another thing some builders don't mention is, Don't use any time based effects .... you don't need pedals like that. get / use plugins in your DAW environment, and let your venue's natural ambiance be your reverb....( some people would argue that.. i of course understand, but i don't )

For about 20 years now I’ve used old cassette tapes ( in their cases) and then wrapped with electrical tape …then I put Velcro on the top/bottom to attach it to the board… works quite well as a riser… it’s just enough space to clear jacks and make room. 🤣

After the first rehearsal with my new band a few weeks ago, I decided to switch my big homeboard to a Pedaltrain Nano+. It was too heavy(over 12 pounds/6kg!), too big and too many pedals I didn’t need. For my band I only use a tuner, a distortion and OD, a fuzz and a reverb/delay. My tip is to start with the smallest board you can get away with. Secondly, decide the minimum of pedals you really need and USE. Thirdly, get pedals that can do multiple things. For me, I use reverb and sometimes delay, so instead of using seperate pedals I use the Boss RV-6 which can do reverb+delay. It made me really understand how to use these effects once I was limited. With the Nano+ I use a Cioks DC5 so I have 5 outputs for 5 pedals or 6 pedals if I daisy chain two pedals. I have 3 drive pedals, a TS Mini, a Mooer Black Secret and an EQD Cloven Hoof. The first two are daisy chained as they only draw 10-20mA. The output that remains free is my wildcard slot. Sometimes I add a POG2 (yes it fits although sideways) or a chorus or even an additional drive pedal. My tuner is a Polytune Mini. Although I hate mini pedals because of my shoe size, it‘s the best way to go to save space and weight. The best thing is, I can just grab my board (it weighs just 2.5kg) and my guitar and take public transport to our rehearsal space AND I still have every pedal I really need for my sound/band. I don‘t regret my decision of downsizing at all.

I heard it said from the key team in my worship team at church is that the PTJr is the perfect size for what we do if we pick our battles right. Buffer, comp, preamp, 3 drive stages, mod, delay, reverb and a Morningstar MC6 to control everything in wet land. All of this out to a Kemper and we have pretty much, in my opinion, the ideal church rig setup. All that’s left is to make space for altoids. (Iykyk)

My board is an odd bunch. A PT junior-sized board with 11 topside and 2 underside (including a One Spot Pro CS7) Topside, a DVP 3XL (because I like having a larger sized volume pedal) on the right side Next to it going down is an upright Mooer Yellow Comp, sideways Keeley Super Phat Mod, and an upright Sub n Up Top and bottom in the middle are the Strymon Iridium and the Pettydrive, joined by the Polytune noir and a riser mounted Wampler Tumnus for Klon boosted fun. All upright. To the left is from bottom to top, a Nova Delay, Specular Tempus, and a sideways Zoom multistomp. On the underside is a mounted CS7 and a Bonafide Buffer undermounted at the input. Slowly converting my patch cables to EBS Golds compared to the standard pancakes I've used all the while. The Zoom multistomp is for those fun effects I don't use as often and frees me up from missing the Strymon Timeline Ice setting, a Rat, a Julia, and straight-up distortion. Everything else is fair game for what I do. Lead is a Mogami silent plug and out to a passive DI.

I mount a power supply AND an innerface module under the board. I take the screws out of the module and use the enclosure cover plate as a template to drill holes through the board. Then I mount the module underneath with thick dual lock and use longer screws that go from top of board, through the enclosure covers screw holes, into the threads on the enclosure box. Often times pedalboards have a lip on the edge, in this case I use spacers between the enclosure and the underside of the board.

I discovered the Polytune 3 with the built-in buffer a ways back and it's been at the front of my signal chain ever since. At the end of the chain, I use the buffer in my Eventide H9, which has an output impedance of 470 ohms. Works great. I have pristine signal even with six or more true bypass pedals in the chain.

I'm all for top jacks but the issue I find is sometimes they make the pedals to close together and you might press a pedal you don't want to turn On or OFF. I think the best way to maximize your smaller board is to give up having the same thing over and over. Multi effects pedals like programmable ones like the Boss 500 line is a really good way to have more pedals with less space.

