I've written two books and my biggest realisation was that story writing is a _process,_ not an art. Creativity plays an important role, of course, but it's overwhelmingly about having the discipline to sit still for hours a day and keep tapping keys until it's done.

Thanks for saying you also suffer from self-doubt. It feels so pointless sometimes trying to write. ESPECIALLY when I'm blocked on finding the next direction for my characters. Have you done a video on "writer's block"? I know some people say "writer's block" is bullshit, but I do get blocked on where to take the story, even though I have an end in mind. What's the best way to overcome this?
@Dark_Peace
@Dark_Peace Год назад
I COMPLETELY DISAGREE Analysing stories while you watch/read/play them brings a whole new layer of fun and amplify their magic ! They aren't just stories anymore, they're a portal to the author's heart. It's like seeing a new color on the spectrum. And all the stories I experience become a duel between me and the creator about can I predict the plot before the reveals happen. I'm watching Darling In The Franxx (by the same people who made Kill la Kill, which I'm always talking about) right now, one episode every night so when I wake up in the morning I can start theorizing about all the plot elements. Today I made a mindmap with every info, character analysis, color scheme uses,... and I'm starting to get to the bottom of it. It's true that knowing how stories are made is both a superpower and a curse, especially in Murder Mysteries. I can find the culprit all the time. That's why Ace Attorney passions me, it's legit hard to figure out who done it and how (though I was starting to pick up the patterns of the first writer, thx god they got a new one). Like, my mom was watching the last episodes of Mr Robot, which I know nothing about, and I was just passing by and stopped to watch a few minutes. And there was a wild strange scene and my mom said she wasn't understanding what was happening. And I was like : "Yeah so he entered a parallel reality where nothing in the series actually happened" "How do you know that ?" "Well he looked around after waking up in his bed, because he's not supposed to be here. Then he hopped into a video call with that girl, I assume she's his girlfriend who probably died in the series because showing something ordinary that clearly shouldn't be there is the best thing to tell that this is definitly not normal. The dead relative is just the best choice for the impact. Then the computer screen flickered and showed something else, which is more indicating of a parallel reality than a dream." So yeah, it makes me crave for novelty because the rest becomes boring but it makes me enjoy the little treasures like Darling In the Franxx even more !

I'm not a writer, but quit reading fiction for 15 years because it had all become too obvious. I also became annoyed at authors' dishonesty and malice (John Cheever, for example). But now I find myself delighted by good structure, a great piece of dialogue, and clever pacing in themselves: everything I appreciated less consciously before, just as I enjoy a musician's virtuosity along with the more emotional, "natural" side.

I've found a lot of joy in getting into a routine of writing every day and I've improved leaps and bounds because of it, but I can be my own worst critic so I find comfort in knowing that successful writers aren't immune to this and still release amazing work, and that's driving me to never give up... That said, once I really started to understand story structure I could no longer watch or read a thing without my mind going into analysis mode. "Oh that's a Chekhov's Gun", "This is the all is lost point", "This subplot is gonna affect the main plot via xyz happening" etc. It does however make me really appreciate when writers can mix things up, subvert expectations and pull it off whilst still telling a great story though!

I can tell you those same 5 things are true in the music business too, and I would hazard to guess that it applies to most creative endeavours. I play drums in a band and: - Getting better at drums takes forever - It becomes difficult to enjoy a song for what it is instead of analyzing what each musician is doing at every single point in the song - I personally lack the drive to become as good as I would need to be to play my favorite songs from my favorite artists so I make due with playing what I can - After every show I go around believing that everyone secretly thinks I suck and tells me I played well just to be nice - I absolutely hate the social media aspect and the music business as a whole (lucky for me, the band is just a hobby and none of the members expect to make a living out of it)

I agree with all the points. Part of the magic being lost when I read also ties in with self doubt because I always compare my writing to what I’m reading and get down on myself. And the marketing thing also. I think to myself, is this even worth advertising? Am I just embarrassing myself? What if people are intrigued by the idea, then read it and hate it. 😅

I used to hate this, but eventually I hit a point where I had more ideas than time to test those ideas. Once you get bunkered down in drafting/revising/editing a novel, other ideas pop up, but unfortunately you can't chase them all (without abandoning the novel, of course).

