5 Things We Like about the Nissan Pathfinder (and 5 We Don't)! // 2023 Nissan Pathfinder Platinum

We've had the Nissan Pathfinder several times over the past year to review, and we always come away impressed with how much it gets right in this category. It's stylish, comfortable, spacious, and pretty well optioned compared to its rivals. This Nissan Pathfinder Platinum trim has almost everything you can option a Pathfinder with, and Megan was smitten with its looks, especially the black roof and two tone interior. The only downside of the Nissan Pathfinder is that it just doesn't stand out in any one particular category. It's big enough, quick enough, and comfortable enough to be mentioned in the same breath as the Kia Telluride and Hyundai Palisade, but those twins offer even more content for the money. It looks as good or better than the Honda Pilot, but the Pilot has a more refined and sporty ride. It's WAY better looking and slightly larger than the Toyota Highlander, but can't even come close to matching the Highlander Hybrid's fuel efficiency. That puts the Nissan Pathfinder in a weird in between position. It's not a bad thing, just something worth noting, but if you like the way the Nissan Pathfinder looks, you won't be disappointed in the experience. It's a solid all around three row SUV choice.

I guess it des make sense that the front parking sensors are active regardless of forward or reverse, as when backing out of a spot, you do need indication of how close the front corner is to the other vehicles.

@@jax1079 The cool thing is, if you look at the display between the tach and speedometer, it indicates where around the vehicle the obstacles are being detected. That is a good way to see if the beeping is from behind or in front of you. Pretty cool.

My dislikes for my 2023 SL Premium same Red/Back color: Yes, the parking brake button. My does turn off then I put it in drive, but I have to hit the gas pedal. Yes, front sensor is a pain when in reverse. Shutting off the backup sensor when I have a trailer on it. Shutting off the engine Start/Stop every time I start the engine. Biggest grip is when I turn on the cruise control the screen stays in it, I have to manually reset back to my normal driving screen.

Great stuff. When you reviewed the 2022 Pathfinder in Jul 22 you did not recommend it. It seems as you have reviewed the 2023 Pathfinder twice now you do recommend it? Are you seeing differences in the 2023 that make it better than the first generation 2022?
@jax1079
@jax1079 10 месяцев назад
Well… I think it depends on which one of us you ask. Since I was mainly doing the channel by myself then, I didn’t really find any standout feature to recommend the Pathfinder despite the fact that it’s generally good. (I’m also kind of biased against vehicles with soft rides that lack a measure of control.) That said, Megan REALLY likes the way the Pathfinder looks inside and out, and doesn’t find the ride objectionable. She’s much more positive on the Pathfinder. For comparison, I’d take a Highlander hybrid over this but she wouldn’t. I think that’s what makes our reviews unique now: real world family use with two unique perspectives.
@scofielddan
@scofielddan 10 месяцев назад
@@jax1079 Fair enough and really like the real world perspective. I think your family road trips are very insightful as well. I have a 4WD 4Runner right now that has the V8 which Toyota no longer offers and the newer ones towing maxes out at 5k so that is not an option. My 4Runner is getting up there in miles so I'm looking for a replacement that can tow a boat/trailer between 5,500 and 5,800 lbs fully loaded. Other than a full size truck which I don't really want there are few choices. I'm considering the Pathfinder Rock Creek which according to the spec should be able to do the job based on the 6k capacity and 4WD. If you come across any real world stories of pulling a boat out of the water with a Pathfinder I'd love to hear that story ;-) Cheers!!!

@@scofielddan FYI, I towed a 5,800 lb. travel trailer for about 80 miles with no problems. I have the 2023 SL with the Premium pkg. Got 12.5 mpg. Most of my trip was highway and not many hills.

Good and fun review! This is slightly irrelevant, but we have a 2021 Nissan Rogue, where the backup sensor causes the car to slam on its brakes every time we back out of the sloped driveway because it thinks we're about to hit the pavement, where it levels off. Our 2019 didn't have this issue. It is the most ridiculous, annoying, and maddening thing I've ever seen. It's not possible to turn reverse automatic braking permanently. I truly hope the Pathfinder doesn't have the same issue because it sits higher and hopefully doesn't mistake the pavement for an object. Aside from that, every time you use cruise control, after you're done, dash doesn't return to whatever display you had prior, so you have to hunt for whatever you typically like to see, such as the speedometer. Some of the lane keeping features have annoying sound and vibrating alerts, but I haven't checked to see if there are ways to make it less so. I'm worried that the Pathfinder genetically inherits some of these issues as well (including the parking sensor issue you mentioned). Makes me wonder what were they thinking...
@jax1079
@jax1079 9 месяцев назад
I agree that there are some little details that would go a long way to improving the user experience. Nissan gets a lot more right than they get wrong, though. They’re on the right path, and the Pathfinder improvements prove it.

@@jax1079 Yeah, definitely nice looking and competitively priced package. One thing I'm definitely disappointed in is that Nissan was the first brand to introduce 360 view cameras, which has been available on SV models for years... Apparently, Nissan yanked it from SV and it's now only available on SL and Platinum trim levels, which to me is just greedy. Other than that, however... 🙂

Agreed, ride and handling sucks! I have a 2023 SV and feels really unestable and wobbling at +50mph. I believe is an issue with the shocks and entire suspension system, feels the car is bouncing all the time, even with the smallest tiny bump. Guess what Dealer says... it is NORMAL... what a news.
@jax1079
@jax1079 5 месяцев назад
Sadly, this is how I feel in general about this almost great SUV: the Pathfinder gets so many things nearly right, but it lets itself down in certain critical areas (and doesn’t have a definitive ace versus the competition). It’s a shame for an otherwise handsome and well priced SUV.

If I wanted a review by a typical bickering couple I would click on this. The dynamic here is EXACTLY like real life in that it’s incredibly annoying. After this review I’m going to seek out a more soothing video like 30 minutes of finger nails on a chalkboard or maybe somebody mistreating puppies.

Sorry but Meagan drove me nuts 🙄 She was just so annoying and trying way too hard to be funny. People who watch car videos aren’t in it for the humor. I have this car in the Baja Storm and it my most favorite vehicle I’ve ever had, and I’ve had a lot…from Honda’s to BMW’s. This is my first Nissan and I’m ecstatic! Hubby wants to trade it in for an X6 and I said absolutely NOT!

Zero chance I take a junky Nissan over a Honda Pilot or Telluride
@jax1079
@jax1079 10 месяцев назад
Their reputation isn’t doing them any favors, for sure. The Pathfinder feels pretty great inside with quality materials, more so than most of the competitors. If Nissan can land a few big swings like the Ariya and keep quality of volume models under control, they might be able to right the ship. The Pathfinder shows that Nissan can be competitive in the fiercest of categories, but they need to STAY competitive for buyers to come back.
