A deep dive into the Safefill product, created over 10 months. ( it feels like most of that was just the editing!!) Wether you own a safefill or are thinking of getting one this will really help you decide if the product is right for you.
I also give some handy tips to anyone who already owns a cylinder.

One thing to mention around ehu. The price of commercial electric is normally part of the camp price. With camp fees becoming really expensive , I can see the sector changing its pricing being camp only and pay electric separately. If this is the case, using more gas for the fridge & heating would be a cheaper option. So, whilst you’re right for those who don’t like to do wild camping, I can see that the Safefill could be a benefit for those who enjoy electric hookup camping aswell . Personally, I think the product is brilliant and having one for 8 years, I would strongly recommend. Also, whilst sometimes you do have hunt for gas, ( luckily not a problem for me) I would buy 2 bottles, and take advantage of buy more and be less frequent to travel. I would also go for the 10kg bottle , which is only £10 to £15 more than the 7.5 kg you bought giving an extra 5ltrs of gas capacity. Not had a problem getting into the locker, but with some vans you do have to put in on an angle .

Thanks for creating such a professional and informative video. I've used a Safefill for about 3 years now and as well as the cheaper fill costs there's also the benefit of being able to top-up a part-filled bottle and not needing to waste gas exchanging a part-filled Calor bottle. I appreciate there's ways round this though (2 bottles) and as you've said it's not for everyone, but another option. I completely agree about a Safefill holder at the LPG pumps!

I’ve had my two 7.5 kg safefill cylinders for five years now and being seasonal has saved me a fortune over that time compared to calor. Your video has really helped me to understand the workings of the safefill bottles .I’ve noticed when I connect refilled cylinder it’s hard to connect pigtail, now your video explains why this happens due to the trapped liquid,once you open valve slightly it releases pressure and pigtail screws home. I wondered why this happened and now I know. Thanks for the informant video.

I’m thinking of changing to SafeFill, for two reasons mainly: 1; Prices of exchanging gas bottles have gone through the roof over the last few years, Exchanging my 10 kg. (= 19 litres) Lite gas bottle currently costs £50.00, as opposed to £20.00 for the same size SafeFill bottle. 2: We are planning to tour around Europe in a few years from now, and LPG is much more popular and widely available anywhere in Europe, so re-filling is not a problem at all. In my opinion, worth putting up with for a few years. But the Main reason for me is that SafeFill has broken a few longstanding old traditions, and making gas bottle refillable is breaking a few barriers. Not only innovative thinking, but also providing competition for the “establishment”, I love that and admire that, and SafeFill deserves a chance to become the new norm in bottled gas.
@thebigtow
@thebigtow 3 месяца назад
Love this comment. It’s all fair points and I agree. Especially regarding the establishment. The only thing you need to research more before you commit to buy is the European aspect, there are a couple of comments on here that highlight different opinions in Europe regarding filling up availability or being allowed to refill. But I have no experience. However I am going to France this summer and intend to ask the questions at a few places to see what they say. Thanks for your comment.

Thanks for a well presented and easy to understand video. I would like to add some points (we have been using a SafeFill for 2 years now). We carry a 6kg Calor and a 7.5kg SafeFill. When the SafeFill runs out I swap to the Calor and then go off and fill the SafeFill (if there is anywhere nearby) and on return hook up the SafeFill again. The Calor acts as an emergency reserve. Why the two cylinders? As SafeFill is not always available we have the Calor in reserve. Remember you don't have to wait until it is empty, you can 'top up' if you find somewhere. So why did get a SafeFill? Three reasons. 1) In 2021 Calor 6kg were almost impossible to replace (and are still in short supply in some areas) so the SafeFill was a good alternative. 2) We tour with our caravan for months on end over the winter (used to be 6 month trips but Brexit put paid to that!) in Europe and Morocco. Yes, we use EHU when available, but in Europe and Morocco you are often on a mere 6amp supply or even less, and with voltage drop (due to high demand on site in the evenings) the fridge would often go onto gas. Also in the cold evenings we often need gas for heating. You cannot get Calor in Europe or Morocco and you cant fill a Calor cylinder (well we did find one place that would do it illegally, but you cant rely on that - and it can be dangerous), so I was always worried about running out of gas. You can buy SafeFill adapters for Europe (several are needed depending on the country). So having SafeFill means that we can tour Europe and Morocco with our caravan and get LPG whenever we need it. 3) In the UK we off-grid quite a lot (Camping and Caravanning Club Temporary Holiday Sites) so we do use quite a lot of gas. So for us SafeFill certainly makes sense. As you said in the video if you are always on EHU then probably not for you. The BIG downside is that finding somewhere to fill your cylinder is getting rather difficult. If you look at the website mentioned you will see that there appear to be PLG filling stations all over the UK. However, the majority will not let you fill a SafeFill. Also the website is not kept up to date and quite a few are no longer available. I have actually emailed the site with updates where I found LPG was no longer available. I never received any reply and the stations are still on their map! So 'phone before you set out. You can not filter the map to find where you can fill a SafeFill. We live in the Scottish Highlands north of Inverness and the only place in the whole of the Highlands you can get a SafeFill cylinder filled is the camp site a Beauly (Beauly Holiday Park). This is about 30 miles from our house. There are nearer LPG pumps at petrol stations by Dornoch and Skiach but they will not let you fill a SafeFill cylinder. I have shown them the regulations but they absolutely refuse. Even in Yorkshire (where there a many campsites) it is difficult to find a place to fill up. Anyway, having said all this, with our European travel and off-grid usage it suits us, and of course the cylinders are much lighter as you demonstrated. Thanks again for a great, well produced vide. KH

