With the new Amazon Electric Van coming out, you might think they created the best delivery vehicle but there are a few flaws I found in it. I'm going to talk about the things I don't like about the new Rivian Delivery Vehicle. As much as I love the experience, There are a couple things I wish it did better.

Just a little note. The reason why wireless is slower than wired is because it is inefficient. A portion of the electricity is lost during the charging process and becomes heat. Which is why your phone gets hot during wireless charging. Its the issue with the technology itself and i believe there is yet to be a solution
@RodknockRhett
@RodknockRhett 10 месяцев назад
Apple's Magsafe is pretty good I heard. Magnets keep the charged firmly attached decreasing resistance and reducing heat. Nothing will ever beat an actual wired connection though.
@Razor2048
@Razor2048 8 месяцев назад
@@RodknockRhett For inductive charging, the process is inefficient due to the amount of energy needed to maintain the magnetic field, It is also not smoothly variable in the output power, thus when a device is fully charged and the inductive charger is just covering the idle power use, it will generate more heat since the excess energy is basically wasted as heat in the inductive coil that is typically sandwiched between the back cover and the battery. With that in mind, lever let a device just sit on an inductive charger while fully charged, you are basically just cooking your battery at that point. While it is not a high amount of heat, it is still enough to degrade the battery more quickly over time. Most general inductive chargers have a 5 watt and 10 watt model, both being a slow charge, as at best you are getting the charge performance of old devices before quick charge technology came out. Most phones will charge at 18 watts over USB, and some will offer a more rapid charge of upwards of 40 watts, though those devices typically run into battery life issues within 1-1.5 years where you will find yourself recharging the battery multiple times per day. PS, the inductive pads in some vehicles can be toggled on or off, this is needed because you don't want to place a non-inductive charging phone on an inductive charger, since they are likely to lack any protection for the inductive field being directed at various components and PCB traces, or worse, if a device has no inductive charging, while having a large NFC coil. If it is a designated phone holder, then chances are that it may have some kind of setting to turn the inductive charger on or off. There are also inductive chargers that can output much more than 10 watts, but those typically use proprietary signaling since those outputs are not part of the qi standard, and they need active cooling.
@CitEnthusiast
@CitEnthusiast 8 месяцев назад
@@RodknockRhett The key to magsafe is it aligns the two coils perfectly every time. If coils are not aligned you may get charging to start, but inefficiently. Having them in exact alignment makes a huge difference, which is why magsafe was created. I have an induction charger that's a cheap aftermarket design for my SUV and it started intermittently not charging. I opened it up and found the wire coil was falling off, they used hot glue to fasten it. I replaced the glue with 3M adhesive tape and the problem was fixed, so how close the coils are to each other, and their alignment, are important. There is no resistance to increase or decrease, because it's proximity that causes the induction to work. The closer the two coils are, the stronger the field becomes.
@RodknockRhett
@RodknockRhett 8 месяцев назад
@@CitEnthusiast that increase in distance or being misaligned IS causing an increase in resistance. All resistance is, is how much can flow through a circuit at a time. Same thing will happen if your car's chassis grounds start to rust. The increase in resistance will destroy the ability for the electrical system to have enough current. That's when weird things happen. All wireless charging is, is a large, very large circuit through induction. If there's any extra distance, you'll have a higher resistance. Higher resistance = less flow. Another example: Speakers have their resistance to flow as well. Less resistance will cause the amplifier to flow more current actually making it put out more power. A circuit with zero resistance is a short... This will on an unprotected circuit cause damage. I highly doubt there is ZERO resistance with wireless charging. As the only way you'll have that, is a direct connection from positive to negative. I will also garrantee you that Apple has a good setup going on to regulate this due to the amount of variables going on here. Either way, my point still stands. Absolutely nothing beats a wired connection. Everything is stable for the most part (unless there's corrosion or the connection is loose) and that will deliver the most efficient charge. Magsafe sounds like a great idea and all. And it's certainly an improvement over not having anything holding the charger on... But it definitely isn't going to replace a wired connection for awhile.

