Larry was the goat in my eyes. I grew up watching him and he took the league by storm. Sweeping mj, beating magic and dominating the league. If he hadn't blown his back out by helping his grandmother he would of played for another 5 seasons. Dude was a monster.

speaking of space and precision. i heard a story where during warmups bird said the rim wasn't 10 feet. facilities swore it was 10. they measured it and sure enough it was slightly off and bird knew without a ladder and measuring tape

He must have some superhuman type hand eye co-ordination and vision to be able to just ping the ball through that hoop in pressure situations. And being able to tell that it was short by inch or whatever it was shows his awareness of his battlefield. Absolute legend.
Bird played hurt a good portion of the time but he still went out there and embarrassed younger and more athletic players. Bird at 50% was still better than a lot of guys at 100%.

Scored 47 points on 21 of 34 with 10 of those 21 left-handed also 7 for 7 left-handed at the free-throw line. He also had14 rebounds and 11 assists. Celtic win in OT 120-119.
I'm one of the biggest Larry Bird fans on the planet. My husband and two sons took me to French Lick for my 36th birthday. We stopped at a park as soon as we got to town to let the boys get some Ya-yas out. Who shortly after walks up to them and starts playing catch? Larry's cousins. They said oh, have you seen his new house? I'm pinching myself because it was so unexpected. Later, we drove by and Larry himself was standing in his driveway. I wanted to stop but I was outnumbered and my kids and husband said no because I would probably get arrested. I'll never forget that.
In Dallas, Larry Bird jumped over the end line in the Celtics offensive zone to save the ball from going out of bounds. He looked while in mid air for someone to save it to, but could not. He was well behind the end line and took the shot having no other option. From behind the end line, over the backboard and swish!!! The Dallas crowd went nuts even though it was a very close game and it went against their team. It was an unbelievable play that I will never forget!

Yes and to have him and Magic in the SAME Era, TWO of the best play makers ever. I grew up playing hockey but between those 2, Jordan, Shaq etc by the 90s my entire family were basketball fans. Bird and the rest brought the sport to millions who prior could have cared less.

This meant that you had to be more than just a good basketball player, you had to be a physically and mentally tough human being as well. Not even close, skill gap is huge. Guys couldn't keep up with average players so they tried to beat them up instead. Look at how many people are crowding the box. You did that today the ball would simply get kicked out and you would get buried in threes.

The average player on the court today does far more than your average players of the older eras. Many couldn't even dribble or shoot with both hands, let alone create space off the dribble for getting their own shot. You're talking about an era where you could get into the league for simply being tall. Literally guys were recruited because of their height not talent. That would never happen in the modern league, it's a pure skill game.
The game bird dropped 60 against Atlanta...the bench of the Hawks going crazy after every shot. They said coach Fratello was pissed next day and in the locker room kept showing film of his own players celebrating birds shots. Funny as hell
Plus the players were also fined $5000 dollars each after showing the film over and over.... I believe they said it was 20 minutes of just the bench not the shots.
Larry Bird was amazing!! I was (and still am) a Lakers fan and the 80s was an AMAZING time for the sport. The Lakers/Celtics rivalry was so intense and amazing to watch. The Celtics were our BIGGEST RIVALRY back then. They had an INCREDIBLE team!! Bird, McHale, Ainge, Parrish . . . They were so easily hated by Lakers fans but you could ALWAYS count on an incredible game when they met. I went to about 100 Lakers games in the 80s and had the pleasure of watching them play the Celtics LIVE at The Forum probably about 8 or 12 times. It was an ABSOLUTE AWESOME time for basketball. Those were the days!!!🤘 The 80s was a time in basketball that will NEVER be seen again!! It was a HISTORIC era for the sport!! I'm so happy that I was able to go watch the Celtics play the Lakers so many times in the 80s! LEGENDARY!!!🤘
I never get tired of seeing that sequence when Bird is suited-up and trots back to the court. The crowd sees him and goes wild. Bird cooly takes a knee, and looks at the court with the predatory glare of a wolf sizing up its prey. It's a small moment, but it's epic.
It reminds me of when the Lakers and Knicks played in the 7th game, May 8th 1970, when injured Willis Reed, who wasn't expected to play, suited up and came out to play 27 minutes, winning the championship with the Knicks. It popped my balloon. I saw Russ do that, too, but I can't remember which game.
My favorite Bird story is when he had a collision with Dell Curry ( Steph's dad) in March of 88 and the elbow to Bird's eye left a swollen bump on Bird's eyeball. Bird had double vision in that eye but did not tell anyone because he wanted to keep playing and nobody suspected anything because Bird was still hitting his jumpshots! The team physician was Arnold Scheller who witnessed Bird blowing his nose and saw Bird's eyeball drop out of its socket. This is covered in the book "The Big Three" by Peter May pages 230-232. This was when Bird briefly wore the clear goggles. It took time to heal and the bump gradually went down but during that time Bird played a few more games with double vision or blurred vision in that one eye = incredible stuff!!
It also is held in by vacuum pressure of the eye socket. If you get hit with enough force it can knock it part way out and if there is swelling behind it it pushes it out fully.@@Gmen2487
I never really looked up to athletes as a kid but when I first saw Larry Bird play, I thought he was awesome. He worked so hard in practice and his confidence and leadership were inspiring. Whenever I see or hear anything about Larry Bird, I have to stop everything I’m doing. He never said much but his presence was felt on the court and by fans

