You went from don’t treat them like they’re a wild animal to treat them like they’re in the wild. I think it’s important to differentiate between a pet owner and a breeder. Can’t have one without the other. Thanks for your vid.

I've had my ball python for a little over a month, she has a relatively large enclosure with a few (not a couple) of hides with branches to climb and a water dish big enough to soak in. She has had the best shed I've ever seen, eats anything I give her and is such a chill, relaxed snake. She travels into all of her hides and enjoys time in all of them. I feel good with how happy she seems

@faithcrisis2138
@faithcrisis2138 7 месяцев назад
@@GSOReps Tbh, I got a giant Sterlite tub, a clear one. It's 110 quarts. I decked it out knowing that I will be moving her into a more permanent enclosure in about 6 months, but I wanted her to have all the space possible to move and explore. She also has UVB lighting and has almost doubled in size over the past couple months

Same. Mine has a large enclosure and multiple hides. I've never had to help her shed, not even eyecaps and she has never wasted so much as a single rat. I've even taken her to educate a scout troop about snakes. It was very stressful for her. 20 minutes back in her enclosure and she ate a rat

We recently moved our juvenile ball python into a 4x2x2. He uses every inch of that space. The idea that ball pythons don’t need or won’t use space is a silly goose idea and keeping them in tiny racks or tanks is, in my opinion, akin to keeping a human in a bathroom. Great video Adam

I want to adopt a ball python one day. I have autism and anxiety, and having a chill reptile to hang out with really helps. My previous “Support reptile” passed not too long ago, and I’m feeling that loss. I hope that sometime in the not so distant future, I can have a ball python be that comfort for me.

I have a 4 year old female ball that is very active. She has a 5' x 2 1/2' x 3' tall enclosure. As a plumber by trade I built her a "tree" out PVC pipes and she always climbing through it. Then at other times she will spend multiple days in one of her hides. Also in all the time I have had her she has never stopped eating. I believe if I let her she would eat every day. Since I live in a rural area I vary her diet with rats, small chickens and ducks. I love my Miss Daisy

I've been watching every ball python video I can ever since I took my sister's 5' ball python. She has him in a 40g tank with just a big water bowl & a hide...she got her info from outdated sources. I've been working on a 2'×2'×5' tank. I'm glad I watched Kauffman's documentary when he went to Africa to see how they live because ever since I put some branches in the tank he hasn't stopped perching up on it

I have owned 2 ball pythons in my life time, and I can tell you honestly it just depends on the snake. My first one was super active, loved to go on car rides and meet new people, and was always moving around in her enclosure. My current one is the opposite. While she is docile when I take her out, she is always stressed out and trying to hide. I have to feed her in a darker room most of the time since if she sees me she most likely won’t eat. She has a 4x2x2 enclosure with custom background, ledges, plants, 2 hides and plenty of space. She’s just very introverted. I had her in a 6’x 18”x48” before to give her more space and she hated it. She never left one side of it and never came out. So some will like a lot of space, and some won’t. It’s trial and error just like any other animal. I do agree a 4x2x2 is the smallest you should offer. They need enough room to thermal regulate, and even my shy girl uses both of her hides. I just give her a lot of cover so she feels safe. But she does use it. So seeing how she’s an odd ball with how much anxiety she has, I agree its safe to say most ball python will enjoy the “royal” treatment.

As a new ball python keeper I think understanding feeding schedules, understanding what power feeding is, how to get your animals on frozen thawed and as they reach grow when to know when you should space out feedings. That’s just my personal opinion on things new keepers should know 😊

I would like pretty much a step by step guide of baby to adult. What to expect, how often to feed, when to be concerned, what the enclosure should look like from quarantine to not quarantine and size upgrades. Also really would like a rundown of heat and light for ball pythons specifically. General reptile stuff is great but ball pythons seem to be slightly different and my plan for a 4x2x2, I originally was planning on plant lights with a panel and supplemental (in winter) heat like dhp. I know it's all dependent but Id like a summary of what seems to be a good idea (and for the type of enclosure) and what would maybe be overkill.

