I have a friend in a senior independent living community. She says that where she lives, it's not that the staff are trying to "push" people into assisted living---if anything, there are too many people coming into IL who should have gone to AL to begin with. Adult children sometimes underestimate how much help their parent really needs, or perhaps they are trying to save money.

Thank you for sharing this comment. I agree with you completely. More and more Independent Living Communities are allowing residents to stay with their own home care aide. In many buildings now, the majority of residents really do need Assisted Living.

Very interesting, and after hearing this, I would rather find someone to come and care for me(Companion) or find someone who either lives with me or I live with them. I would hate being forced into an assisted living facility when I do not need it.

Thank you for your comment. More places are allowing the residents to hire their own aide, so they can stay in their Independent Living Unit. This will cost much more than moving to Assisted Living.

I am just under 55 and my spinal health is declining rapidly. I have a long enough history with medical providers, non-invasive proedures, physical therapy, chiropractic treatments, and hospitalizations. I nearly always have acute on chronic condition condition going on, and have frequent ER visits and hospitalizations. I can drive, but I cannot walk far and do have a permanent accibible tag. I cannot shop for myself...Some ADL's and IADL's provide freedom, others do not. I don't have the option of living with family any longer. Independent living for now seems the best choice. Are government funded medical coverage programs in my age group typically funding this kind of living arrangement? I am on a very limited income due to my significant number of spinal diagnoses. Love your videos. I am sure you aren't able to give definitive advise (and I'm in Ohio), but any information would be very helpful.

I am sorry for my late reply. I am sorry to hear about your hardships. Generally speaking, financial assistance from the government does not cover IL (Independent Living). Very interesting. I’m considering moving to a CCRC and I know that they have assisted living and memory care, but I was unaware that that staff could not, by law, provide any assistance as long as I was in independent living. I’m fine with that, but I didn’t know why the medical staff would not be available to help me if I needed it. Now I do!

I've been in IL apartments for over 10 years, and cannot transition to AL because I'm low income. I'd like to continue in IL, but will need more in-home help as time goes one. Will the industry finally provide more help so we Baby Boomers can safely Age In Place?

Apologies for the late reply. I suggest that you find out if there is an Assisted Living Community near you that is paid for by Medicaid.

Great story. I started the job at the elderly independent facility in the kitchen, serving, I love it. Plus, I am going to learn how to cook for a large crowd (1 serving). If I ever get my POW return home or my homeless shelter, I will know how to cook for a large crowd, and a good process. A woman named Marylynn- asked me to microwave her food, I said "we don't have a microwave". Marylynn got upset, stood up, and walked out of the dining hall with her walker. I saw her today and said "you have 3 monkeys on your walker, how did you get those monkeys'?. Marylynne said "I won them, in a door prize contest". I know why we did that, when Marylynne returns to heavens gates, she will know what the 3 monkeys meant, and why they were really on her walker. Gods son and I are both year of the Monkey. True Story

Hi Joe, your videos are really informative. I've worked in the industry for almost four years, but I have never heard of an assisted living locator. I'd love to hear more about this line of work and how you got involved. I really love what I do as the Lifestyle 360 Assistant Director for a Five Star Premier Residence. As fun and rewarding as it is, the pay is abysmally low, and not even approaching the cost of living in my area. I am looking for ways to complement what I am already doing. Thank you so much for your knowledge and transparency!

Yes, that’s correct. Independent means what it says. Garbage pickup (if you’re in stand-alone cottages), mail and package delivery, all these things are still available to you.
