Quite frankly, after asking Anna to cart a deadman across the castle to avoid a scandal, Mary owed Anna the world.

I love how the lines of class and wealth disappear with these two. Mary has such a sisterly love for Anna. My favorite is when she told that cop who was arresting Anna, when defending her said, "I am NOT miss...I am Lady Mary Crawley." Her care for Anna made her use her title, which she NEVER had before.

And when she went to visit Anna in prison, she signed in with her real name and title. That would have been a huge deal if it had gotten out to the papers, but her attitude was basically, "Who cares? I know you're innocent, we just have to prove it."

I really love how the whole house pulls together for Anna & John when she goes into labour. The roles are completely reversed, the master of the house brings in the champagne himself for his employees, Mary was instrumental in every step of Anna's pregnancy, including the post-birth childcare, it was such a nice reminder that they're genuine people who care deeply for their extended family.

I love that Anna knows when something is wrong and stays behind to ask Mary if she's ok. Mary can't bare to be upset in front of her mother or even her father, as she thinks they might see her as a hopeless case - which of course they don't - but that is what expectations can do to someone in her situation. On the other hand, Mary feels she can tell Anna anything, because she will not judge her nor would she tell anyone else.

OMG, I WAS WAITING FOR THIS, IT TOOK FAR TOO LONG! Like the Merlin fandom, even long after the last season/last movie is released the fandom will be very much alive! 1:42 For those of you who said Mary was always horrible to Edith for no reason, this is proof Edith was not always a silent/innocent victim. I stand by the fact that both sisters were always as bad as each other even if Edith was the middle daughter and Mary the eldest. And to me, Mary was never as snobbish to the servants as Edith was. Sure Cora and Robert did not help things but even the late Sybil and Tom could not dilute the endless drama between the two. I hope they learn to get along as they mature with age and each character's actress, Michelle and Laura were reported to have said they know their characters are bitches/not nice people so that surely says something!

Mary was a great person to staff, and she was the one person who really supported Tom in the marriage to Sybil, and the fact that he wanted to have Sybbie born Catholic. She stood up to a guest when she realized he put something in Tom’s drink and made sure it was known. Honestly with Mary she was spoiled which was a consequence of her upbringing, Edith was as well. It's overly exaggerated in DA. In real life some aristocratic ladies were close with their ladies maids but there was no equality as servants were a much lower social class than their employers. Anna would have left her job as a lady's maid when she got pregnant as it would have looked unseemly to be pregnant and working as a servant and its unlikely she would have returned to work as married women with children generally stayed at home. Servants lives were hard and not as portrayed in period dramas.

@@WitchKing-Of-Angmar life generally was alot harder back then but after the 1st world war it became difficult for aristocracy to find servants because most servants nearly a million left service to work in shops, factories and businesses when new technologies and industries were created. I don't blame them for leaving domestic service when servants were working for about 18 hours a day for very little pay and bad working conditions.

I just feel as time goes on. They will be in their 60s in the 50s and 70s and in the 1960s. These two will be friend in every way not employer and servant. It was changing during those times. They would be actually best friends like sisters doing so much together. Anna would be so easy going like usual but I think Mary would be more appreicative probably saying she rather be with Anna that certain other people like herself and it would be just fine in those days.

His character is representing the "old" world (before the 20th century). As a contrast figure if you will. But he is genuinely kind and warmhearted, so being a bit too snobbish can be forgiven. It is good to have figures with different opinions, it would be so very unrealistic and boring if everyone would have the same mindset.

Or maybe Anna is just a better person than entitled, privileged and self-victimising Edith who btw is the family member who treats her inferiors the worst (having affairs with farmers, using them to raise her kid, destroying their marriages) and was disgusted and racist about Rose's back boyfriend. Mary was the only one not playing along with Edith's poor-me attitude. Mary also had to endure Edith being jealous of her since childhood. Anna, despite being poor and hard-working, never whined about her lot in life and was always a trooper - and Mary admired her for it.