Back in the Seventies in the UK we had vans that had 2 front sliding doors. I have a feeling that drivers were getting killed from stepping out without looking properly. Having an opening door means you HAVE to look. Passenger side opens to the kerb, so less likely to be hit by a passing car.

@TheCardGuyHW
@TheCardGuyHW 3 месяца назад
@@zachlevinson2402 Yes, youre able to 'jump' from one stop to another that better serves you or makes more sense. The tricky part is making sure that that next stop has the package in the tote youre working on. A lot of the times Amazon does thos stupid stops is because they dont want you "crossing" a busy street or the package is part of the next tote in line. Thats why i would take 5-10min before heading out to load to go over my entire route. If something doesnt make sense i would write down the number of the stop and the tote with the package just so i know where to look. It takes some getting used to, but after a couple of times youll get the hang of it. Hope this helps, good luck!

Nice! Having to deliver so many packages in a day is tough. You can deliver the packages on the door step however, here in The Netherlands that is not allowed. Delivery has to be in person, and if noone is home, you have to take the package back with you. That takes lots of time, and we also have to deliver 150-200 packages each day.... Having one-pedal drive is awesome though, that is so relaxing. It indeed takes some practice, but it is really good.
@DavidJonSpem
@DavidJonSpem 10 месяцев назад
Jow delivery straight up sucks sometimes here. Especially when you don't have control over the delivery date. It's such a mess and these days I only see stressed delivery guys at my door. (and yes I'm part of the problem by ordering online, you can't find everything locally) Sometimes neighbors aren't at home to take the package. Sometimes they hide the package around the backdoor. They take the package back and try it a different time or they bring it to a pickup point that is only open during work hours. It's gotten so bad recently that I got a letter in the mail saying that they missed me and I have to come pick it up. (I was literally there at home!)

No matter how small some of those things might sound/look, they all reduce productivity so improving the van would boost productivity = more packages delivered in the same time period = more cash for everyone, if you had to extrapolate how much time would you say is "wasted" or if you had natural lighting, driver sliding door, physical button for cargo area... how many more packages do you think you could handle in a shift? Ask fellow drivers and present your findings with an estimated productivity assessment to your boss, they might listen and could even bring a bonus your way!

I drive these vehicles everyday since i work for Rivian. I agree the fan in back is terrible and more lighting would be a cheap fix. The seat belt strap needs to be stronger but the seat belt can't be moved outward. Your not suppose to use the drivers door to deliver and a button on the rear door would make it real easy to steal from. There are to two cup holders on the left, two trays in the center and a large space behind the seat, put your cooler in the back!!!!!! The regenerative braking is weird at first but i never even use the brakes flying around the yard at 50mph in the R1S or R1T!!! Amazon asked for some of the things you don't like.

The driver door should still be a slide. I know many deliveries are curbside, but if you have to dock, having a sliding door makes it convenient for a driver should he/she have to exit driverside. I bet Rivian Engineers could connect the keyfob or some other method to the cargo door or come up with a way to allow drivers to open the cargo door while at the same time having it secure from bandits. The cupholders look too far forward for short drivers which now is a driving risk of accident should they reach to grab or place their drinks. I hear you on the cooler but again there's plenty of space forward to have a cooler or pocket for glasses, phones, etc drivers use in the cab.

The Seventies UPS step van that I worked a rural route in W. Pennsylvania out of for 23 years had 2 sliding doors and a translucent fiberglass roof in back. The old Ford 300 6 was way underpowered and super loud in the aluminum cab to where I finally began using industrial earplugs. What a relief! :) We had a clipboard with paper and pen and had to get signatures for every package..whoever we could get to sign, often neighbors. 120 stops a day was frequent, including bulk businesses and hospitals and 6-8 bulk pickups at the end of the day.

Having done this job in the UK for the past 6 months, the routes got heavier and heavier, (rarely got swept or "rescued"), to the point I was literally running from the van, never had time to eat and on quite a few occasions I didn't even have time to stop for a pee.... all for around £9 per hour, (current minimum wage is around £10.46), if you weren't fast enough..... In my experience, the faster you were, the more you were punished with more stops, drops and parcels

Man, those cargo fans sound like Rivian simply put small fans meant for server cooling in there, since they sound quite similar.

