5 Things You’ll HATE About KOA Campgrounds!

Come walk with us as we share the 5 things most people come to hate about KOA campgrounds. #1 is that the sites are often tightly packed close together. Everyone has a story. Our worst campground experience was at the Herkimer Diamond KOA. We picked this campground on our way home from Acadia National Park. We pulled into the campground and found people playing cornhole on our site. But, there was no other place to play except in the road. They moved their stuff off and we pulled in. After a long day of driving our hope was to rest up and get a good night’s sleep. But after we setup we noticed the people were getting off the adjacent river from tubing all day. It felt like every adult was drunk and our neighbors may have been the worst. We asked them to not start a fire as their fire pit was beneath our slide out. They started their fire anyway. All we could do was pull our slideouts in and lock everything up before we called it a night. Many of these campgrounds were built before RVs and 5th wheels exceeded 40 feet long and had multiple slideouts.
Here are the examples of stuff we use while camping:
RV Leveling Blocks: amzn.to/49qdRHO
Trailer Leveling blocks: amzn.to/3QLQAsC
Inexpensive but dependable Surge Protector 50Amp: amzn.to/3FOv687
Inexpensive but dependable Surge Protector 30Amp: amzn.to/3FQgXHI
water pressure regulator: amzn.to/40vsk0U
fresh water hose: amzn.to/463PzQX

What do you hate the most about campgrounds? We have four more on our list of top five and our last one will take this video out with a bang.
KOAs are notoriously expensive. Most of the time we find the most expensive KOAs near famous attractions. Location has its advantages and it’s where KOAs are the most expensive. Some KOAs sites are over $100 per night. But the hotels in the area are probably 4 times more expensive like in Orlando Florida near Disney or similar. On top of that KOAs are built with kids in mind but many charge extra for kids. The extra fee every time you try to do an activity pricing method is exhausting as you are nickel and dimed throughout your stay.
This next one is 50 years in the making and no fault of KOAs.
The KOA business originated in 1962. These campgrounds quickly spread throughout the United States. Many of the KOAs were near major cities like St Louis or Bowling Green Kentucky. The sites were outside the city when they were built. As the cities grew over the last 70 years the campgrounds were surrounded by urban sprawl. These realities are no fault of the owners. Traffic makes it difficult to get off the highway and to the campground. Many of the KOAs are near truck stops or industrial locations that are loud with activity around the campground 24 hours a day.
other people hate the exact opposite. KOAs in the middle of nowhere. Many of the KOA campgrounds were strategically built at interstate highway exits for the convenience of travelers journeying cross country. Hence why many of these are classified as KOA Journey campgrounds. These campgrounds are similar to Tri Trails KOA and Little Bear campground that used to be a KOA. You can tell by the campground office and general store. These campgrounds are key for travelers across the United States. But, many people will try to overlook these campgrounds because there is generally nothing near these journey KOAs. Tri Trails is new, and a great place to spend the night but, many are older and not in the best condition.
Many people hate how noisy KOAs can be. We had a trip back from Utah and we stopped in St Louis during the 4th of July weekend. When we pulled in we quickly knew we were in for it. Groups of people were partying throughout the campground and it was busy. All we wanted was to eat, walk the dogs, relax, and have a good night’s sleep. But instead we were met with people setting off fireworks next to our RV and other trailers near our propane tanks. There were also parties and activities outside the campground that were loud, too. We never want to camp on July 4 again. The only fault of the KOA owners is that they didn’t shut it down for the safety of the campers and their campground.
The 3 campgrounds viewed in this video were good for us. They are
Albuquerque KOA • KOA RV Park near Albuq...
Streetsboro/Cleveland KOA: • Don't Visit Cuyahoga V...
Tri Trails KOA in Ogallala Nebraska: • Ogallala Tri Trails KO...
Herkimer Diamond KOA has done a remodel and removed sites to make them wider.

All of these things are true, but we stayed at dozens of KOAs on our cross country trip and enjoyed almost all of them. Easy choice as a member, get discounts, shoulder season meant not too crowded. And a relatively good level of service at almost all of them.

I lived in my teardrop camper and spent 4 months at a KOA Holiday. I loved it. Wish I could go back.

The sites are close together but most campground are. What I have found is that most people only stay 1 or 2 nights on their way somewhere. The staff is friendly and I love the shop and the food. It’s neighbors that can make a good or horrible stay.

Most of the KOA'S are mom n pop owned campgrounds that were built back when people didn't have 45 foot rigs being pulled by 25 foot vehicles.

Like you have mentioned about the cost. Whenever you hear the name KOA, you automatically know that it was gonna cost a penny. And I will say that I haven't seen any difference between non KOA campgrounds then KOA camp grounds.

Thanks for the comment and sharing your experience. I tend to agree. But It seems like the private campgrounds not using Campspot and not on the KOA system can be cheaper. They tend to take cash or you'll need to call them to take a reservation. Is that something you have noticed?

There's nothing that makes KOAs worse than any other campground. I use them frequently and they are easier to schedule than mom-and-pop private campgrounds. Most KOAs have a wide variey of prices depending on the site, they list the most expensive ones first.

That is true. you do get the immediate sticker shock of the highest price and then have to scroll lower to see if there is a site at a good value for you. I also agree that their website is really useful. I like seeing campground maps and KOAs will always have one to understand the layout.

We always use koas when traveling but now some not all koas require a 2 night stay. Not on holiday weekends but all the time.

Some KOA's cost more than a motel depending on the area.

Koa serves a purpose on my travels. I like them for convenience at times. I know what to expect. I did stay at one for the whole summer. I did not like being so close to my neighbors. My neighbors changed almost daily. No camaraderie! However, the koa came in handy when I knew I was dealing with a dead battery on my truck. The truck required a jump twice on the trip and auto zone was very near if I needed it. Koa brought out the charger. Would you believe it took 30 minutes to charge up? So I needed the extra help at the koa I could not with a planned night of boondocking. My way of saving at koa is to get a water and electric only site. I can dump at the station as I exit.

I NEVER camp at a KOA or any campground that is this crowded. Quite frankly, if I can see you, you are too close. Give me the wilds.
