Much better than all those cost of living videos. I can live in Vietnam comfortably on less than $1000 a month. I love the local street food and rarely eat western cuisine when there. Some people prefer to stick to a western diet and pay more as a consequence. It's an individual choice. Just because I can get by cheaply doesn't mean someone else can. It's all about your own priorities. I'm just happy to be in such an exotic and vibrant place that's safer than home in Oz. I don't seek the hi end life even though I could afford to indulge more.
@PeterandYen

Personal finance knowledge is so important, I would say a necessary life skill. The only problem we have is the currency :( In MYR, we need to earn 4x more (compared to USD), so it's almost impossible for people earning an average wage to retire early in Malaysia. I totally agree with your all points there no matter which country we're all living in! Probably except traveling to a cheaper country for us, especially when the country I live in is the "cheaper country". But love your advises Peter!!
@LifetimeTravelmates
@LifetimeTravelmates 4 года назад
We always think about that. It's so unfair. After quitting and having the travel life we have, no way we are going back to Europe or even Seoul! That would kill our finances! Our dream of travelling the world one country at a time changed more into "stay and enjoy cheaper countries", because stepping into AUS or USA would totally break our plans!
@PeterandYen
@PeterandYen 4 года назад
Yo guys totally understand your struggle. It is much harder doing this from Malaysia for exactly this reason. I believe if I was in that situation I would focus on how to earn money in global dollar sense even though I was in Malaysia. I.e gain a skill that had a globally competitive salary or alternatively most likely purchase things that are common place in Malaysia and sell for a higher margin to those who want it from other countries. Or capitalise on markets that aren't discounted I.e tourism. Unfortunately I can't fully put myself in your shoes but I do believe every country has something that just needs to be tapped into.

With all the money printing going on by central banks around the world now it'll be difficult to maintain that 4% when the purchasing power of your savings is being devalued by the minute. Did your folks ever pass on the value of keeping some savings in gold bullion to maintain purchasing power? This is still very much a thing in Asia that has been virtually forgotten by most in the west (despite early NZ settlers, including many Chinese immigrants seeking their fortunes in Central Otago gold fields). Fun fact (or not so fun..) the NZD has devalued 60% against gold in only 5 years. That averages 12% per year. Assuming you had worked 240 days per year over those 5 years that's about 28 working days per year of work effort gone with monetary inflation. And it's only gonna get worse. Gold: get some!
@bengmelea8646
@bengmelea8646 4 года назад
Caveat: my comment above applies to savings and storing and maintaining value once you have it. All your comments about passive income and the importance of cash flow are spot on. The only thing to be mindful of is say a stock market that is rising but the currency value that these stocks are priced in is depreciating. One only needs to look at the stock markets Venezuela or Argentina to see how stocks appreciated in the local currency while the country was going through a hyperinflationary event making their paper currency worthless and those stocks too if you chose to cash out.
@PeterandYen
@PeterandYen 4 года назад
Hi Pete, I think you and I must see very eye to eye on the general way this economy is going. It's actually me that got my parents and yen's parents into holding on some gold. In times of great printing by our world governments it's the only thing that will truly keep its purchasing power. I've always believed in keeping at least 5% of your portfolio in precious metals and up to 10% in current conditions.

Hi Peter and Yen, So the key is to come up with a magic number let say $750,000 and work towards saving $750,000. Then invest in an asset that generates 4% income, if the desired number is to live off $30,000 a year. Question: how much % should you save from pay cheque? I only make $65k (gross salary p.a.) in Auckland, should I try and save 40% of that?
@PeterandYen
@PeterandYen 4 года назад
Hi Danny, yes you totally got it. Just need to also note that 30,000 will be taxed in New Zealand so you'll need to account for that too. I was going to make a very detailed video about savings in the future but in the meantime here's the content 😁 I find what worked for us is putting aside $400 every fortnight as your fun money which needs to pay for eating out, clothes, movies etc. The rest of your money gets saved and pays bills mortgage or rent etc. If you manage to keep this even as your wages increase your rate of saving will go faster and faster.
@PeterandYen
@PeterandYen 4 года назад
Also yen n I saved 70% of both our salaries at a minimum and as our salaries grew we increased that percentage. Had to sacrifice a lotta stuff at the start but it was worth it.

It was a great calculation and you are lucky to have earned this position now. And rightly said by traveling you actually save more specially in most of the South Asian countries, because you earn in dollars. But think of those who earn in kyat, INR, vnd and the like. Yep, we're very happy without children. Having kids is not for everyone. It's a really personal choice and not part of everyone's life journey. People who do want kids can still achieve financial freedom though. The same concepts still apply although realistically it would take some/most people longer to reach their goal. We know couples who have though who do have kids 👍 For us personally however, neither of us ever wanted kids. We love that we have each other but also time and freedom to enjoy living life the way we want. Time is so precious. We're happy and grateful to be able to spend it together as well as with our family and friends too. We love traveling and seeing new places, experiencing other cultures, eating their cuisines, soaking in beautiful nature etc 🙂 Don't find it boring at all. One day (if we're lucky to reach old age since no day is guaranteed) we may not be able to travel quite so easily so we're glad to be able to while we're still healthy and young enough to.