For me, the worst part about being a writer is how lonely it is. I worked in IT for years before writing, and I miss seeing people very day. Making friends. Going out to lunch. Instead, I sit in my office in my house for 8-12+ hours a day, and only ever see my family. I love my family, but I miss being social. No matter how introverted you are, if you are going to be a writer (or already are) make sure to schedule time spent with other people. It'll keep you grounded by remembering what matters most in life, which will help you be a better writer.

Great vid. Thanks for your honesty. It’s true, it’s easier knowing others suffer the same/similar frustrations. All of these ring true for sure. But the one that I detest the most has got to be the Advertising & Marketing. … [that “dot dot dot” signifies the shower I just had to take 😊] I have very little respect for these industries.. until I try to do it myself. Then I realise how much of a craft, albeit loathsome craft, it really is. You call it “necessary evil”; I call it scab on the ass of progress. 😂 And it doesn’t matter what artistic craft you practice - it’s the same everywhere: the killer of creativity. So then “the best advertising is writing your next book” is fantastic advice. 👍🏻

1. I've had over 10 years of writing to get something out, and it feels like I've never got anywhere. I've conjured ideas, added things, changed things around, reworked, scrapped, and put ideas on hold and yet it feels like I never got anywhere. I created a script for an entire season of a theoretical TV series, but now I'm planning to reformat it into a novel, but I'm also at odds with another idea that I feel is a bit too similar to my TV show idea. 2. Weirdly enough, it's never really had much of an effect on me. I'm still just kicking back and enjoying the experience. Heck, knowing how hard writing is does make me sympathetic if the writer made some mistakes like maybe a character was unnecessary, a dialog was misplaced, etc. That does not stop me, of course, from getting upset when a flaw is jarring that even when someone like me could've prevented. That's a clear sign you did something very wrong. 3. Somehow I always had this sinking feeling that I know I'm never going to get everything I want down. At most I could see myself writing 40 novels which is what the creator of the Discworld series managed to do before passing away. I've never had the brightest imagination despite wanting to write Fantasy. I do play video games quite passionately, so I would understand what would make a really cool fight sequence, and I have a strong enough experience in psychological aspect of human nature that I can pull off a character focused story on a smaller scale regardless of setting. 4. I've always been at conflict with this especially since I've been told it the past I wasn't a good writer with no real elaboration on what I did wrong beyond a few writer buzzwords, and it leaves me wondering what I did wrong and sometimes I still don't simply because I just don't feel like sharing my works or joining anymore Writer groups like Discord groups out of embarrassment and the fear of wasting everyone's time. The first thing I need to understand is completely ignore anyone that does not elaborate or just acts like a condescending douche that needs their food on a silver plate arranged in a very over-specific way. Even if I make massive screw-ups and not know what I'm doing, if they can't say anything to me, then their "criticisms" go in the garbage. 5. I have not got that far in the writing process, but I'm not even looking forward to when that day comes. I've had elaborate ideas in the past to get myself out there, but not even close to ready to put them into motion just yet.

@RM-yw6xe

I love your videos, you have helped me much more than I anticipated already. However, I am not going to pull any punches on this one, as I see glaring problems. 1. A writer doesn't write to be published. A writer doesn't even write for the audience. Those are secondary and misguided. A writer writes only because they can't stand not writing. Seriously, if you're not enjoying the process of story creation... maybe you need a different outlet. 2. I take what famous authors say with a very large salt shaker worth. They can say anything they want, "I created a whole language", "I wanted to quit and be customer service all my life... it was a passion". Comments of that kind do not help or encourage. It gives a false sense that you can muscle through your angst and hate when you really need to face up to the fact that you do not like writing and it is not really a passion. 3. As for world building and fantasy. I suggest becoming a dungeon master. Run a campaign for just 1 year and you will be set with anything you need to write fantasy. I happen to disagree, you aren't stuck writing just one genre and one should never "stick with what your comfortable with", provides no opportunity for growth. Fact: growth only happens when we challenge ourselves. If you hate writing and want to quit you NEED to reassess your reasons for writing and where that passion really is.

