As a fan of Pathfinder 1st Edition, I have to admit that it isn't what many new gamers are going to be looking for. Which is why my next system to run will be PF2. One thing that should be shouted from the rooftops about both systems is the amount of free content. All of the mechanics from every source book published by Paizo is online for free. That is a train I am happy to ride.

I own pathfinder 2e, starfinder, and monster of the week. I want to try all of them, but mostly monster of the week and then pathfinder. Monster of the week is so different from d&d that I want to see what happens when my friends and I try something that different. If we hate it being so narrative that too much tactics are missing, we know what we want out of games. If we end up loving it, we can try to figure out why

Love Savage Worlds, when I picked up the Explorer's book years ago, I was impressed that they had a solid combat system, a mass combat system, vehicular combat rules, rules for multiple genres, chase rules, all in a single $10 book. Of course the game has since expanded and Explorer's Editions aren't quite viable, but still you get everything you need for a game in a $40 book, with systems that would usually require separate $30-50 supplements in other RPG's.

I've never had the chance to actually play it or run it, but I have a copy of the rulebook for Ten Candles and at least based on reading the rulebook and what the one person I know who's played it has told me it sounds AMAZING. Ten Candles is an extremely narrative-focused tragic horror ttrpg that's all about atmosphere and integrates collaboration into both character and world building in a way I haven't seen in other ttrpgs (but I freely admit that could be ignorance on my part). Tragic horror is like survival horror except everyone dies, meaning you go into it knowing your character will die and the point is to tell the story of how it happens. So of course it's not for everyone but the emphasis on hope/beauty in darkness is really appealing to some people (myself included). Also I really like the dice system. It's based on a dice pool of d6s but in addition to straightforward "roll for success" mechanics, the players are also rolling to fight the GM for narrative control over the outcome. I just really like the fluidity and creativity of the system. Also I'm a sucker for any game where a central mechanic is "light stuff on fire irl". XD

The Cypher system is also mechanically GM-friendly when it comes to improv and quickly creating obstacles/encounters, yet still has a lot of cool customization available.

I'm a big fan of Fate, you can fit a whole setting in a few dozen pages. Right now I'm streaming a game where the players are crime investigators in 1950s L.A. But the players (and many NPCs) are classical movie monsters like vampires and lagoon creatures. Every couple of months my weekly gaming group switches genres, one day we're goblins in space, the next we are running a cyberpunk bar/underground pokemon fighting ring...

A few ones I'm enjoying: * LancerRPG-- what if mechs with the artist from Kill Ten Billion Demons * Modiphius' Achtung Cthulhu for WWII meets eldritch horror * Twilight 2k for the Fallout like post-apocalypse out of the Cold War * Shadowrun for Cyberpunk meets fantasy where magic and orcs exist Thanks for the video-- I have played most of these and thinking of using Savage Worlds for a setting I want to play

Games I really like - Old Gods of Appalachia. Wow eldritch Horror in early 1900s Appalachia. This game is amazing. Many of Free League Publishing “cinematic” RPGs (Blade Runner, Alien, The One Ring and The Walking Dead). All have really different mechanics designed to bring out the flavor of the genre. Cypher Systems by Monte Cook - Old Gods uses this system but they have a ton of source material. It’s also derived from Numenera. Simple mechanics focused on storytelling. And Dune. I haven’t played it yet, I’m still reading the source material but it’s fascinating

A good system is Kids on Bikes, and their kickstarter did gangbusters for their second edition. It's a real simple system, theme wise its closer to Tales of the Loop though more monsters and supernatural and less technology. Can't recommend it enough, and look it up on youtube to find shows using it.

I'm currently reading Cortex Prime because of the Netflix Dragon Prince series. I am impressed with the quality of the system, the book is very well written and the illustrations really evoke a feeling of adventure, of wanting to explore the unknown. I feel like I can create any kind of setting and theme and Cortex Prime will be able to give me the tools to make that world work.