As a 5'10" 62 year old , with two older brothers... growing up in Indiana.....we always ran ball...full court...hours at a time...3-4 nights a week, every week....we watched Bird from college with Magic a all the way...so many Legend stories, the players on the other bench going Krazy...but when he came back out from the broken cheek Bone...words can't explain...Bone Chilling'...so many greats, especially Michael Jordan...but...Larry Legend...' wow! GOAT...Bird. lol.....
Bird was one of a kind player. Even Jordan respects him. He played hurt many times and won playing hurt many times. True character and determination lacking in some contemporary "stars."
My favorite Bird moment: I was in attendance when Indiana State played the University of Evansville during Bird’s senior year. This was the first season after the plane crash that killed the entire Evansville team. The NCAA gave special permission for any transfers to Evansville to be eligible to play immediately. Evansville put together a pretty good team that year and played the Sycamores - who would go undefeated until that season’s NCAA national championship game - very tough. The Purple Aces started the game by double-teaming and occasionally triple-teaming Bird to prevent him from touching the ball. Due to the tough Evansville defense, Bird didn’t take his first shot until almost midway through the 1st half. When Bird finally took his first shot of the game he was about as deep in the right corner as he could be without being out of bounds. He put up a super high arching shot that made you wonder if it was ever going to come down. This game was in Evansville and the Evansville crowd was rooting for the home team while also expecting to see something special from the great in-state rival/legend Larry Bird. So, when Bird got his first look and the ball finally left his hands with that high arching shot almost 10 minutes into the game, you could hear the whole building go silent for a second. Then, the ball fell seemingly out of the sky and through the net for the first of Bird’s 29 points on the night. Indiana State won the game 84-80. When remembering the most memorable moments from an NBA legend, it’s not common to mention a regular season college game. But’s it’s still very memorable if you were there.
I enjoyed reading your comment. I remember the Plane Crash which is still heartbreaking. Also I always loved Birds Rainbow shots. Parrish was a fantastic Rainbow Shooter. 7ft tall and shooting those high arches no way was his shots going to be blocked.

Many of them even claim he would be a scrub in today’s league which is laughable given that he routinely schooled some of the best athletes in the NBA of his day. All of whom could play at the athletic level of the current woke basketball association. Clyde Drexler, Jerome Kersey, Kenny Walker, James Worthy, Scottie Pippen to name a scant few.

When Bird had the sixty point game it was mostly due to his teammates, including McHale, encouraging him and feeding him the ball. Kevin has stated several times that he and the entire team wanted to make sure Larry got the record back. I lived in Boston and practically grew up at the old Boston Garden watching the Big Three, Bird McHale, Parish. Great years.

Larry was just plain and simple! He spoke whatever was on his mind. He didn't care what people thought and that's what makes him so real. I absolutely hated him during the Boston years, but now have come to love the guy! Just a humble guy, unless he was on the Basketball Court, then he transformed into a beast!!!
This shows that there are many players who sometimes end a game with 50 or more points, but bird in theory could have gone for 60 points every single game. He played more for the team instead, but sometimes we forget how unbelievably strong he was in scoring tons of baskets..