The thing I hate the most about writing is how most people regard it as a waste of time and say I should focus on pursuing a real career. The truth is I don’t give a crap about money, I just want to create something beautiful and I don’t want anyone telling I should be using my precious time on things THEY find more productive and fulfilling, because heeding that kind of advice is the biggest waste of time ever in my opinion; and I’m guilty of falling into that trap.
@pruthin
@pruthin Год назад
I find it interesting that worldbuilding is keeping you from writing a fantasy novel because I often love the fantasy setting, but I feel that fantasy novels focus far too much on worldbuilding and lore and end up with no story. Even with Game of Thrones, a fantasy story I like, it's the character journeys that draw me in, rather than the worldbuilding or overarching wars or whatever. There are tons of fantasy worlds that are already well-known to readers, and I think you could pull familiar things from those stories to create your own without needing to do much worldbuilding at all, and your story might be better for it. Or, if worldbuilding is part of the appeal, but you struggle with coming up with all of the details, I have another idea. Write a novel set in your fantasy universe, but design the story to have a very limited exposure to the world. Set it in an isolated village, or a single household, or a trail between two cities, or a castle dungeon or something. That way you won't need to design the whole world immediately and the task should feel much more approachable. Write it the way you would a thriller. But as you spend so much time writing within the world, you will inevitably think up world details that can form the foundation of your fantasy setting. And I think you could make a good book along the way. I'd love to see one of your interesting book premises applied to a fantasy world. The man who learns a spell and must cast it six times before he can...unlearn it. Or...something

I understand where the second point is coming from because I've felt that way at one point or another too, but honestly, I don't think viewing stories with an over-analytical mind is a bad thing. It doesn't have to mean that stories have "lost their magic," it just means that you've grown to appreciate stories for what they are and that you're viewing them from a different perspective than when you were younger.

Good advice Brandon. I think it's helpful to write without genre constraints. Start writing about yourself, your life, or something that you know firsthand that is interesting. I think it's hard and almost impossible to write something interesting if your own life isnt interesting. Start with autobiographical fiction, and then the possibilities become endless

@indepthliterature
@indepthliterature Год назад
@huntercoleman460 I don't know, to me the best literature is autobiographical. Look at thomas wolfe, Ernest Hemingway, jack Kerouac, tolstoy and the great novels. Making up random characters is cool I guess but they tend to read as disingenuous to me. I guess I just prefer more classic style literature versions genre fiction. Steven King and Cormac McArthy are good writers but they don't hold a candle to the classic novelists that's wrote about themselves
@huntercoleman460

@@indepthliterature I disagree. I have nothing against autobiographies, but I don’t think my life is interesting enough for me to write one. Example, I’m not some good record winning singer, I’m not a war hero, and I didn’t discover a cure for cancer. You get what I’m saying?

The thing I hate most about being a writer is that once you understand the structure of stories with all the beats and the plot points falling at certain percentages, it just becomes a formula. The way characters need to be constructed, the way you plot out your outline, it’s all just one big system and if you deviate from the system your book will fail. Audiences nowadays are hard wired to accept certain book structures and story beats falling at certain places. People also have shorter attention spans and so you can’t start a fantasy novel with an info dump. I basically hate all the “rules” of writing.

Writers block. Hate it with a passion, especially when I have ideas for a beginning and an end, but I don't know how to get from one to the other. In the time I spend trying to figure that out, new ideas for endings come up and it causes an infinite loop. Eventually I just pick something and go with it, but it changes almost every time I open the document, and yeah, in some ways that loop still continues. It's hard to stick to something, which creates the writers block, and it's also hard to figure certain scenes out (sometimes due to not knowing the right word to use), and because of that, I can't write a new story in a timely manner.

you immediately caught my attention when you said that you used to write fantasy and now you do thriller/horror. I had this happen to me as well, and struggled over idea of being only a horror author but I have embraced it as it my main focus. It's so true that not having to worry about building a world helps you focus on your craft. Also, I struggle with the marketing and advertising aspect because I just want to write stories, not worry about hyping up my readers and thinking of what to post on social media. Now the idea of interacting with fans sounds more interesting because I love a good conversation. It's more of the getting people's attention part because I've never been kinda person that tries to grab peoples attention, I try to do that with my opening scenes lol.

Great channel brother, and I feel you. Got my first novel published a little over five years ago, and I'm about halfway through my second (I also write supernatural thriller). For me, the worst thing has always been the whole agent/publisher angle. They're the gatekeepers and whether or not your story is worth a damn becomes a matter of their opinion, which can be frustrating if you don't end up in front of the right ones. I'm actually in the middle of changing publishers, looking to hit the UK market as I hear our type of writing goes a long way over there. Great video, wish you all the luck on your future ideas.

