Keep in mind that since they are new, they might not be set up how you want it. As they grow, feel free to make suggestions so that we could all steer these two communities in the RIGHT WAY! Here are the links:I decided I wanted to become an architect sometime around high school. I didn’t know anything about the career, except that a lot of people often say you need to be really good at math and drawing. Even though I wasn't too good at either, I decided I still wanted to become one because it sounds like a cool idea to me. That’s pretty much the only reason why.
On my first day, I sat down for my very first class : Design I. I had NO idea what to expect. A few minutes later the professor showed up with her iPhone in hand. She did not say anything; she just stood in front of the class, held up her phone, and snapped a picture. She said that the reason she did this was because when the semester was over, she promised that half of us would have quit. That…. Was my first day of school. I promise you, I felt like getting up and leaving. I wish I would have had a better idea of what was in store for me so that I would not have had such a shock, and that’s why I made this video, to give you an idea as to what architecture is really like.
For starters, you can pretty much divide architecture school into two parts : lower division and upper division. Lower division is made up of technical drawing classes, design classes from level one to four, history, and theory classes. It’s common to also take your college core classes while taking your architecture classes. But what does this all mean!? Let’s go over it:

You left out one important thing everyone learns after one year of architecture... They learn the ability to live on 6 hours of sleep for every 48 hours. We called it Architorture due to this... But it made us all strong.

@Charlene Watts But why is that? Do they really give you so many tasks so that no matter how wise you plan out your day, you will be sleep very little? How can that be? That sounds like hell.
@VocaFan4ever
@VocaFan4ever 3 года назад
@@abdullahkuzhan7247 based on my experience, there is a lot of work but the problem is teachers don't consider that we work a little slower than expected because were still "figuring things out". Another problem is, after you "figure out" that one thing, for instance, an efficient workflow to designing buildings BAM suddenly we have to do urban planning--another skillset we have no experience in, hence we cant estimate how long we would take to finish it, which results in inaccurate time planning. Plus we have to "figure out" this new topic again. So it ends up with late nights and little sleep.

One thing I couldn’t ignore was the thesis tip 8:12 Wrote it Incase someone wanted to take a note of it. Every semester, pay close attention to what interests you in architecture. It doesn’t matter if you’re general or specific.When something intrigues you, write it down. Eventually you will have a long list of topics to write about.

Our professor did something very similar. She told us to look around, really pay attention to all of the people and remember the faces, because they won't be here for long. Also another professor told us not to get too comfortable with each other, because half of us would be gone within the next few semesters.

Great video ! I'm going to be in my second semester soon and I love hearing about your love for architecture, because it reminds me of why I chose it in the first place. The one thing that still worries me is the fact that a lot of people tell me that it will be very hard to get a good job later on and that I won't earn enough money, unless I become a famous architect. Sometimes I'm afraid that the hard work and all the money, we're spending on the projects, won't pay off. Maybe you could do a video on that? It really freaks out a lot of my pears as well.

You're bang on with what you've said. I'm only halfway through my first year (already practically live in the studio lol) and a third of the class has left. I've also spoken to numerous students varying from years 1 to master students in final year and they've basically said the exact same as what you've said in this video. I will say to anyone studying Architecture or any student actually regardless of the subject. Do not hesitate to talk with people in years further than you, because I remember in my first weeks I felt quite intimidated by the students near the end of the course due to their skills/abilities they've learned. But what you will find is that they are more than happy and actually appreciate you asking them questions and from that, you will gain relevant information on what to learn, look out for and how to progress your skills. It's also fun exchanging ideas on your current projects with them because many of the times we both walk away with something we may have not considered, regardless of their experience.

@@Moochers Yes, I am still alive and drawing. I am a licensed architect and a sole proprietor of my own firm. It was a bit of an adjustment for architecture students graduating in that era. We graduated in the middle of a recession and nobody could find jobs. I was lucky to find my first job selling plants in a nursery for below minimum wage, but that only lasted 1 week since I knew nothing about plants. Back then everything was sketched, drawn, colored, and lettered by hand. Autocad didn't exist until a year later, and of course everything was learned by buying a lot of books since there were no computers and internet. Your readers should know that the all nighters we did in college doesn't end at graduation. It's only the beginning of what is expected in our careers. I am still pulling all nighters to make deadlines for clients, and while my clients appreciate the effort, my wife is not as understanding. :) Looking back, there were better careers that I should have pursued instead. Oh well.

as a first year architect student in another country, i agree with a lot of ur points but the public speaking absolutely didn’t bother me. The worst parts of this course is probably staying up till 2am doing drawings/work and of course being unlucky in a group project (aka being put in a group with a bunch of lazy people). A lot of people say architecture is terrifying, but I disagree (although this will probably change in the second year). As long as u put in hard work and effort, you should be ok in architect school. I like how you said your first year projects seemed “weird”, but to be honest, the two projects I’ve had so far have really been interesting and fun as i got to express my own ideas and innovate in order to find a solution to a somewhat hard to understand (very abstract) brief. Thinking about functionality rather than aesthetics also helps a lot too since once a concept and a simple model is in place, you have room to innovate and improve it. It would be interesting to see a video on your first projects and how you tackled your briefs...