I love that you say it's a care GUIDE and if you don't do exactly as I say your snake won't spontaneously combust. Wild how many guides I was looking at in 2018 when I got my first ball python that spoke basically the exact opposite.

Great video!! ❤ While my first snake was a hognose, my second was a Ball Python and now I have 7 of them. They are just so awesome and friendly. One thing I would remind people is to be aware of the morphs before you get them besides the nice colors. As Spider isn’t the only morph with wobble. I have 2 BPs with the spider morph and while I adore them they just need a little bit more special care than others.
@nathanbull7790
@nathanbull7790 8 месяцев назад
Really enjoyed that video dude, over in the UK we have some really dedicated breeders, making stunning morphs, and not the old school tiny rack way. Breeders that genuinely care for all their animals. And it's good to see more people buying them. Thankfully the new age of caring breeders and stockists really vet those that are interested in buying, so they don't just end up in miserable homes.

About Light: I've actually caught my BP Finnley draping himself out to apparently bask in his lower level UV light in the late afternoons or mornings- they do need light! (Maybe not UV light but I like providing it anyway.) It's just not a strong as say a Beardie's UV light. For climbing, he's got a couple of multilevel bamboo things that are sold for use in kitchens as countertop shelving! They're cheap, easy to clean and easy to reconfigure for enrichment. Finnley likes to climb them. 10/10 do recommend. Re #1- I think I have the world's chompiest hungry boi. He hasn't ever gone off food, knock on wood. Eats like a boa. But it's good to know if he does, he'd be fine. He's a fit fella.

I had a rescue ball, and she was basically a tree python, she was always up on her branches. But when she wasn't she was in one of her caves Also something I learned was keep the same style of hide on the hot and cold side so they don't favor a cave for comfort and lack the temps they need

I watched every single ball python video on RU-vid twice before getting my boy a couple of months ago. One great tip I got from a guy in Bob bledsoe's discord server that was not mentioned in any video is to keep a piece of cork bark or a rock in there to help them scratch the skin off. Mine only shed once since I got him, and I found the whole piece inside the cork bark.

Yay Pikachu! ❤ I have 2 female ball pythons. Only time one had a food strike was because ft. She'd been FF as a hatchling and any ft now she refuses😂. The other one, she destroys her shed on purpose when shedding. She scrapes it against her rocks, geode gemstones, and crystal formation 😂. I'm always getting told it's humidity/temps, nope she just makes sure to rip it off 😂😂

I've had 4 ball pythons, all of them loved climbing. I still get the, "they don't climb" from customers at work (a reptile shop). I just acquired my first boy and he LOVES height. He's been a rack snake his whole life and he's finally in a home where he can climb. He loves his tension rods. I went to a reptile expo and when I told this breeder that they are in 120g and love to climb, he almost bit my head off. "They don't climb. They don't use all that space. You know in the wild they live in termite mounds." Like, sir. I see them do it all the time.😅 And termite mounds aren't ant hills, they're huge. Just to note, all his ball pythons had stuck shed and two were having diarrhea issues, so....yeah.

Termite mounds are also really big. The visible portion of the mound is NOT all there is. So if you want to say they only live in a termite mound then you should set up a walk-in closet sized habitrail style tube system that goes from ceiling to floor and side to side in a large closet space

Love your work Adam! You and a handful of others have really helped me out over the last few months. Like you said......there's sooo much more information now than there was in the 90s and earlier 2000s when I first kept snakes. I couldn't take them with me after HS graduation so they ended up being rehomed through a family owned pet store that I had always dealt with. 20 years later my kids are into snakes and gifted themselves a pied for fathers day and we now also have a banana. I had happy snakes before but I believe I have happier snakes now. Its not even just the info put out by yourself and others you've recommended by name, but the way you all in a way work together and praise and respect each other and offer this information out of a true love for the animals. Keep on keeping on brother, thanks!

