As a recent masters graduate, my best advice is 1.) Do not be afraid to strongly defend your work and argue your points constructively at critiques. You know your own design more than a professor or anyone else ever will. Don’t tuck your tail between your legs and just “okay..” after every point they make. Believe it or not they appreciate you standing your ground for the building as it shows how passionate you are about your work. (This isn’t to be confused with making excuses on why you left things out of the project don’t do that) 2.) Do not be afraid to use scrap and recycled material for models to save money. I can’t tell you the amount of times I’ve spent $0 on a model utilizing scraps and recycled materials while other students spent hundreds and I still got a better score. Arch school isn’t pay to win.
@elliottmorton3080
@elliottmorton3080 4 года назад
Completely agree, One thing i've noticed is that unless you have a really open minded reviewer, it wil always seem like they are just trying to rip your project to pieces. Use the critiques as a stepping stone almost like a tutorial conversation with a few more people watching ;) So don't stress about them, especially in first year it will all seem daunting to begin with. P.s. do the work when they tell you to do it, no joke, it builds up Fast!!!

@@veronicaphiri7432 for drafting and 3-D modeling I find Revit to be superior while most students prefer Rhino and for presentations the Adobe apps like illustrator and Indesign are the best route as they are low price monthly subscriptions.

Would you say the materials for models get expensive? Do you have any tips on how to get around any expensive costs for materials in general? I’m interested in landscape architecture and I know that they also utilize a lot of models

What I’m understanding from this: -Have multiple flash drives that are labeled and organized -Look back at previous work to find new inspiration -Use Google drive first for rough work then move it to word or other programs afterwards -Schedule work -Do your own research -Read 1 or more architecture field guides -Save some extra money when you have it -Competitions matter

I'm not one, but I can fairly understand, and say yes, that is a fact. My big sis back in her college days always pulled an all-nighter, she said she was already lucky if she got 3-6 hours of sleep. Some or most times her work wasn't still finished (I even, at most times, wake up 2-3 in the early morning and see her still doing her archi work), and in the weekends, she's 24/7 lying in bed, sleeping like a log, only wakes up when she needed to use the bathroom, eat or drink. Sis didn't even bother changing out of her uniform and just directly goes to sleep as she is when she gets home. I was still pretty young, like around 11-14 years of age at that time, so I wasn't thinking into it that much. Now I'm nearly sixteen and thinking back, holy crap, my big sis wasn't having the best time of her life at that time. Thanks to that, the household chores formerly done by her were given to me and my twin bro. (A family of seven here, a dad and a mom, one big sis, two big bros, and us two twins bros, me being the youngest) The trip to her uni and back home were also really long and tiresome, guess that becomes a common thing when you enter college. She had a 3 year course of architect learning before dropping out, quite a shame that she only needed 2 more years to graduate college. But she's now a contact centre agent and is a really good illustrator that also does a little part-time job of drawing anime-manga-ish stuff. :3

Golden tip from a first year architecture student: Don't procrastinate seriously... work starts building up from the 2nd week already It's only the 1st month and there are 12 people who have quit that I know of And I am now for the 2nd time on the verge of a mental breakdown lmao, no time for parting if you wanna be one of the better students
@David-bx2mw
@David-bx2mw 4 года назад
architecc LP as a recent Masters grad, I’d say two things to maybe help you out for where you are at now- - Just remember where you stand as a first year and be humble about knowing that you don’t know anything about architecture yet and that you will graduate many years from now still not knowing many things that architects need to know. Too many people feel like they are architecture experts now since they are in the major and it can really revisit you and bite you if you have that mentality. - If you are having too many mental breakdowns, be sure just to strongly consider if this is for you. Your mental health is very important. The reason I say this is because people assume school is hard but once they start working it’s all rainbows and sunshine from there when in reality the workload you have now will be the workload for the rest of your life if you continue this. Just learn to embrace the hard work and use your time to do what you’re truly passionate about.

3rd year of architecture school here. I love you for making this video! Sometimes I had to go back and watch it to remind myself. One thing is as long you have passion and good stamina to keep up your work of process will make good progress and survive, makes yourself to try work out 40 minutes a day (4 times a week). You might loose sleep, and if you willingly want to make sacrifice you’ll be fine. Do what you love or you’ll feel like it’s daunting task and feel under pressure.

I know this is not what you want to hear but you are way toooo young to put so much pressure on you! I think you should take a lot of time to explore things that interest you! Read books and watch videos about things that interest you and try doing those things yourself. Don't worry if you're not good at something, that comes after, but focus on finding what exactly you enjoy doing! I'm glad that this video helped you but don't worry about setting your future in stone just yet. Have fun and explore. Thank you for you comment and your compliment, and I wish you lots of luck!