@@sarahbrodbeck6444 In that case my advice (how ever unwarranted) would be, allow yourself the time and patience. If something takes more time for you to figure out, take that time. make concession some where else. The better you understand and figure out your programs, the easier it will get to experiment with forms and materials. And that figuring out will help you to push the boundaries more and exercise your ideas better. Also, take time to watch your classmates critics. you can learn a lot from those too.

Sadia Naheen thank you for your advice i totally agree. I’m that kid that takes notes on everyone’s critique, i find it fun. my limits come when there is a shortage of time, which is what i think you are talking about in a way. When i procrastinate or don’t have much time i revert to my old ways instead of embracing this new process. in the upcoming semester I will for sure try to be more conscious of this. again thank you for your advice i always appreciate it!

I’m really into architecture and in my country , in high school you have to choose a stream to go into in your 4th year (my high school is 6yrs) so I’m definitely choosing industrial technology. I’ve actually been watching a lot of videos and I actually saw one say architecture are one of the hardest majors so I’m really excited to challenge myself in college but from now I’m a 14yr old in high school

I'm hopefully gonna study architecture next year (still applying) and I'm a bit nervous about how expensive it could be because I have a pretty tight budget. Is there a way to keep a low budget or is the expensive part inevitable? I know I probably won't have time for a part time job but I wish I did sometimes.

Thanks for making this video! I love hearing from people who took architecture but weren't fully familiar with the field when they started, because I'm taking architecture more for what I can learn from it rather than pursuing a career in the field, and my lack of passion worries me. (But I do have a lot of determination and interest in learning so hopefully that'll make up for it) I have a question regarding the software, do universities require students to use specific ones? (Like how Adobe software is mandatory in art schools) Or is it up to the students? And if yes, do they offer student discounts? Asking cuz I'm tight on money and prefer not to invest before knowing if I can get a better deal!

Hey I’m thinking of changing my major to architecture suddenly because it’s always caught my attention and honestly as lame as it may sound, my favorite part of The Sims is the building and I could spend hours and hours building! Also I appreciate cute built houses, idk.😂 but like you said people say “you gotta be good at math”, so my question is, is that true? What kind of math and how much is it involved? Also advice please:(
@Moochers
@Moochers 4 года назад
No, you don't have to be good at math to be an architect. It helps but architecture is more about design and coordination of elements that go into creating a building. So if anything , you want to be good at time management, good at dealing with criticism, be able to work under stress. But you don't have to be naturally good at those things. You'll learn like I did. Like most do. My advice is to research the career as much as you can before you jump in! There is lots to learn and RU-vid is full of info :)

about a month ago i had my first midterm presentation ever and i was really nervous because i thought my project was not so great cause we have alot of restrictions and i prepared it really well but the actuall input we got was garbage i know that probably applies not to everyone cause the professors basically said "that is a cool project but you should not think of it as a building" i have no idea what that was about i mean what else do architects do build buildings without thinking about buildings? really confusing then i continued working and changing aspects of my project and then they said that it is incredibly awesome but to this day i do not know why they think it is. (Probably having everything online since 1.5 years is a big part of the confusion)

Would you recommend going straight to a 5 yr arch program or go to community college first then tranfer? Not sure which way I want to go, most of the arch schools are private and the tuition is just too high. I'm thinking about USC and Cal poly slo, can you give me some advice on different schools?

I'm currently in the military and have plans on going to architecture school when I get out in a few years. If I do all the basic core college classes like math and english and all that online now, will that shorten the 5 year degree a little bit or alleviate some of the stress? Or is it even possible to bust out the core classes now?
@Moochers
@Moochers 4 года назад
Yes. If you can , get those out of the way. It won't necessarily make you spend less time in school but it will allow you to focus only on architecture when the time comes. You will need all the time you can get. Also , do some research on schools you would like to go for you bachelors/masters and ask them if it's possible to go in to their graduate program if you already have a bachelors in something else. My school did this - they allowed you to get your masters in 2 years if you already had a bachelor's in another degree. It won't be easy, but a lot of my friends did this and it was super helpful for them.

It depends... It wasn't hard for me. All my friends from school were able to find jobs pretty quickly as well. It helps if you get along with your professors; they can refer you to firms as they did for me. Also, you should start interning as early as possible. Btw, as far as interning goes, it's okay if you do a short non-paid internship..... but try to always get compensated!