Those Square pancake plugs look amazing! I’m determined to keep my pedal board small! Two for One pedals can also help? I’m a Fuzz kind of guy, so I end up with my Buffered Tuner Late in my chain. Getting everything on there, tidy, not too close, and functional is always a challenge? Still figuring out my Gain/Fuzz situation. So the right side of my board isn’t locked down yet! Saw an interesting demo where a player was stacking Overdrive into various Fuzz pedals...I’m intrigued? Right now I’m going the other way around. Have you ever thought about a “hinged bridge riser” with a slight angle (85*), instead of being so square? Pedals should be duel-locked down, and the slight angle would make it easier to tap the upper row and still clear the lower bout?

Another way of achieving a smaller pedalboard is by using The pedals which may do more than one effects or have presets (like in Overdrives )... The example would be Hx Stomp - we can run delay, modulation and reverb in one pedal or Chase Bliss Benson preamp or other overdrive pedals wich has preset or dual Overdrives , so that we do not have to have multiple Overdrives to get the sound. It's just my thinking.

Hi Doc You've been so helpful on this build I'm still working on .I'm wondering if I could once again get some advice? I think I've figured out by way of your elimination i.e. move power supply ,turn off buffer ,check each pedal. That the problem is in the jack of one of the inputs of my Walrus Phoenix .Is this something that can cause my amp to short circuit ,and fry pedals ( Malekko 616 dead ,and Taurus Dexter : ( Thank God I don't think it hurt my Keeley eccos when it shorted it out ,cuz it works fine on it's own adapter still in the chain. Would love any advise or thoughts . Thanks from a very sick board .
@VertexEffectsInc
@VertexEffectsInc 3 года назад
The power supply has outputs (not inputs) but are you certain the polarity is right? Is the voltage at 9V? You can try measuring it to ensure that it's putting out 9V with a multimeter.

If my pedalboard starts with buffer in Polytune 3 mini, do I still should turn Buffer in Strymon Timeline which is last in my signal chain or it's better to put it in true bypass mode since the signal already has the right impedence? Between them there is Friedman IRX so a cab sim and maybe MS3 will also be added

One weird trick Ive found is that if something is going to be an always-on pedal, you may be able mount it underneath the pedalboard. I've done this with a Keeley compressor and a Boss Noise Suppressor on a Pedaltrain. Also one of the best ways to save space is to simply decide whether or not a pedal reeeeeally needs to be on your board. Like sometimes I want bucket brigade delay, sometimes I want tape delay. Could just get a digital pedal that does both OR, just pick one and deal with it. I also got a Strymon Sunset so that I don't have to have 4 drive pedals on my board. All the flavors are in a smaller footprint.

my solution for saving space is not to have many pedals on the pedalboard it may sounds funny but its true . now you only need few pedals perfect ex Jimmy Hendrix and I'm not going into that .. the main reason is to "play music" and to enjoy it . I would suggest you ask an expert like Mason to build you a professional pedalboard and be done with it , u only pay once and save tons of money and headaches unless u take time to know exactly what you really want and stick with it . knowing there is no such thing as a perfect sound also what kind of music u play will give u an approach ... thank you Kindly for sharing .
@VertexEffectsInc
@VertexEffectsInc 3 года назад

Hmmm.. I'm a little confused. I watched a video where you talked about the essential reasons of getting a pedal which was dedicated to buffering the signal and not use pedals which are not build to buffer the signal. But in this video you are saying that the Strymon Big Sky - I suppose also Timeline and maybe the Blue Sky (I have these) are fine buffers? I also have the Daddario tuner - or would I need to get the TC electronic poly tuner to do the job? I have ordered 2 buffer pedals recently now, but are they really needed then?
@VertexEffectsInc
@VertexEffectsInc 2 года назад
Having dedicated buffers is ideal in most cases, however for some they might have pedals that can achieve this internally. We have a video titled something like "Pedals With Great Built In Buffers" that has a list of all pedals that have our approved buffer specs, including the Strymon devices. Remember however these pedals need to be first and last to get the benefits of having an input and output buffer.
@joshgreen4521
@joshgreen4521 2 года назад
I have read up on it. It seems to be the case that the Blue Sky has the input and output buffer quality as you specified. (y) I will use one of my ordered buffers in the start of my signal chain before my tuner which does not have buffer quality. There is 6 pedals in between the buffer and the Timeline. Will it be too much buffering with the Timeline right before the Blue Sky and the buffer in the beginning of the signal chain?

@@joshgreen4521 I would bypass the buffer in your Strymon device that is not the last pedal in the chain. So if your signal path ends with the Timeline, Blue Sky, Amp - bypass the buffer in the Timeline, but keep it active on the Blue Sky.
