Been a Shawn convert for over 12 months. To say Shawn's teaching has made a huge difference is an understatement!! Now I really really enjoy my golf. Of all my learnings a correct grip is fundamental - no it's the key to succes in golf for me. This includes success with those 10m chips, 80m wedges and those 250m bombs. Do try it!!

Hi Shawn. These online tutorials are a revelation! Been watching so much of the "classic" teaching which emphasises the what but not the why. Your explanations and examples across other sports have helped me to simplify so much of my swing. Played yesterday with the mantra of just cutting grass in the direction I wanted to start the ball and was hitting more consistently and with greater power. Not my best score ever - a 6ft putt still costs the same as a 200yd drive - but a more satisfying round and without the stiffness the next day as my swing is now what works for me not anyone else! Thanks again. 👍

Hey Shawn, thanks for taking the time to reply. I’ve been thinking a lot about all the things that open the face…wrist hinge(extension of lead wrist), shallowing the club, forward shaft lean. So many players come over the top because it’s their subconscious trying to compensate for an open clubface. The stronger grip or just shutting the face helps to offset all these things. The clubface is so important

I have watched numerous golf videos from a variety of sources & not once(until now) have I seen the recommendation to place the left hand thumb down the center of the shaft.
@golflessons

Slight. Inside, not on top; the tip of the thumb is close to on top; BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY, IT IS THE BLOODY FUNCTIONALITY OF THE GRIP THAT IS THE ISSUE, NOT WHERE THEY TELL YOU TO PLACE YOUR DIGITS PINOCCHIO STYLE!!!

As I have a tendency to hook or pull the ball, Your grip being very strong I avoided it until today at the range. Oh my god I've never hit the ball so well the sound it made was so crisp a noise I'd never heard before. The ball went so far and at the target well past the target. Congratulations on your son's success. BMX is a very demanding and challenging sport. I'm a bit of a classicist as far as swings are concerned and as I'm sure you know, yours is not right out of a textbook. However, the more I've looked at it the more that I've come to appreciate its areas of mechanical soundness and its overall efficiency. You're impact is particularly impressive for it's consistency seemingly throughout the bag. Just thought that I'd relay my progressive evolution of appreciation for your move. Cheers.

Hi Shawn, great video as always. Love all your material and trying out all the drills and it´s working great. Even ordered a grasscutter to practice out in the garden:) Just a question about the grip: I was experimenting with a sort of one plane type of swing this last year and in some way trying out what Bryson Dechambeau is doing. He has of course got Jumbomax grips on but he is saying that you should put the grip more in the "lifeline" of your hand/palm so to create more of a palm grip which is much more upright than what you teach in this video and in doing so he says it eliminates another variable of the swing that could cause a problem. What is your thoughts on that seeing he is apparently managing to hit it very long and straight doing it that way.
@golflessons
@golflessons 2 года назад
Everyone’s hands and wrists are and can be very different. Keegan Bradley could never swing like that right? I sent a lot of time with Moe and he asked me “what are they doing”? I don’t grip like that! I grip it like a hammer! So there are a lot of optical illusions here and the most important guiding principal here is FUNCTIONALITY. Bryson can compress that ball and has the release pattern I completely advocate to all my students and he has that on turbo. In our premium channel at www.wisdomingolfpremium.com type “release” in the search box in the top right of the “list of videos by date” and sink your teeth into that! Then use a grip that will allow you to release this way without letting go of the club in either hand and you will have a winner!!

Youy. are such a creatively wonderful teacher. Amazing. One question: You emphasize the toe up in the air for iron shots. Another teacher emphasizes the sole flat on the ground at contact. Doesn't the toe-up cause the club to close more when it reaches the turf? Also, do you recommend keeping the driver slightly toe-up as well? Again, thank you for you constantly unfolding wisdom and generosity.
@golflessons
@golflessons 2 года назад
hey Gene! the goal with the irons is when you deliver the turf into the target, that the sole of the club is plus or minus 3 degrees to the grass; and woods are not flat bottomed like irons, so this does not apply there. and no, the toe up can still fade and slice the ball!

Strong left hand hammer grip has given me so much more power. Thanks! Shawn, can you consider a video about releasing the head through impact? I have learned through pain and several visits to my chiropractor that I keep my head down too long which has caused my neck problems. Love this content! Out of curiosity, what are your thoughts on oversized grips, such as Jumbomax? I have issues with arthritis in my lead hand , and I feel as though with the size of a standard grip (I wear a medium/large glove), I have to grip rather tight to prepare for the compression I get through impact. Do you feel as though a larger grip could assist with this? Thanks!

