Hello Nate Savage. I just got my guitar a few days ago and your videos are helping me to learn guitar. My neighbor gave me the guitar and suggested that i visit your youtube videos to learn how to play. So far they are helping me. Thanks.
+Rafah Al-Shohaty Have you had your guitar set up by a professional, so that it's as easy to play as possible? That could be something that's holding you back. Other than that, you can just keep applying the tips in this video, and you should see some progress. :)
I’ve been playing for a little less than a year and have advanced nicely but barre chords remain a bit of an obstacle for me. This video has been a real help as I now see that I’ve been overextended my wrist, flaring my elbow, and positioning my first finger incorrectly with respect to the fret. Thank you.
Thanks! I am just a few months into learning and so far have been learning all open chords. This lesson really helped me form some good sounding bar chords, so now I am hooked and really eager to practice them.
Nate, You Rock! I never had trouble with barre chords in my youth, but arthritic fingers and fibrotic deposits on the palmar side tendons of the fingers have left quite a gap, so I had been tilting my finger to get that barre. You're the first person I have ever heard suggest that there could be that gap in the crease (even without arthritis) so I was pleased to hear you cover that. No problem on major chords, but major and (A-type) minor 7th and occasionally (E-type) minor barres leave a gap that I feel I have to live with. Funny that I don't have the problem on my Alvarez parlor guitar, but my other acoustic and even most electrics, I do. Your thoroughness is greatly appreciated. I love your Guitar System course, but these free lessons always shine a great light. Good Job. You are a born teacher. Stay Well.
Been enjoying this playlist. Your tips have been helpful to me and are helping me to get bar chords for the first time in my life. I have short fingers and small hands so your tips are much appreciated. Thank you.
Great stuff, Nate. I just discovered your series today and I'm hooked. Your teaching style is very good. I'm a very late bloomer (60 yrs) and your lessons and tips have already improved my learning greatly. I'll be looking at all lessons in the future. Thanks!
I found your tips VERY helpful, especially the one about the wrist position. That really made a difference for the sound of MY barré chords! Thank you so much :-).
thankyou this really helps I was having trouble playing a rhythm where you alternate between the barring fingers and the other fingers. Now I can do it:)
Thanks for this video Nate. You have overcome the double-jointed thumb that I feel has been holding me back on playing better. It is hard to fret chords when only using 1/2 of the thumb.
So very useful! I've always been "almost there" with my bar chords but I figured out what I was doing wrong thanks to this video, before this video even played through 100%. Thanks for posting. :)
I have been in that "almost" stage for the past year. I just don't believe I have the strength in my fingers, I have been building "strength" and although the they sound better it is still lacking. What have you been doing wrong?
i've went through your series trying to improve my skills almost everyday now and everything is working out pretty well except for the bar.. i can't seem to get my cords sound smooth when i try out the bar with my finger
I wanted to ask if you can do a video of do u know when you put your pointing finger on all the strings how do you make your finger strong to put all your finger on it and make it sound good cuz mine doesnt sound good. PLZ HELP.
Hi Nate, with all these comments i see i really have to say i'm not the only one satisfied so i actually thought about how accomplished you might feel, but that's another story, i gotta say that i've been practicing a lot on my fi gers lately, i've got my guitar for about 3 weeks or a month, i'm a ckean rookie and i kinda don't have money, school is here, my country is kinda financially screwed and all that stuff so i don't have any good AND cheap options which was the main downer and something that kept me and my parents away from buying a guitar which i always wanted to play, but now when i got the chance i must share the appretiation i have for you and i kinda am struggling with some words since i'm learning to play guitar (acoustic, i got a beautiful one and am so in love with it) on my own, well i watch your videos and sone relatives know a thing or two but ypu know what i mean, i never get bored, rainy and stormy days like this one pass me by, especially with the no electricity day yesterday, had me all day hardening my fingers and i just have to say i can't thank you enough for helping all of us out here and i know i'm young and don't know much but i really wanna learn all these songs and start playing something so bad but i'm at least trying to keep my cool and not rush it, Nate you're the man :)
I usually have trouble with keeping the high earring sounding clear, especially with an A shape because I have trouble with keeping my second finger from touching it
I’ve been doing all this for a while now but still can’t get the notes clear 😢 especially when changing chords. Great lesson btw I’ve learned a lot from your channel
I am trying classical music on very old guitar with high action. My bar chords sound shit. Do you think I should invest in a better guitar? I never see any improvement. Nuff dud notes
I watched many of your videos and you do a great job at helping me improve. These tips are wonderful, however I don't know where I can apply these tips specifically. I was wondering if you can recommend to learn any songs that incorporate what you teach? Specifically this lesson? Thanks!
Very helpful, But the bottom line is to practice them everyday.. I can't keep my fingers vertical for some reason.. I JUST started getting all the strings to ring out....MOST of the time..lol I still have a looong way to go before I'll be able to use them and switch between barre and open chords. But that's why it's a journey. I enjoy getting those AHAA moments.
hey nate.. when i barre the strings and play them individually, the 1st two and last two strings are heard clearly but my G and D strings sound muted no matter how hard i press my finger.... hope you can help me out.. thanks :)
Thank you 😭😭 I'm learning Bar Chords by myself and I was straining my wrist because I wasn't applying enough pressure but it was because I wasn't putting my finger right behind the fret I would put my finger in the middle of the fret lol🙈🤣 #dummy
in the video you said that my thumb should be not to high on the back of the neck of the guitar and not too low. i can only seem to get a good sounding chord when my thumb is really low, but after a while it my hand begins to hurt. should i practice getting used to a different thumb placement or is it supposed to hurt after a while?
I have small hands and I can’t keep my calluses because of how much time I spend around water, they just go right away. I’ve tried to play for 3 yrs now and not even these tips helped. I don’t wanna give up but also it seems impossible
hello guitarlessons . the tutorial was great. i have a taylor 140e acoustic i love it but for trying barr chords its rather difficult, so i was wondering if i get it set up to where its easier to play will that affect the sound much ?
GuitarLessons.com thanks for your response dude. I will just keep building up my hand strength i never felt comfortable about getting guitar changed. Thanks again.
jeff doh when you play chords, placing fingers closest to the metal fret without compromising sound makes it easier as well because the fret is where the string needs contact, so closer your fingers are to that metal fret, the less energy is required.
hey nate your videos were very helpful for me as a begginner but i have a classic guitar and the chords ar way higher and i can't do the bar chords very well coz it hurts !! can U give me some advices ? BTW thank U for all teacher ^^
+Smeexx Youness I'd recommend taking your guitar to a professional and have it set up. They can lower the strings so that it's as easy to play as possible. :)
Hey Nate! I just completed all this series of videos in a sitting and I've managed to follow so far thanks to your wonderful classes. I've just one problem though, When I'm playing bar chords my B string makes that hollow sound as if I weren't pushing it all the way down, but I've tried different combinations of finger placement and I can't get it to make a proper sound. Do you have any suggestions for me? Thanks in advance!
JustHowToSayIt First off, try pulling your elbow closer into your body. This can put your hand in a better position to reach the notes. You might also want to try using the classical method for holding the guitar with a footstool, or standing/sitting with a strap. This will bring the guitar up higher and put it in a better position for reaching the notes also. :)
so what I dont understand is, if I bring my elbow down to my body and I try to make that barre, my wrist has more of a tendency to become bent. also, when I play barre chords up at the 10-13 frets, my wrist must bend more dramatically to make that shape. any tips? Im mostly struggling with keeping a straight wrist to avoid that pain.