Will admit this is spot on great info for everyone, But # 2 can't do this with my BumbleBee ball python. She climbs she falls and loves headbutting me when I hold her and always loves the warmth from my shoulders she is now 14-years old. She has servere nero head wobble from the Spider gene. Lucky for her I hatched her from a clutch and never sold her because of this, cant strike as always misses list goes on. She AKA Doris as I call her was the reason why I gave up the hobbie as I was always to worried about the new home they will go to but never judge anyone it was just me. Always at the back off my mind, do the people have the knowledge and expertise like yourself me. You are LEGEND thankyou for everything you do Xx

Pet keepers: They don't live like that in the wild. In the wild they climb trees, cruise around, and live it up. Dav Kaufman: Here I am in the wild. It turns out that Ball Pythons mostly stay hidden in dens, unless they have to leave. They'll come out to search for food/water, a mate, or to get to high ground to avoid drowning... but that's pretty much it. These Ball Python catchers have shovels, not ladders. Pet keepers: Well, yeah but... I love ya, Adam. However, you can't promote Dav's video and then claim it should be taken with a grain of salt. Either it matters how they live in the wild or it doesn't.

Anyways, I've been watching your videos and 'Green Room Pythons" videos to help me with my confidence and knowledge about ball pythons. I have one ball that climbs all over and is curious as heck! Another will literally move from one hide to the other hide and that is her weekly exercise. 😂 My balls are all super socialized outside of their enclosures and I am constantly changing up their enrichment both in and out of their enclosures. I think one thing that is super important is that no matter the size of your enclosure, your ball is gonna need enrichment! Let them explore (safely) new things.

As far as the "snakes in drawers" thing goes, it depends on the animal. There is no one size fits all solution for an entire group of reptiles. Some will not thrive in a large space while others will utilize a larger than expected area. In my case, 3 out of 4 of my ball pythons have benefited from having larger, fully furnished enclosures. However, there is the one that just never really adapted to his 4x2x15" and practically starved himself. After his body condition deteriorated to the point I was afraid he'd die, I moved him into a rack system (that I especially bought for him) and he has improved to the point that I no longer worry about him being alive every morning. My reptile experience has led me to shy away from any absolutist speach when it comes to their care. Think of them as individual people and why they are the way they are starts to make sense.

Does Dav Kaufman count? He went to Africa and saw firsthand how they live. Also talked to those who catch them for a living about their behaviors. He's got a full documentary here, on RU-vid.

Great video with condensed information. I'm hoping to get a snake within the next year and it will probably be a Ball. Something for you to think about, even if you decide not to do a video on it, I'd love to learn more about people with disabilities who keep reptiles. I'm blind myself, and currently working on figuring out all the adaptations I'll need to make to ensure both the noodle and I are having a good time. And it's really shown me how little info there is out there on this topic. As I said, I know this wouldn't really be your specialty, but if you ever find out about someone teaching on this or something, maybe a collab.

I would caution against using bright lights, especially uvb, for an albino snake. My albino darwin carpet python buries her head in her coils if there is bright light. For a long time I use a floodlight set at a lowish level on a dimming stat, in adition to a heat panel. Albino animals have very sensitive eyes.

Finally able to get My first pet snake soon! so excited I have always wanted one since I was a kid and I would just play with them outside because everyone I’ve lived with before was not chill with snakes! Someone I know told me to clean my snake after every feeding but I’ve been told on the internet to NEVER do that because it would cause regurgitation. What do you think?

Hey Adam. I adopted a 10 year old female ball python who had always lived in a 40g. I moved her to a 4x2x2 and she went on a hunger strike (always was a picky eater I had been told) I tried her back in her 40 gallon, as best decked out as I could, (plants climbing branches 2 hides etc) and she seemed happy and started eating again. Would u recommend keeping her in there or trying to upgrade again?

i had something similar i got 2 ball pythons from a buddy who didn't want them anymore they were always kept together i bought 2 terrariums and they didn't eat anything for 2 months temperature and everything was fine i put them back together and both were eating so best to try again later

Eh, that’s just what she prefers. It’s important not to anthropomorphize her. If she wants a smaller enclosure, she should have a smaller enclosure. There’s a different between what you might think she wants and what she actually wants.

@@metaknight115 ok I like this answer cause I feel like she’s happier in this enclosure but then so many care guides say it’s too small so I’m always questioning it.
