In addition if IBX would be great even if it were privately operated. If you look at Florida & what they just recently did with the Brightline. Can you imagine if NYC did similar?

Came back to update on my message and I am assuming RU-vid deleted my prior message to my prior message. So when I have time I will rewrite my prior prior message. But I finally got to ride the Q4. And yes it is free up until March 30. They added more buses to the line to offset the increase in ridership. Unlike the first week it started this time there was a sign where the boxes with notices are stating the bus was free. The outside of the buses the signage say Q4 is a free bus and the date range of Sept. 24, 2023 to March 30, 2024. And it is lighted up with a special green color. This time the fare box is sealed off so there are no accidental payment with signs saying Q4 is "Fare Free until 03/30/24". Even the OMNY won't let you pay and is lit up in green letters as well stating Q4 is "Fare Free until 03/30/24". With the increase in ridership and the additional buses added to the line, several things happened this was the quickest times to get on off the bus which sped up travel time, example a 10 minute trip is now 5 minutes, 8 minutes the most this time was 8 because of the weather (there was heavy rain slowing traffic). But the quicker travel time is also because of the additional buses which reduced traffic along the line because there were no buses slowing traffic. So traffic has improved a long the line. But the buses is way less crowded, extremely quick to get on and off of, and really quick to get to the destination. There are $1 vans along this line and they are hurting because no one rides them anymore because the bus is free as opposed to paying $2 for a van. Everyone is willing to wait for the bus now.

Excellent video Thea. In the field of economics there is a concept called externalities: the external costs and benefits that can't be easily measured in the actual dollars and cents of a transit system's income and expenses. Your mention of economic prosperity to an area as a result of mass transit is a perfect example of an externality. Other external benefits include 1. less air pollution 2. less traffic casualties & fatalities 3. less traffic congestion 4. less wear and tear on area roads.

@@UrbanCaffeineI think it’s worthwhile. As I was saying in another post.. remember the subways were bought by the city pre-WW2 because they weren’t profitable to be run privately. Yes, it was the depression but as much as I hate to spin it in this context… 25% unemployment is 75% employment.
@stevenlitvintchouk3131

@@JimAllen-Persona No. it was because the City actively drove the IRT and BMT out of business. Mayor Walker hated the entire concept of private companies running the subways, and he and his allies went after them. The City built the IND subway lines right next to the IRT and BMT lines to draw ridership away. The City forbade the BMT and IRT from raising fares to make the lines solvent. And finally, the City forbade the BMT and IRT from building new subway lines far from the IND..

I use citi bike very frequently because its convenient, affordable (I have a yearly membership) and easily accessible around most of the city (still needs more outer borough coverage in BX, Q and BK). But as others have noted, its not truly safe considering how un-biker friendly NYC still is. Yes there are many bike lanes in the city, but they are still truly not safe enough and there have been too many times i've been caught in close calls with cars, or been worried a parked car will open its door. I would be disappointed if we lost citi bike, but I do feel like I take a huge risk every time I ride one.

I used to bike in the Bronx up until my late teens despite robbers knocking me off bike and stealing it when I was a pre-teen. Later on I got myself a hybrid trek bike and really enjoyed using it, but I stopped a few years before covid because it was big and inconvenient inside elevators. I think the Citi Bike program is cool, but now I just don't ride at all and it is not because of robbers or laziness. I'm just plain scared of cars. A friend of mine had his leg broken in a hit and run and I don't even have health insurance. Cars and accidents scare the hell out of me... especially in a country without universal healthcare. Too bad because I regularly look at folding bikes. I can tell I want to be out there, but I can't afford to deal with the consequences of an accident.

0:55 Assuming that the MTA selects a High Floor LRV, meaning the wheels (Bogies) are not intruding into the passenger compartment, the decision to use Light Rail is not inherently a bad one. Since the train will be operating in a grade separated Right of Way, platforms can be build for level boarding rather then worrying about having to step up from the street. And on that subject, rather than street running, if the existing ROW through the cemetery can't be used, why can they not construct a new cut-and-cover tunnel under the street? Then maybe the whole system could be automated & driverless

I'm really hoping that there are major fixes to MTA. I am still mad about the light rail option (I used to live in a city with light rail and it's inferior to subway) and with this last flood, it just exposes the major infrastructure failures. This on top of the fact that there is still talk about extending Manhattan south of Battery Park, smh. Priorities are not in order. I love this kind of content, if you decide to continue this type of video, I don't always catch what is happening with transit in the city so a synopsis is wonderful. Thank you!