Would you be interested in making a video about the troubles you've encountered when you tried to pursue that goal? I know it doesn't fit the "how-to" format of your channel, but I think it would be really interesting to hear.

Marketing doesn't bug me so much, but advertising sure does. I don't know the statistics for books, but for videogames, a game with negative reviews and advertising money will (on average) sell 3 times as well as a game with positive reviews and no advertising money... which stinks. I've seen so many outstanding video games, musicians, novels, artists, etc. slip through the cracks and just not get noticed in the first place, largely due to having little-to-no money spent on advertising.

@WriterBrandonMcNulty
@WriterBrandonMcNulty Год назад
@@shantelwithers758 It's a good thing you reached out to me here because your email went to my spam folder and I probably would've missed it. Anyway, I'm guessing you're familiar with the concept of Want (selfish goal) vs. Need (personal development). You know the Need in your story is to get hope and inspiration to live again, so the Want should take the MC in the opposite direction (or at least in a very different direction). I'm not sure of the circumstances of the child's death, but your MC might want revenge or at the very least closure. MC might become obsessed with getting closure in some way. For example, if the child died in a car accident, MC might go after the auto industry or the dealership that sold the vehicle. You also might want to build your external conflict around the divorce (you didn't say if the couple was married, but if they are and the MC wants a divorce, that can create some legal obstacles and marital conflict). Another thing... What leads MC to the daughter's journal? If the journal appears at the end of the story, what is preventing MC from finding it at the beginning? Did someone steal journal? Maybe the journal contains some truth that could harm someone powerful. You also mentioned that MC2's goal is to keep the relationship together. You might want to look at this when creating MC1's goal. Have their goals conflict or have their motivations conflict (MC1 hopes to solve the problem one way, but MC2 disagrees with MC1's methods). Hope this helps. External conflict is often tough because you have to find balance with the obstacles you throw at the characters. If the obstacles is too tough or too easy for the MC to overcome, the story basically ends there.

Man, I suffer from #2 so much... At the same time I can enjoy so much more of the stories when they are good. #3 is so true. And more and more I understand why some people co-write stories. Having that co-writer helps so much because its another person giving a completely different view on that same story you are working on. And that feel of wanting to write something different is so real, but it is as Professor Olavo de Carvalho once taught me: You got to do what you got to do. So like it or not if you are good at one thing, well, keep at it and work on the other stuff on the side, one day you just decide to go and publish it because why not. But until then you work on what you work.

At the point of writing that I am up to, there are two things i detest about writing. One of them is my perfectionist ways. I don't like repeating words (particularly adjectives) too near each other. I read a fan fiction I wrote years ago, and every other line people are saying is defined by "mused" or "musing" and i weanted to kill myself. The other, being a mystery writer, is wondering if i am being too obvious in my hint drops for readers. Because I know how everything is supposed to work, how the crime is committed and how they plan to get away with it, I have brain cramps on wondering "is this part of the scene too obvious in who is the killer/criminal?" that it starts to weigh in on my self-confidence. It can kill the magic of the story, so it is something I just need to work through.

@@WriterBrandonMcNulty Then try to train yourself to stop looking for those things. I struggled to turn my brain off once I started learning about filmmaking (mostly VFX) and had to purposely force myself to stop noticing shoddy greenscreens, poorly integrated CGI, overdone color grading and that sort of stuff and just try to recapture the sense of wonder when looking at movies. I would posit that you can probably find a way to develop a similar switch for story elements where you can choose to be in "pro writer mode" or "general audience mode".

Same here. I love analyzing story structure and character development. I might be a critic at heart. There are a lot of stories that I love, and I like understanding the reasons why I love them instead of just responding on a base level. And likewise, I like being able to understand why other stories don't work with me rather than only being able to respond at a superficial level like I see in a lot of fan arguments.

I don't think that stories lose their magic. I know a little sleight of hand and can do magic tricks - that means, that I'm not fooled by most tricks - I still love Penn & Teller though - I can still admire their skill. Knowing what it takes to pull off those illusions changes how I experience it. I know it's an illusion - but I can very much appreciate a well-thought-out trick. And I know when someone is bad at it. I can tell why it doesn't quite work; why he fails to impress the audience. Same with books and movies - Now I tend to be able to tell why I like some books/movies better than others, whereas before I started writing, It was just a feeling. I couldn't really tell you why Revenge of the Sith didn't sit well with me, whereas I loved The Dark Knight.