Another great video Shawn! I always thought that you should grip the golf club in a natural way like a suitcase, briefcase or a tennis racket and thanks to you I won't be listening to anyone else about it anymore! One thing is the relation of the grip to the club face, I assume that you should turn the face about 45 degrees, could you confirm this or point to the video that definitely explains this issue?
@golflessons
@golflessons 2 года назад
You would simply turn the club more open or more closed depending upon the curve in the flight you would like to see. Please see “predict perfect contact and direction shawn clement” and on our premium channel, it would be “predict contact” then “the goldie locks series” and our ongoing “unstoppable momentum series” which is going through in detail the same aspects.

I don’t do short or long; those terms should have never existed…I do FUNCTIONAL. What do YOUR hands need to do to stay on the club, deliver a dynamically open or closed club face that will have the ball curve the way you wish it to, and release in both directions without giving you blisters, tearing your glove or giving you golfer’s elbow.

I’ve been using your swing thoughts and the grip helps my ball flights. I fight the urge to go back to “swing at the ball” instead of swing through the ball like I’m throwing my club. I had one issue yesterday- when I hit shorts with my 7 and 8 irons and looked at the club face after shots that sliced right (I’m right handed) the location of the turf marks on the face indicted my contact was half way between the center of the face toward the toe of the club. Question: as a high handicapper, Is ball location in the center of my stance or path of my swing where I need to concentrate on to try to get my irons closer to intended target. Distance was good, just left or right (mostly right).

You can use the baseball grip with the thumb on the side; not the most efficient in transition but still anatomically functional; grips need to be the right size even more for this one and typically bigger.

My take on Shawn's finish is that it's a result of accelerating past the ball (accomplishing the "task"), which results in a high finish. Most pros/top amateurs have a high finish at the end of a full swing. My two cents.

Hi Thomas! When the arms get pulled out of their sockets towards the target because of all this excess momentum, the arms are forced to go up out of pure self preservation! It is COMPLETELY HOW HUMAN ARM ANATOMY WORKS!!

Another winner but, my question is this. Is PGA Tour Champions golfer, Doug Barron your long lost brother? ; )

Do you recommend a Forward shaft Lean at address, like pre setting the impact position?
@golflessons
@golflessons 2 года назад
Always do things with purpose; what are you getting ready to do at address? You are getting ready to deliver an action THROUGH THE BALL and into the picture of your flight plan. This is why you see us braced against our lead side, already focused on the target and then we can gather some nice momentum in the backswing to re-brace and deliver through the ball into that picture. See all our “how to start the swing shawn clement” videos and “wait for the weight shawn clement” and “sledge hammer axe drill shawn clement”

I don’t understand. It seems like I’m this video you are promoting a weak grip with the thumb down the middle of the shaft. All of your other videos promote the strong grip which I have begun using and am seeing tremendous results. Which was is it sir?

Strong grip man!! It is just the way the club needs to go in the hand and then you adjust the face of the club to suit your ball flight and for the vast majority of golfers, this will be a strong to very strong combination.

Shawn, would you say that naturally we should all have a stronger grip?
@golflessons
@golflessons Год назад
Many are able to play good to great without it but the vast majority would benefit from a strong grip yes; just look at simple tasks like delivering an axe to a tree or a hammer to a nail horizontally below your waist, or batting a ball or machete through a bamboo; strong grip is way more anatomically sound and efficient. And I was one of the neutral grip guys when I started 45 years ago from a Gary Player and Jack Nicklaus book…and played my whole junior career with it. I have never struck the ball more purely than now and it just keeps getting better!

The clubface is so important

soooooo if you can't get your hand in that "vacuum sealed, air tight" position - you likely have grips that are too big?

Hey Kerry! Way more to it than that; strong grip is the beginning and a great base! Next is are you using an intermediate point to line up AND FOR DELIVERING the blur of club of the arc of the golf swing as well as ARE YOU DELIVERING THE SPEED OF THE SWING THROUGH AND OUT into the direction you want to start the ball? See our amazing premium channel at www.wisdomingolfpremium.com (only $9.95 a month, stay as long as you like) and watch these videos: -blur of club -all the “arc blur” videos -all the “task” videos to get your action THROUGH THE BALL (pick your best task and get really good with it) -throwing the club -the throwing series -the goldie locks series (this is the prediction gold to how the ball is in the way of the task) -target confirmation series (The cherry on the sundae to confirm you stayed with the task and did not default to hitting at the ball) THIS IS A WHOLE NEW RHELM OF GOLF…