6:37 This is the fundamental problem with transit. People underestimate how much things like cleaning up/rehabilitating stations and improving day-to-day operations would help. All money goes towards flashy projects which barely help people, but we need a balance of new transit and improved transit. The only true way to fix the subway is to properly modernize it (make stations nicer, full automation, PEDs, and subway cars DONE RIGHT,) but there's no political will to do that.

I have a similar series named the Pensyfan Periodical that covers railway news around the world for the past three years. In regards to this video, I'm glad the IBX is using a light rail alignment on top of the freight line, since that still preserves the freight ROW and gives it enough room for a second track, if a tunnel were to be built between Bay Head and New Jersey and increase freight service on the line. Keep up the great work. Just subscribed!

In terms of the bikes, sad the low I.Q. thugs that threw the bikes on the subway train tracks. One train threw sparks and damaged the third rail. And in terms of the Subway, the trains we currently have should run well for the next 30 years. They should use the funds in fixing the tunnel infrastructure instead of more unnecessary brand new trains.

I think about those neighborhoods far from the subways that only get local buses. Two local buses that I know that go through neighborhoods with no trains are the Q29 and Q18. I look at them and imagined being a commuter on those buses to get to far places like Glendale and Maspeth. I used to use the Q29 to get inside Elmhurst, because my apartment was close to the border of Corona - at least a mile from the M and R at Grand Avenue Station. I would take the bus from 82nd Street in Jackson Heights, that way my stop would be in front of my apartment. The Q58 is also an option if I get off at Grand Avenue, and I would get off at Corona Avenue, then walk 3 - 4 minutes to get home. The problem with the Q29, is that if I miss it at off-peak hours, I have to wait 20 - 30 minutes. So what I do is not risk going to 82nd Street, and just go straight to Grand Avenue - hopefully catch the Q58 or walk less than a mile up hill to my apartment. But what if I lived in Glendale? Commuters that have to travel that far and wait long have a lot of patience. I don’t take the Q18, but I see plenty of people waiting for that bus near the Rite Aid in Woodside. I see people running from the 7 Train to catch the Q18. And I can relate to that from my Q29 days. I would cross my fingers hoping that the people I see trying to catch a bus make it in time.

Thea, I admire your dedication to not only public transportation, but road use and community planning. But instead of just being another RU-vid vlogger, I would encourage you to seek a graduate degree in urban planning. In that way, you would have a much deeper knowledge of the issues, and would be able to give more definitive opinions. Of course, you could also start a career in urban/transportation planning, which the city needs more of.

The MTA can redeem themselves if they upgrade it to light metro like Vancouver's Skytrain - it's driverless automatic operation and rail vehicles the size of PCC streetcars, and MBTA Blue Line and Chicago El subway cars, makes it the ideal light rail for the IBX.

This is an excellent video to discuss about. Although I may have a few concerns about the MTA and how they can speed up more service during the Rush Hours every week and also the subways. 1. I wanna point out that busy bus routes around the boroughs should be SBS. For example, Flatbush Ave should recommend the B41SBS, Bay Parkway B6 SBS and the Crosstown buses such as the M42,M31,M57 and M116 should be SBS. 2. Citi Bikes should be extended to Bay Ridge and Bensonhurst but however, I have concerns about taking up parking spaces on certain streets. 3. Uber/Lyft should give discounts to passengers with disabilities if they have to travel to doctors appointments or wherever they travel, although some don’t use mobile cell phones. 3. Some MTA buses as well should not require large equipment and the need of use to take up most of the space for seating is a concern for strollers. As of the fare free bus programs, I think they could do more with the routes maybe like some in Midtown, Brooklyn and Queens. 4. As of the ride share goes with bikes, my main issue is how do people bring the bikes onto subways. To me it’s like taking up seating especially when it’s Rush Hour. Lastly some the Subways should have better service than waiting 10-15 minutes during the midday hours and also ways to speed up service. There are many concerns I have about the MTA and should write a letter to the MTA President for speeding up more projects