Thankyou for such a great comment. I couldn’t agree more with everything you said. You most certainly get your use out of your safefill. And it’s a great point that if you have a calor as well it’s great to put it to use as a back up. All the best.

@@thebigtow I was on the Safefill road 100%, but the limited filling stations is putting me off. What’s your thoughts on Flo Gas? Thanks
@thebigtow
@thebigtow 9 месяцев назад
Well although I haven’t tried their system I have no reason to believe that their safety systems will be any leas than safefills because the industry are clearly keen on the safe practice of filling a user owned cylinder. The only difference I can think of will be the weight differences. However their gaslight range which are composite will have a similar weights. Therefore the only difference I can see being the availability of swapping cylinders when empty and waiting for it to be empty before getting a refill.
@PhilMcKinley-qj1ro

@@thebigtow Agree. That’s the reason you need two bottles. Run one empty, switch to other. Costco are selling 10kg bottle for £55, with filling £36. Competitive !!

Fantastic video, thank you! its really made my mind up about this, and for the amount of gas we use vs the upfront cost, means this would be a pointless endeavour (1 bottle a year) . Also, there is absolutely nowhere near us to fill up, it would be a good 60 mile round trip to fill the bottle. Take care Dan

True if your only using gas for cooking. A propex gas heater will get through 1 to 2 kg of propane a night in winter so it maybe down to either always using electric hookup or spending time off grid or on a boat etc if cost is justified

Thanks for sharing; great vid, as always. I'm not personally sold on safefill. Firstly, I don't currently use enough gas and I've taken the halfway house approach of getting similar bottles, but replacements, rather than refill (gaslight). Secondly, the whole thing about refilling winds me up beyond measure. Not enough places near me. Heard stories of people being refused at some Morrisons. It'd probably take me about 27 years for them to pay off. I currently have 2 10kg gaslight bottles and I always have one full. This is mainly because I ran out of calor gas once in France, and you can't get it over there... However, I do like them, and I think they are a very good idea. I feel the same way about electric cars and Motorhomes 🙂 they just aren't any good for me...

Filling gas containers that are not installed into an Autogas pump at filling stations is not allowed on the European continent, despite the simplicity of the process. The filling station staff will interrupt the pump from behind the control desk at the paypoint, and you will be left without gas and the means to fill the cylinder unless you take precautions to hide the gas cylinder behind the car that you drove in with, and proceed to fill whilst the staff are not looking. If they find out that you have filled a cylinder that is not fixed into your vehicle, you will not be allowed back in to the filling station. I have been filling gas cylinders in all the European countries for the last twenty years, and base my views on first hand experience at the pump. Hide the cylinder from the view of the cameras, and the staff when you fill up, and be discreet when you put the filled cylinder into your vehicle, otherwise the staff will give you some grief.

Hi@@thebigtow . You are spot on. I'm lucky in having two supportive filling stations within a couple of miles or home, but if i'm filling elsewhere, I usually just leave the cylinders standing in the boot of the car and fill them there. To anyone looking, i'm filling the car not portable bottles. In more than 5 years I've never been challenged.

