Poker is a hard game to win. It can be even harder at low stakes, when you're not only trying to beat other players, but the rake is taking a large percentage of the pot. In this video, I go over some of my biggest tips for beating low stakes poker. This video was filmed at the Hustler Casino for the Max Pain Monday Meetup Game. I was playing $2/3 no limit; so without further adieu, enjoy the session!

Clarification on some of these tips: Overall these are some of my tips on how to BEAT low stakes, but you still need to have good fundamentals to apply these tips properly. ALSO, there are multiple paths to being profitable. Ultimately you have to choose a strategy you think is best for you. More clarification Tip 1: I’m not saying to buy in as deep as possible (especially if you’re a beginner or aren’t great deep stack). Try buying in around 100 BBs. Tip 2: Slowly work aggression into your game, and learn how to implement it in your strategy Tip 3-5: no clarification needed

The PLO bomb pot was such a good lesson about how one does NOT play PLO bomb pots. Your opponent should FOLD to your raise on the flop. In fact, the initial bet was suspect. The AA9 board dominates the action. This is because the hand currently in the lead is likely to remain so. The top board, on the other hand, is very dynamic. A set, ESPECIALLY bottom set, is in danger. The fact that the Ad is still at large is a huge problem too. Any player with Ad and another diamond has a great hand vs your set. In that case you are getting free rolled. You are, in effect, never winning both ways. Your absolute best case scenario is that you are facing two opponents with an Ace and they are both dead on the top board. To put it another way... You have bottom set. If there was just ONE board, this hand would be, at best, marginally playable. Now you are going to play this hand for half the antes?
@BrantzenPoker
@BrantzenPoker Год назад
Solid analysis - yeah people have difficulty playing PLO double board bomb pots since most people don’t play them often, so there’s a lot of mistakes I see

These are great tips. I am working on being a little aggressive on the table and it's paying off. I like watching you play and agree with buying at least 100 BB and you can double up faster.. I only play low stakes 1-3 for now so am still a little careful and feeling what cards are coming my way because players will play any two cards or even with match sticks. Great video!

Cool video, I like the tips mixed in. Would like to know more about "beating th rake" I haven't played in a casino live (just online and home games) and I have been kicking around the idea of trying 1/3 live, but I don't want to get wrecked. Keep those tips coming!
@BrantzenPoker
@BrantzenPoker Год назад
Yeah! The biggest thing to remember is that casinos take money from every hand. So instead of just 50/50 winners/losers, the casino is the biggest winner, which makes it harder for players to win. You just have to be conscious on how much the casino is taking and how that affects game dynamics. If it’s your first time playing live, you can always buy in a bit shorter. My recommendation for anyone is to only bring to a casino what you’re fully okay losing. And don’t keep running to the atm! If you lose it, you lose it!

Plo: triple the last bet then add the remaining either/ both bet on that street and what's in the middle. I believe you had 70 in the middle. Guy bet 45. So 45 x 3 = 135 + 70 = 205. That's your max raise.
@BrantzenPoker
@BrantzenPoker Год назад
Perfect - thanks for the explanation!
@ececec13
@ececec13 Год назад
Wasn’t the bet 55? It’s 3x the last biggest bet plus the trailing bets/or the pot In this case it doesn’t matter since you had put the dude all-in anyways and you covered him, but you guys forgot to add the existing pot to the 165 So it should have been 235…why didn’t the dealer know this?
@denjunki
@denjunki Год назад
The reasoning is, a pot sized bet will always give the last bettor 2:1 pot odds. In your example, he must call 180 to win 235 + 55 + 70 = 360
@BrantzenPoker
@BrantzenPoker Год назад
@@ececec13 the reason was because we were playing NL, but we’re doing PLO bomb pots on dealer changes so this dealer didn’t know how to deal it since it wasn’t something she normally does
@leehjones
@leehjones Год назад
Excellent set of tips - probably the one about ego most important. Btw, I think you're a little too quick to check back value hands on the river. I know *you* might not call with worse, but lot of other people would. I try to make calling ranges the other person's problem. I understand that against a toughie like Hus you don't want to get check-raise bluffed off the best hand. But against most players, when they check the river, your decent value hands are mostly freerolling a bet. Go for it.
@BrantzenPoker
@BrantzenPoker Год назад
Thanks for the compliment on the tips. As for the checking back value hands - definitely a recurring issue with the two of us 😂 I guess I can be a little stubborn with this topic, and can definitely work on this part of my game. It can be tough for me since I’ve had decent results overall. But perhaps I AM leaving value on the table overall. Thanks for your comments and suggestions; they’re definitely something for me to at least think about 😬
@leehjones
@leehjones Год назад
@@BrantzenPoker Hey, you gotta play your game, and I have no doubt you have good results. But more is better. Particularly in the high rake SoCal world, you want the few pots you play to be huge. That padt river bet, even if it's just 50-60% psb, I'd a big number.

Hus played you saying he was gonna limp reraise hoping someone would try to trap, so he gets to see a cheap flop with his trash and bust someone. It would’ve worked too had you not got lucky. These guys seem crazy, but they’re not all dumb, they know someone will try to trap them eventually. Played in a game where someone was making ridiculous raises everytime a splash pot was played (casino added an envelope with a mystery prize to the pot) This guy finally checked his option once he saw everyone limp, and this later allowed him to raise future pots with legit hands in order to get action
@BrantzenPoker
@BrantzenPoker Год назад
Yeah Hus was playing crazy for sure, but by no means did I think he was a dumb player. I was pretty cognizant of how capable he was, and also that’s why I made that comment to him. I was pretty sure I was behind, and I let him see a flop for cheap. At the end of the day, it was too hard for me to fold my aces with the amount of money he had left, and I just got lucky
