to the Hittites now Lebanon. How is it that the Israelites could've invaded a piece of land administered by Egypt? dan
@GoreBruce
@GoreBruce 5 лет назад
If the Exodus took place c. 1447, then the conquest of Canaan would have started around 1400 b.c. During the pertinent time, the ruler of Egypt was Akhenaten, who took little interest in protecting the Levant, in spite of entreaties from the rulers of Phoenicia who complained of attacks from the south by the 'Apiru' (likely, Hebrews). The 'dark age' that followed the collapse of the Bronze Age corresponds with the period of the Israelite monarchy under Saul, David, and Solomon (c. 1100 - 900). The modest similarities between the Gilgamesh Epic and the biblical account of the flood suggest, in my opinion, independent memories of the same event.

Mr. Gore - why was battle of Kadesh not mentioned in the Bible? Because it didn't involve Israel?
@GoreBruce
@GoreBruce 5 лет назад
Good question! There are many events of ancient history that are not specifically mentioned in the Bible (e.g., the Trojan War, the Dorian Invasion, the fall of the Hittite Empire, etc.). The Battle of Kadesh falls in that category. The Bible does not purport to provide a comprehensive survey of ancient history, but rather tells the story of redemptive history, which involves God's call of a man, a family, and a nation for purposes of preparing the way for Messiah. The purpose of this series of lectures is simply to fill in the blanks a bit, by outlining the broader events of history, especially as they may intersect with biblical history.

I always thought that the Hittites that the Israelites were dealing with were of Hametic origin from the lineage of Canaan and his alleged son Heth. The Hittites of Anitolia were actually a conglomeration of Japhethetic stock. Mostly out of the lineage of Kitt(I'm). The bible says that Abraham bought land from the sons of Heth to bury his wife way back before the Hyksos period. I think it is a mistake to refer to the Anatolian group as Hittites. They were (K)hattains. The Hattians formed most likely from bands of Ashkenaz, Gomer, Kitt, and other groups of Japhethetic or Indo-European stock that unified into one country around 1800. That may be why they had so many gods.

Here's the section (below) from Joshua that Gore quotes for his bible study. It is not a coincidence that in the 'legal' world, repeating something three times carries weight, for instance: "you're trespassing, get off my property", or to a police constable "show me your warrant card" otherwise they're just 'impersonating an officer'. Most telling though is the need to Follow all of the Laws in v7 (the moral laws that is - the 10 Commandments, not the ceremonial laws that foreshadowed and were replaced by Jesus's covenant). And what is the 2nd...? Idolatry, which the Vatican Antichrist contravenes every single day (and think about what the crucifix actually is - since Jesus is alive not dead), and the 4th Commandment, which the Vatican Antichrist moved in Constantine's time over from His Chosen People's Sabbath, to the 'Day of Ra' - the Sun God (Satan)' day - Sunday... Worth pondering, as ALL CHRISTIANS follow Sunday Worship, except one small (but worldwide) group of Apostolic Christians that adhere strictly to His Word: "...Be strong and of a good courage: for unto this people shalt thou divide for an inheritance the land, which I sware unto their fathers to give them. Only be thou strong and very courageous, that thou mayest observe to do according to all the law, which Moses my servant commanded thee: turn not from it to the right hand or to the left, that thou mayest prosper whithersoever thou goest. This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success. Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest..." Joshua 1:6‭-‬9 KJV bible.com/bible/1/jos.1.6-9.KJV I speak as an ex RC incidentally... who saw the light... Jesus is quite clear on the subject of changing His Law... "...Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.." The meaning of this is that the Hatti empire continued on as a HATTI empire but modern scholars changed the name HATTI to HITTITE and labelled the whole thing as an “Indo-European Empire” to suit their purposes (i.e., painting the ancient Turanian world as an Aryan and Jewish world). Such modern labelling, some 4000 years after the event, changes the history of ancient Anatolia artificially into an “Aryan” or “Indo-European” dominated land rather than a land that was populated by the native Turanian Tur/Turk/Oguz peoples. Since what they did has not been questioned all this time, what they throw in - stayed in - thus giving the impression that what they say was true some 4000 years ago. Continuous propaganda of their concocted falsehood - conditions the unquestioning public into concluding that there was an “Indo-European” Empire in the heart of Turanian Anatolia. The truth is that there was no “Indo-European” languages until the wanderer Aryan priests artificially fabricated them from the much older Turkish language. One example of this is the wanderer Semite priests fabricating “Accadian and Assyrian” languages from the much older Turko-Sumerian language. Recently we have another example of such falsehood stating that “All Indo-European languages originated from Anatolia”. The intensive media propaganda presentation of this so-called “linguistic research of the Indo-European languages” by means of some computer manipulations is well implanted in the minds of the public - as if what was said was the truth. Actually, they would have been speaking the truth if they had labelled their paper as “All Indo-European languages originated from the ancient Turanian language of Turkish”. Finally, I point the reader to Isaiah 65:17 where the sovereign lord Jehova (YHWA) has said: ‘FOR HERE I AM CREATING NEW HEAVENS AND A NEW EARTH; AND THE FORMER THINGS WILL NOT BE CALLED TO MIND, NEITHER WILL THEY COME UP INTO THE HEART.’ Translated into simple terms, this means “I AM ERASING FROM HISTORY THE ANCIENT TURANIAN WORLD AND INSTALLING IN ITS PLACE A SEMITIC WORLD”. But the later Aryans also took the same concept and ran with it - with the so-called Christianity! Polat Kaya 2013-07-05 Many westerns are liars, good fairytale creators. They are. They're so-called aliens.

You must distinguish between black Hittites the partners of Abraham 1900bc. and the Arian Hittites, 1300BC. relatives of the Assyrians: The black Hittits are called Proto- Hittites.

@@siegfriedlechler7412 there is no such thing as proto hittites , cannanites were a mix of natufians with Iranian sheep herders from Caucasus= CANNANITES , SO MANY TRIBES , HITTITES AMORITES PILISTINES , YOU NAME IT

You are making a mistake in your thinking, because there were two different peoples with the name Hititi: ---1: You mean the sons of Heth the Cananite in Genesis 10. They lived around the year 2000 BC. in Canaan and were never in Persia ---2: I'm talking about the Hititis of Anatolia, they lived from 1700 BC. to 1200 in Anatolia. These were the descendants of the Kethura, a large people who spoke a Germanic language and founded Troya and later around 800BC. fled to Germany from the Assyrians

Good stuff...I would not have used a map showing Alexander's conquest of the Persian Empire which occurs a thousand - 750 years later but I guess you're okay. Good info here.

Parvaneh Kurd Parvaneh, the period of time that Mr. Gore is discussing in this video predates the Kurds by some 2,000 years and in fact predates the rise of the Persians Empire by nearly 600 years.