@thebigtow
@thebigtow 8 месяцев назад
The specific regulations around life spans of composite cylinders im not sure of. But yes steel cylinders are accepted to having a longer life. By he service Intervals are also shorter for composite cylinders. But I would argue that because you own the composite cylinder from new you know exactly what health the cylinder is in. Compared to a exchange cylinder whereby you have no idea how old that cylinder is, when it was last serviced if at all and how it’s been looked after in that lifetime. So there are arguments for and against. Thankyou for commenting it’s a good point and appreciate you watching. Rob

SAFEFILL UNCERTAINTY: I'm going to pass on the Safefill LPG route. Great idea, but when you enter into something where there is a reasonably high initial investment, you need to be certain that it will not be short lived. DUE DILIGENCE: What I’ve learnt so far... Fill up points are few and far between, our closest Morrisons Ipswich a 50 mile round trip. Best to call ahead nice lady in Morrisons filling station can tell you how much LPG they have in the tank. HOWEVER... Ask if Morrisons will be continuing to supply self fill LPG the answer is... Who knows? Not very reassuring! But the clincher for me was the impossibility of trying to find someone at Safefill HQ to talk to. Also Email sent with no reply as yet. Looks like Safefill as a company is fast becoming an endangered species. So I’m out, as I’ve decided that I don’t want to own this problem. Just as a side note: Based on our Irish road trip beware finding LPG in the ROI (Southern Ireland) Their LPG bottles are threaded externally, unlike ours internally.

Thankyou Tony. Appreciate you watching and commenting. I agree and some of there’s points are cover in the video. You also made some other good points regarding Ireland. I didn’t t know this. But it is certainly a personal choice as to whether they are right for you or not and a lot of that is based on your location as you Pointed out being local to an LPG pump you can actually use is the main one. Hope you Enjoy what’s to come. Thanks.

I feel that you left the most important reason for having one of these type of cylinders and that is EUROPE!! Most filling station there has LPG refillable points and more to the point you can not get Calor gas in the Continent so you're stuffed if you have a steel cylinder. This is not a particular concern for the caravan brigade but certainly for motorhomes. This is simply another UK rip off that big companies do not want to sell you cheap LPG and force you to go down the Calor gas route.
@thebigtow
@thebigtow 8 месяцев назад
Hey thanks for commenting. The reason I didn’t touch on europe was because I haven’t had the opportunity to experience it myself. However so many people have said this. Some have said they aren’t keen on refillable cylinders so I’ll see next year when I go to France. 🤣

Hi, they have no problem with the containers themselves but with the persons trying to fill them. ( Idiots everywhere) If you ask they will generally be quite happy to assist. There is no issue if the cylinder is built into the vehicle with an external filling point.@@thebigtow

For Europe the Gaslow cylinders are probably better.. France has decided that user fillable cylinders need to be certified to R67 (same as the huge propane tank you would have at a house without mains gas) rather than the EN standard for portable gas cylinders. Also with the Gaslow system you install a seperate fill pigtail to an external port on your caravan or motorhome, so you connect the LPG gun directly to the caravan with the cylinder staying in the gas locker when filling

@hello457947 8 месяцев назад
Thanks for this comment Daniel. This is something I wasn’t aware of. In fact all this thread has taught me something. So are we saying the gas low does comply with R67? I’m not sure I agree with Frances decision on this front but it is what it is and therefore your point is a really great point. Thankyou for sharing that. Rob.

Your video is well-made, but the (totally unnecessary) music is far too loud in relation to your voice. Don't try to spice up your videos with music while you're talking! Unfortunately, the filling up of gas cylinders by private individuals at petrol stations is strictly forbidden in many countries of the EU. It remains unclear why the regulations differ so much among countries, since the behaviour of the technical devices are the same. Physics has nothing to do with borders.

Thanks for commenting Holger. It’s been noted regarding the volume of the tracks there was an export issue that I hadn’t realised existed until after uploading. And will be rectified for future. As for the Eu I too am baffled by the fact it differs so much. And not just in the EU but even the uk with some four courts allowing and some not. Cheers.

@thebigtow
@thebigtow 6 месяцев назад
Your way is cheaper for sure. And illegal. Adapters used with steel exchange cylinders are the main reason why forecourts are stopping the use of refill cylinders. But again it’s also the weight difference. Steel cylinders are an unnecessary weight for me. So I genuinely see the benefits of outlaying that money based on the years I have left to use it. But thanks for commenting and watching. Appreciate it.