I love Within the Ring of Fire. The system is simple to learn. There are standard fantasy races in it, but R. Ander Wood puts his own twists on these fantasy races. The Monsters and Men book for Within the Ring of Fire has over 32 creatures, and that's not counting the advanced and legendary races. It's a classless system. All it uses is 2D8. It plays a bit like the Dr. Who tabletop RPG, but in a a dark fantasy world. While it doesn't do adventure games to well, it does do other forms of gameplay extremely well, especially political games. You don't level up all at once, but rather you start out at level 0, level 0.1, 0.2, 0.2, 0.3, all the way up to level 1. You gradually level up. Fights are dangerous. You need armor. The game focuses on a deep immersive style of play, and it has one of the best what is a tabletop RPG that I've ever seen. The XP system is based upon how well did you sell (Think wrestling) as well as bringing the Flame Tender (FT, or GM) Energy (making sure the game is fun for your FT) and your fellow players. I love the system half to death. It's my favorite!

I really interested the upcoming Iron-age fantasy game Stonetop. There are some actual plays of it if you're interested. I particularly recommend the Blinding Light actual play, as it's designed to teach viewers how to play. In the past few years, I've been trying solo RPGs since getting together to play has been hard. My favourite has been Ex Novo, a city building game for 1-4 players. You can play it as one-shot, then import your city into a different system for a campaign.
@jasonnewell7036

Earthdawn. Hands down my favourite fantasy rpg. It has such a rich background amd takes an intersting perspective on the traditional tropes of fantasy rpgs. I love the fact that your characters are powerful from the beginning but the world still has dangers and threats that can oppose you without getting ridiculous. It also has an exploding dice system, which is one of my favourite mechanics, and the step rating system allows you to use all the different dice in your collection at one point or another. The combination of high fantasy, horror and post-apocalyptic theming makes for a special gaming experience. If you have not seen this game, check it out. It can be a little crunchy for beginners, but the base systems are simple to understand.

Pathfinder 2e is getting a complete rework starting in October. There's a whole variety of reasons why Paizo is doing this, not least of which is to spruce up some of the less dynamic classes like witch.

Great video, will be giving you guys a subscribe! My group has been having loads of fun with a hyper minimalist d6 fantasy game called In Darkest Warrens. Blades In the Dark for the win! Best indie RPG (maybe ever!) easy to run, fun to narrate, epic use of cooperative story-telling. Fast loose rules, no power creep or power builds. Easy to understand mechanics that really are universally applicable. A bit challenging perhaps (at first) for those that must have a hard set of rules for everything - but if you have a creative mind and able to apply rules on the fly and narrate abstract ideas within the rules, this is a game you'll enjoy. Fiction first. Rules later. For fantasy genre lovers - The One Ring is to Tolkien what Blades is to dark-horror-fantasy. AND is the single-best adaptation of Tolkien's world to an RPG ever. I prefer The One Ring 1st edition by Cubicle7, but their products are no longer available. 2nd edition by Free League Press definitely tightens up on some areas from 1st ed that needed more explanation and/or homebrew hacks to make work - but they also changed a number of things that (IMO) didn't need to be changed and worked better (for me) before. Either way - it's again Fiction First, Rules later.

@thomasfevre9515
@thomasfevre9515 Год назад
I can confirm there is no magic in cyberpunk, it's hardcore sci-fi bordering on anticipation. They did à semi humorous supplément about subcultures using plastic surgery to look elves and whatnot and religion/spirituality has a place just like in the real world but there is no mechanic to it. If you want something that mixes the cyberpunk genre with fantasy elements, the go-to game is Shadowrun which is basically that. You have orks and elves and trolls, sorcerers, shamans and magical martial artists called adepts. You have spirits, démons and Angel meddling with human affair. And all that is on top of the ruthless corpos, cyberware and hacking that define cyberpunk.

I play rpgs not ttrpgs. For me computer rpgs came after the real thing, not vice versa. PS. Vampire: the Masquerade and Werewolf: the Apocalypse, both in 2nd edition. Real Warhammer Fantasy Role Play (80's original). MERP. Shadowrun up to 5th edition. Kult, the 90's original. Traveller. Delta Green. Trail of Cthulhu, or Call of Cthulhu (but 5th or 6th edition. 7th is made for people that can't get their heads around simple math. Namely division. Well if you can't get a half, or a quarter from 37 in your head than what does it tell about you?). Legend of the Five Rings (anyone except current edition, which is butchered - stupid rules that expect you to buy FFG's special dice). Deadlands. And for D&D freaks Basic Fantasy and Dungeon Crawl Classics. PS. And Adrzej Sapkowski's (yeah the pne who wrote stories about hexe Geralt of Rivia) Oko Yrrhedesa (Eye of Yrrhedes). Best 2d6 system out there.
