X-ray aprons are staple items in the radiology department. They are an absolute necessity. However, there is very little information on the care and consideration of these products. Here are some helpful hints on choosing and tending to these garments.

I never understood shielding if the gonads were not in the irradiated area. Even if it lies within 5cm/2inches of the irradiated area. If the LBD represents the irradiated field size why is anything outside of that shielded(on the patient)? I understand scatter effects other people in the room and they must be shielded but how would shielding a patient stop x ray scatter occurring within the body? If anything it would trap it inside right? What am I missing here?

Tungsten is Radioactive...

:) Great observation, Corey! Yes, technically, it is...because it contains an element, W180, which in and of itself is .12% radioactive with an extremely long half-life. Because the radiation levels are so low, tungsten is generally regarded as NOT radioactive. However, the textbook answer would be yes. I love input like this. Please keep them coming.