I'm in year two of architecture, and it's shocking how quickly the pace and size of projects increases. First we designed shelters for hikers, now a year later we are working on how to fill a GIANT old factory with new development. And, the first year was very much about one-man-tasks, now we are almost always working in teams. Architecture wasn't the obvious choice for me but I don't regret it: it is super inspiring, you meet a lot of fun creative people and you get a lot of freedom in your studies. A major challenge for me is staying organized, you create a LOT of things that you need to somehow archive (I still haven´t figured out the best way for this yet). I go to a Swedish architecture school which has a more technical profile, maybe that differs from the american education. Anyhow, I know for a fact that you will NEVER stop studying when choosing a career in architecture, you have to embrace that you will learn something new every day for the rest of your life.

They will give you books of extremely valuable information regarding tech, history, sustainability, and drawings, but if you don’t devote your free time towards delving deeper into practice and the architectural topics of your interest, you will eventually find that the firm you have been hired into isn’t the one you really wish you were in.

I'm a Freshman in high school and I know its only been like 2 months since school started (at least for me) but I already know I want to do architect because I have been interested in it for a little while now and I don't know much, but it is a passion of mine I want to pursue, and my family members keep telling me I would be great at it because I love designing houses on video games like Minecraft and sims and such, and they see what I create and tell me I would do wonderful at it, I know playing videos games is nowhere near close to what an actual architect does but I still want to move forward with wanting to be an architect and thank you for this video because it gave me some good tips for when I'm older and studying architect! :)

EXCELLENT VIDEO! I live in a pre-fabricated house here in West Palm Beach, Florida, a Sears-Robuck kit that my mother and I believe was originally built in the early 1930s. Regrettably, building records from long ago are nearly impossible to procure now because the county has a practice of burning their records every decade. However, even though it was a Sears kit done in the "Craftsman" style, it is clear that someone put a lot of time and care into how it was built. It feels like a proper home instead of a product. For instance, the floors are made out of Dade County pine, a wood that is now extinct. More modern structures can be beautiful, there just needs to be care.

Nice video. I really liked that you disclosed that you designed empty buildings without thinking about the whole finished college project. I have an engineering degree and for a few years I worked for a theatrical supply / lighting company. One of the most interesting tasks we did was service work on theatres. I had also worked as a technician and production manager in some of the same spaces AND visited some of the venues as a customer so I got to see many aspects of how they functioned. It was surprising how many of the venues had problems and faults that were the result of poor architecture and design. I'm sure they fulfilled the client's brief but that shouldn't be the ultimate goal. My advice to architecture students would be talk to end users as if the project is really going to be built. So if your project is something remotely specialised - a restaurant, cinema, bus station, conference centre, sports facility, TV studio etc then find out how they function in the real world by talking to people (the workers too not just the PR person or the managers) and especially ask to see the side the pubic don't have access to. Then take some of that on board when you start to design.
@Moochers
@Moochers 4 года назад
That's some good advice. Suggesting the client to hire a specialist for the specific program is also appropriate. 🍻😃

can totally relate to everything mentioned in this vid! They don’t teach you everything in architecture school; one must really initiate to read more arch’tl books as well as practice drawing to acquire better knowledge and skills. Also, I personally think it’s hard to get through architecture school if you’re alone, so find people who you share same sentiments with bc I swear, uni life will be a bit easier.

this is kind of interesting since i havent gone into architecture for my uni, or if i can even get in, but most of the tips i have already been doing them bc of my course in poly. (we have that in singapore like after secondary school) ps. my course in poly was retail and hospitality design but im the last batch :( basically we learn interior and some architecture but also learn things specifically needed for retail spaces or malls and hotels! its p cool bc we get to learn the branding side of things and also electrically and a lot of things

i'm a second year student in a landscape architecture program.. very stressful, not sure if it's for me tbh but i have no idea what else i would study.. my favorite part of landscape architecture is the ornamental horticultural aspect but most of it is larger scale urban planning sort of things so i rarely can play with little details like what specific flowers should go where.. :/// i don't have any universities around me that offer degrees for ornamental horticulture.

I am going into grade 10 in September I've always wanted to do architecture since I was 10 it was kind of a no-brainer and I've found it's my passion well I think it is. I love anything to do with art. although a lot of pressure was put on me for architectural engineering and I did explore my other interests because I knew it may not be what I wanted to do but by now and 5 almost 6 years of exploring and researching all my interests I think I've decided to stick with it although I still have 2 years to decide I'm not rushing anything and i will continue to explore my interests and see if I end up back here if i do I will watch this video again when I'm applying to university.
