It wasn't easy getting here but there were some pivotal moments that allowed my wife (Yen) and I to reach financial freedom and be able to retire at a young age. In this video I share with you my 5 key strategies that helped me retire young in hopes it can help you retire early too.
Yen and I have been together since 2005. As we worked day in day out, saving our money, investing our money, planning, strategizing and slaving away to hit our goals, the thing that kept us going over all those years of relentless hard work was knowing that it would eventually lead us to early financial freedom.
Gaining financial independence then eventually reaching financial freedom in order to be able to retire young is something that we're proud to have achieved. We want to share with others how to retire young too so it's not just a 'myth' or dream, and for you to know that early retirement is an actual achievable goal by sharing with you some practical advice and my personal perspective.
How to retire young depends on your lifestyle and choices but the most important thing to an early retirement is being able to make enough income to support your particular lifestyle which is different for every single person. By age 33 we were able to achieve our goal of early retirement for ourselves and have been able to live our lives with the freedom to travel the world at our leisure.

I wanted to share with those who are interested my own 5 key tips that helped us get here. This video about how to retire young was created to feature tips that anyone can employ in their day to day lives in order to reach financial freedom.

Nice one Peter! I’d say a lot of people are interested in how you’re doing this. Hard to sum up in a 10 minute video but you did well. We had similar goals and were on track to retire early too, but when we had kids Elisa stopped working to look after the kids. So back to one income and a few investments. Anyway, all good. Just finding a different way to do what love which is travel too. Just have to work a little in between trips.

Great informative video! Peter, based on what you and Yen did to retire early, you get an A+ for math! I’m very impressed with the two of you in achieving your early retirement goals! IMHO, you two are way to the right of the Bell curve in achieving your retirement goal! For me, I recently retired (old fashioned way). Both my wife and I are enjoying the freedom from our jobs (she retired 5 years ago). We used to plan our major trips 9-12 months out to fit work and family schedules. Now, it is really fun to plan and take last minute trips! We realize that we have a limited number of years for “active” traveling so more trips! I really like Peter’s concept of “finesse!” I need to apply this principle more often as too many of my purchases are based on emotions. I am going to watch this video again with my wife as it is very informative. I would like to see more “educational” videos from you two! Got to keep my brain active also! Thank you for taking the time to share what you two did to retire early!

To be able to enjoy so much freedom in our younger years is something yen n I are incredibly thankful for. Last minute trips sound amazing hope you and your wife really enjoy your time together. Hi Peter and Yen, ran into your channel sort of late last night, ended up watching it till 2+am. Initially I am only here to learn about starting a youtube channel, but your content caught my eyes. Unfortunately, I have realized all these late at the age of 29, so we have been working on it for about three years now, luckily I progressed much faster than I thought I would (I think), so given another 10-15 years me and my wife should be able to reach wherever you guys are right now, which I think is good enough for us.

Great advice Peter, some of the advice I'm sure we all already know, but it's always nice to hear it from someone else and seeing this has made a difference in your life is always pleasing to hear. But having put so much work into finally getting here I wanted to share my experiences so that hopefully it could help someone else reach their dreams too. A lot of it in the end of the day is common sense but the trick is to practice that common sense every day and every moment especially during the times of weakness when the fancy jacket or senseless material item flashes itself in front of you 😁👍

Really loved this video Peter! Alli and I are also living financially free; we have real estate investments as well (Sold a property yesterday actually), as well as stock market investments and our 3 businesses; We could just relax, but we work hard everyday towards a bigger goal, so it's incredible when I see other people not following the mold of what society conditions you to do, but who set bigger goals and actually make them happen, so a huge congrats to you and Yen! It's really cool to hear your story; The thing that changed everything for me was reading Rich Dad Poor Dad, I'm so grateful I decided to jump in and learn. :)

I read rich dad poor dad when I was about 17 years old but I've always wanted to break the mould of what society says I should be cause it caused me so much unhappiness. I know it is not very logical, but that is what I like. My retirement plan is also planned and not very difficult to achieve: I want to find a small house (very small!) in an isolated beach, with no tourists around and live there with not much contact with the World around.