One of the best Larry Bird stories took place during a road game against the Seatle Supersonics in 1986. Larry tells Xavier McDaniel that he is going to get the ball and shoot a game winning jump shot in his face. Xavier says he'll be waiting. True enough, Bird gets the ball, and shoots the game winning jumper right in his face! LB said after that shot that he didn't mean to leave 2 seconds on the clock! Classic Larry Bird all the way!!
2:54 and in one of Basketball's great ironies, Larry starts COACHING the Pacers a few years later - and coaches them into their only NBA Finals appearance (to date) in 2000.

Bird was partly responsible for making MJ who is turned out to be. I would say MJ became the better player mostly because of his speed, but overall in a stat-for-stat comparison Jordan is better in nearly everything except assists and rebounds.

As a teenager watching him play I never knew the nitty gritty details of the relationships he had with the players. I enjoyed all of these stories and especially the one where his ex-college bully teammate came to Boston and got so humiliated he melted down and got ejected. Bird was a badass to mess with and sure proved it on the court. My favorite memory was when he stole the inbound pass dishing it to DJ for the winning layup. I saw that game live on TV and it was very exciting to see.

My first game with Bird and I was addicted. I sat with my jaw dropped the whole game. While most players didn't study the pass he made it into an awesome art form. When my jaw came off the floor from his passing it dropped again again when he trash talked. Thank you Bird for years of memorable entertainment.
The 80's basketball was way greater than the dull NBA today.. We actually had competitive teams and no super teams with 3 or 4 allstars.. I wish I could go back...

I remember as a 5th grader watching that game 5 playoff game against the Pacers. Pacers were on the way to winning that game before Bird came back and took a flame thrower to them.
I like that Larry Bird and Magic Johnson were bitter rivals that became friends. Opponents in college, opponents in the pros but a shoe commercial sparked their friendship. THAT is my favorite story.
Back when earned baskets, they didnt call fouls for nothing that was awesome to watch, last full game I watched was Detroit beating Lakers for championship. Now I just check out highlights here or there.
My favorite Larry Bird moment... I grew up in Terre Haute, IN. and went to West Vigo High School in West Terre Haute. Larry Bird did his student teaching and was an assistant baseball coach at my school during his senior year at ISU. My absolute favorite Larry Bird moment was walking on top of the bleacher seat so that I could get a glimpse of Larry walking the halls of the high school surrounded by the students. He was a super star in that town. That's a pretty cool memory for me. Of course, the entire city were huge fans of Larry and the ISU team for the 2 years that they were relevant back then. To witness the team going into the NCAA championship game undefeated was great. Watching Larry cry at the end of the game when Magics Michigan State team beat them was heartbreaking. Then to watch Boston beat LA in the second season of Larry vs. Magic was also great. I'm certain that every generation has a sporting hero that ignited a re-birth of a league or organization. To be able to watch Larry and Magic bring the NBA back to the forefront was great for me. I'm sure that there would have been someone else who would have done it eventually, but those two players absolutely did it.
8:05 Bird was VERY well known for his extreme court smarts - and in this case, OF COURSE he fed the man with the hot hand! No ball hog was Larry Legend. 8:32 Then Larry got HIS share a few nights later, breaking McHale's franchise scoring record with 60 himself.
You missed one of the best stories from earlier in the playoffs with the pacers. The game was tight and bird had been jawing all night when he looked at the defender guarding him and his coach pointed to a spot on the floor and said "I'm going to hit the game winner right here" then preceeded to do just that. Bird was a savage on the court.
Underrated? They don't put mediocre players in the Hall of Fame. McHale (you could at least spell his name right) wasn't underrated. Just overshadowed by Bird.
I loved that Pacers series. Something else that rarely gets shown/mentioned when this heated rivary is discussed. Birds terrible back was well known and I can't say for sure it was this last game or a game before but Person put came down the court and turned his back to get position and Person put both his forearms together and gave him a huge forearm shiver right accross the lower back, with so much force it sent him to the ground. Dude was so low that he actually tried to cripple him out of the game. Historic/one of the ages comeback though.