Honestly, I like the idea of a transfer to a citybike. The problem comes in groups. Plus, I can’t see the MTA maintaining a fleet of bicycles. It’s a worthwhile theory worth exploring. I want to go back to that interboro line video. I can’t envision street level light rail between Queens and Brooklyn but it depends on the routing. I’d also want to see the usage numbers of the Jackie Robinson. Oh yeah, transit should not be expected to be fiscally profitable. It’s a municipal utility. I think those looking to make it profitable should look back to the subways themselves that had to be bought out by the city.

I don’t understand why train companies are struggling to make profit in such metropolitan area, like New York. I’m originally from Japan, and the most train companies in Japan’s metropolitan area, such as Tokyo, Osaka, are making huge profits, and many of them are private companies or some are ran by public organizations but they are self funded by its profit (no tax payers money used for its operations), and also making significant improvements on train routes and stations day by day, and they are always super clean and run “on time”. I just don’t see same level of evolvement/quality at New York, why?
@dynasty0019
@dynasty0019 9 месяцев назад
The subway used to be private companies, but because they never made money, the MTA took over. The thing is a lot of Japanese rail companies are actually real estate companies, the majority of their revenue is from development and retail leases around their stations. When the MTA took over from the original IRT, BMT, and IND companies, it didn't had the vision or it was too expensive to acquire more land to develop around subway properties, so the MTA relies heavily on fares, toll fees, and state funding.
@noodle-noodles
@noodle-noodles 9 месяцев назад
@@dynasty0019 I think that had been true until Japanese real estate “bubble” economy bursted in mid 90’s. As you can see, for example, JR East, one of major train operations, their PL statement from recent years (excluding COVID years), their the most income source is transportation business, not real estate (including station, hotel and etc) business unit.

Personally, the reason why I don’t use citi bike, nor why I ride a bike at all, is because despite improvements to bike infrastructure, it still feels super unsafe to me to ride a bike. There are still plenty of gaps in bike infrastructure (as well as lackluster infrastructure such as “painted gutters”), and I just don’t trust myself nor the drivers around me to act safely enough for me to ride a bike. Plus, I’m still not fully convinced by the argument certain urbanists have that helmets aren’t necessary. I’d rather not have my head hit hard pavement if I fall, especially at speeds that are faster than running, and since I don’t have my own helmet, nor does citi bike lend out helmets (bc that would be tough to do bc ew gross), and even if I did have my own helmet, I’d be unlikely to just carry it with me all the time, that’s why I don’t ride a bike around the city, and why even making citi bike part of nyc’s public transit wouldn’t necessarily convince me to start riding. If bike infrastructure was super well-connected and safe, then I might actually try it.

Yeah, biking being transportation instead of leisure mostly works in cities with lower travel demand on bad weather days (like beach cities).

If the infrastructure is there for it, biking can be used in horrible weather and the amount of trips will decline at the same rate as car trips.

@@stevenroshni1228it can work in other cities too, look at how it’s booming in European cities.

that just proves open streets are good for businesses on the open street but bad for ones that have diverted traffic. So open streets aren't that good

That's not how that works. The businesses on Washington ave need to advocate for better pedestrian access and bike lines along their street. It is unpleasant for potential customers because of loud and smelly cars heading to and from Atlantic ave. So, remove or partially remove car access and their businesses will benefit.

ebikes (and cargo ebikes, etc) do not belong to parks/ bike lanes/ open streets and must be registered and insured, not incentivized - they are not 'public transportation' but just an additional hazard for pedestrians and regular bikers 2300 collisions since jan 2020 with 22 deaths

I’m a driver and they can cohabitate. I’m also a Patron because I support her ideas. She’s not really fighting cars as much as advocating for alternatives. Cars aren’t going anywhere but there are plenty of places in the city where a car is not necessary nor is it the best option.

Neither are the cars' brake dust, hazmat dribblings, and choking fumes. 🤢🤒 Nor their accidents. 🤕😵💀
