Wait I thought it was called a nursing home? You mean there are 5 different types of senior housing?
1. Independent Living (IL) $
2. Adult Family Care Home (AFCH) $$
3. Assisted Living Facility (ALF) $$$
4. Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF) $$$$
5. Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC) $$$$$
Independent Living (IL) - This is typically an apartment style community which has services that cater to those who are 55 and up. It may be on the same campus as other assisted living communities or it could be a stand alone property. These services may include community activities, outings, restaurant style dining, housekeeping, laundry and other concierge type amenities except for hands on care. In most cases this is a private pay option.
Adult Family Care Home (AFCH) - These are unique because most adult family care homes exist in a residential setting within a neighborhood. They are licensed by the State of Florida through AHCA for 5 people or less. In most cases, they are family owned and operated. This option may be a great way for someone to continue living in a smaller home-like environment in a much more intimate setting. They accept private pay as well as various Medicaid programs. These homes do provide meals, laundry, housekeeping, assistance with showers, toileting, transferring, dressing as well as medication reminders and more.
Assisted Living (AL or ALF) - Assisted living communities are licensed and seem to be one of the most popular forms of senior housing available today. They come in all shapes, sizes and provide a variety of care services from as little as 6 beds to more than 120. It is primarily private pay, however, LTC Insurance, VA Aid & Attendance and Statewide Medicaid Managed Care programs can all be used to help subsidize the cost.
They provide meals, laundry, housekeeping, assistance with showers, toileting, transferring, dressing as well as medication reminders and much more. Smaller ones may feel like a bed and breakfast while larger ones may feel like a resort. They may also offer memory care services on the same property, however, some facilities have stand-a-lone memory care buildings. It is important to explore your options and find the one that is best for your loved one because they are all different.
Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF) - The skilled nursing facilities are what most people would remember to be a “nursing home.” However, this is no longer the case. Skilled nursing facilities may provide three different services, 1. Long term care, 2. Short term rehabilitation, 3. Outpatient therapy. I always point out that assisted living is more hospitality and skilled nursing facilities are more medical. Private pay and Medicaid will typically pay for long term care whereas Medicare or Medicare Advantage plans will pay for short term rehabilitation.
Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC) - Imagine all of the previous services listed all on the same campus. This is the concept behind CCRC communities. This option is more limited and depends on the market size. They typically have different monthly packages depending on the size of the “buy-in” amount. These may be referred to as “Life Care” plans.