Regarding the driver door, there's a risk and safety issue to it as well -- if you open the driver door without looking for an incoming vehicle then it could damaged or slap against the driver door....Or even leaving the driver door open for some duration of time and some other car might will hit it. Sliding door on both sides are a good idea.

#1 Great content. Keep it up. #2 Seatbelts do stink on the EDV's. Try taking the seatbelt and wrapping it around the steering wheel. Easy access and a big game changer with speed. #3 The wireless charger does work but it has to be spot on. Pesonally I've never placed my peronsal device on that shelf as I'm afraid of it falling out. I almost always have the passenger door open. #4 Agreed with the storage compartments. #5 Out of curiousity, what are you looking for addresses and not driver aid # Again, love your content and you're super helpful for up and coming drivers. Well produced!

Looking for adddress is better than driver aid number imo, there are times where I have packages NOT on my itinerary but still part of my route (fuck warehouse workers). If im looking for only drivers aid numbers then Ill miss those mis sorted packages and have to re deliver them, but if im looking at the address, then I can deliver my missorts in 1 go

The rear marker/brake lights are so annoying at night. That delivery van doesn't need the whole rear lit up at night. The brightness literally overpowers every single vehicle on the road. So if your eyes aren't perfect then the glare from those extra bright rear lights actually over powers the other vehicles on the road.

What exactly is the complaing on the braking? That it's different? It's setup to be most efficient, good for a delivery vehicle too to use less brakes.

I feel you on missing actual physical buttons, I work in a mill, the old control room we had was all old mechanical switches and toggle buttons. It was so nice to push a button and hear it activate a relay and actually get some form of auditory feedback. The new control system is all on a computer, point and click a prompt on a computer display. I’ve clicked the wrong thing so many times and it’s frustrating. Physical buttons are a necessity for actual work. Probably why I won’t ever sell my F-150, infotainment is all physical buttons.

i feel like without redesigning the whole vehicle they can make a caddy for holding all your stuff that clicks in the passenger side like a glove box. and then make a AC unit that can be bought that can replace the fans using the same mount.

Hey Chris, when customers leave feedback after a delivery, do you guys get immediately notified? I always click all the compliments listed except “friendly” since I usually never see the delivery driver in person. But they get all 5 of the other ones. How do those affect you guys? I used to just select one option, until I realized you could leave more than one compliment.
@patrickmahoney3172
@patrickmahoney3172 10 месяцев назад
We don't get notified immediately, as the stats update every Wednesday, and they are anonymous, so we don't know which customer gave them. But, we very much appreciate you clicking on all the compliments that you feel apply. They definitely help on our scorecard for the boss and Amazon to see, so you are absolutely helping out your driver by giving that positive feedback, thanks! As a DSP driver, I now appreciate what drivers deal with, and I'm glad I used to click all the compliments like you do, before I even knew what delivering was like. Now I make sure I always give the compliments for whomever delivers to my house. A couple of easy mouse clicks is the least I can do! Thanks again for helping out your driver, it is definitely appreciated!

Great video, thanks for your hard work out there. Just as a tip, even if the wireless charger did work, I wouldn't recommend using it. Lots of issues with wireless chargers in cars getting way too hot and damaging phones. In my personal EV, I just disabled the wireless charging feature and just use the space as a phone rest. If I'm going to be in my car all day, I just bring a battery bank - for your use case you could command strip a bank into place near that little compartment to charge the phone or maybe you can tie it to something so you don't have to repeatedly buy command strips. Or you could get a battery case for your phone that you use during work days and just switch to a regular, slimmer case when you don't need the juice. Obviously not ideal though that you have to buy things to solve problems that Rivian could fix themselves in a refresh (the lack of storage is a particularly egregious oversight). Also, you may be able to disable the one pedal driving, not sure how much freedom you have to alter the settings in these trucks. I've also disabled this in my car because I don't like it. I have a Polestar, but I press the button that looks like a car and the setting is called one pedal driving. I also enable "creep", which simulates the way a traditional car will slowly creep forward or in reverse if you take your foot off the brake. Personal preference, but this is a more natural driving experience for me.