At age 11 I was waking up 6am to get low tide and get shellfish, then sell at the local market. Also picked snails after it rained and sold them too. I've always had this approach :-) I enjoy investing and learning every day. We're on the path to FIRE and travel is much more important than materialism for us. Thank you for the video.

Like Peter, my dad wanted me to be an electrical engineer, since he was an engineer himself. I, too, also suck at math & physics, like Peter. So i went to Penn State for 1 yr, drop out, join the air force. Never thought about financial freedom until i was around 35. So now, I'm doing the grind at 50. C'est la vie...

"What makes you happy" and "Don't care about what others say" is definitely something we had to practice thinking when we started this lifestyle too. My answer was similar to yours. I always wanted to travel. I studied and became a nurse, but I definitely wasn't cut out for that lifestyle. This decision obviously comes with judgement sometimes, but not caring about what others say and changing my mindset led me to this. I wish I had seen this video while I was in high school!! This video is going to inspire so many people! Great job Peter 😀👌

Loved this one guys. Very inspiring and hope more people can pursue a life like this. Don’t work for money, let money work for you” and I’m trying to follow my passion n do what I love instead of being confined in a cubicle. Achieving financial freedom from 1 million to 10 million is probably not difficult by investing. But making 1 million from zero is difficult for me. How did you and Yen get to accumulate that ‘first pot of gold’ to invest in property n stock market? Thank you so much! You n Yen defo make a perfect couple! (Btw as a Chinese I defo can relate to what you say about your parents wanting you to learn maths well n become an engineer 😆)

Hi Tong Tong thank you for the message and I'm glad you can relate to our situation 😊 the first and greatest pot of gold was finding my soul mate yen from a young age. The next pot of gold was created through long hours hard work and saving every penny until we could afford to buy a property which was our third pot of gold. We did not do any get rich quick schemes opting for slow and steady. But slow and steady works 😊👍 along the way luck certainly helped as the assets we did eventually buy were able to get a capital gain which brought us to where we are now. But owning your first home outright is the key I think to financial freedom. Cause no matter what happens to the economy you can always rest assured you have a house to stay in.

With the giant housing bubble n sky-high price to rent ratio here in China, I actually wanna sell it n get the capital gain to invest in index funds. But my parents are really traditional Chinese parents, they made it clear that they’ll never agree to sell the apartment. I guess I’ll just have to earn money through slow n steady work first. Meaning the portfolio you both draft, to have certain amount to sustain your retirement life, is it sufficient if you have kids? Or the whole portfolio need to be adjusted if someone planning to have kids.

If you were budgeting then you really have to decide if you're having kids or not. Each child costs around about $500,000 considering you pay for their university fees too. Yen n i have always known we weren't going to have kids though 🙂

Not much for us as we didn't have a mortgage. But for those with large leveraged positions or planning to enter such positions I think it'll have a large impact on them.

Good afternoon , i live in south of France as a single man without family , i'm minimalist in order to be on retirement as soon as possible , i like watching international videos like thoses and sharing my experience : in december 2022 , i will be 40 years old and have closed the reimbursement of my simple apartment purchased in january 2014 , thanks to my savings on transport-food-accomodation , 12 years money earn back , i don't care about many things like buying new clothes , going on fast food , having subscriptions channels and i'm going to leave my car because of inflation and use my bike to go working Next year , i will invest in real estates to get more money for retirement and protect from inflation , a new challenge , i wish you the best in your goals and i tell you in french " bonne journee" 😉

Peter and Yen, yes $1 was a lot of money back then especially when my parents earn about $8 an hour at their factory jobs in the mid 80s. 5c candies at the local diary was another treat!!! i remember i tripped and broke my left arm at the age of 7 or 8 when i was so excited to bring my pie from the tuckshop back to my classroom to eat it. funny enough i never got to eat that pie that day😂😂😂

I think you can invest in any market provided you follow the principle of knowledge is power. It's important to find an area where you enjoy and read and learn as much as you can before making your first move. Good luck mate if you're thinking about all this at 23 you're already on the right path 👍
