In this in-depth music theory tutorial, Pyramind instructor Ryan Rey goes over multiple ways you can use the Circle of Fifths (or Camelot Wheel) as a musician or DJ.
1. Major and Minor Scales
As you move up the circle of fifths, the number of sharps in each scale increases. Whenever a sharp is added to a scale, that same sharp is carried over to the next scale on the circle. Ryan also shows us how to use the chart to determine which sharps are added to each scale.
2. Chords in Each Key
Next, Ryan shows goes over how to use the circle of fifths to find the diatonic triads (chords) of the key you are working in. He recommends using the interactive circle of fifths on randscullard.com to make the process easier.
3. Related Keys
The circle of fifths can also be used to find related keys. We can see related major and minor keys, as well as other closely related keys. This is especially useful for DJs who need help figuring out which songs can easily be mixed together. Ryan also goes over using the Camelot Wheel, which uses a number system to display similar information conveyed on the circle of fifths.
4. Mode Mixing
You can also use the circle of fifths to find parallel keys (keys that share the same tonic). For example, C Major and C Minor are parallel keys. Using the chart, you can instantly know which notes and chords are in a parallel key.
5. Tonic and Dominant Relationships
Since the circle of fifths is presented in fifths, you can easily see the tonic and dominant (fifth note) of each key. This is especially useful for musicians looking to explore the idea of secondary dominance - using a chord that is the dominant chord of a certain key other than the tonic key.

Find a pattern to fit any chord or arbitrary set of notes on the circle and you can rotate this pattern by any amount. This does all chord changes, notes in the scale, or any other pattern.

Great job explaining this approach! I find the Circle of 5ths to be a huge time saver for analyzing existing music, but I think it is extremely cumbersome to use during composition. I agree with John Coltrane's assertion that starting with a melody based on note intervals and layering harmonies with the melody is more true to the notion of music as a language. Starting with Key Signatures and Chords usually leads to limp noodle compositions that create lots of work for performers without delivering any clear message to the audience. Usually doesn't mean always; but if you make your melody an afterthought, there's a slim chance anyone else will care about it.

Can we talk about composition.. ? Could you explain how to apply the circle of 5ths to music in (songwriting or improvising ? is it for analyzing only.. for figuring out what key your in based on the number of sharps or flats? If I kept repeating the circle of 5ths cycle, I understand I am adding a sharp each time,,, my question is, why would this be done.? Key changes? a Modal reason, non diatonically speaking? Thanks
@notrningwheels
@notrningwheels 7 лет назад
Anthony Lundell You would use these during songwriting or inprovising to implement classical music theory, which will make your music sound more familiar...That's Not something I usually need help doing with my compositions, but some people might find it useful. this is simply a chart of musical musical relationships. If you understand the words on the chart and the terms in the video it will allow you to look these relationships up and/or memorize them more easily.
@AnthonyUFOLundell
@AnthonyUFOLundell 7 лет назад
The New Wizard of Oz I see. thanks. this sounds like it's only useful if you based everything on C major , staying in C major, adding different Sharps and flats (altering) C major to play keys other than C major. I play guitar so I don't really think in terms of flats and sharps manly scale patterns. I was really hoping for a Hidden Gem you know, kind of what happens when you play a flat 3 and a flat over a major chord. (technically speaking it doesn't work) but that clash is what gives blues that blues feel. the 5th degree is Mixolydian right!? But playing G major scale (Ionian) rather than G(Mixolydian) the natural 7 of G introduces a F#. This makes C major C Lydian! Now we're in the Key of G. ?! lol
@notrningwheels
@notrningwheels 7 лет назад
Anthony Lundell There are no "hidden gems" in classical music theory. The circle of fifths, at best, will help you remember several things more easily. To find hidden gems, you have to actually listen closely to experimental music. Coltrane and Miles Davis are way ahead of the circle of fifths while still being easy to digest. Once you understand a lot of what they did, check out experimental Hip Hop to learn about minimalism timbral progressions and mixing. electronicexplorations.org has a lot of good experimental mixes, but requires more time commitment. There are no shortcuts

All the 12 tones are all connected. Every pattern or sequence are all connected. Circle of fifths is connected to the chromatic scales, of which is based off of the two whole tone scales based off of an augmented, etc. Everything is connected.

Indeed.
@notrningwheels
@notrningwheels 7 лет назад
That's what Pythagorus brought back from Africa and told people he invented. However, it's been well demonstrated that people can learn to hear at least 24 distinct tones (ie quarter tones). Using electronics, people have demonstrated an ability to recognize many more.
@WilliamSlaght
@WilliamSlaght 7 лет назад
I understand what you mean, but I'm mostly focusing on the 12 tones of western tonal music. Even if 24, everything would be still connected immensely.

Does anyone know why the clockwise circle is in 5ths and not 4ths? I guess it was because the 5th is regarded as the next dominant note to the tonic. But chord progressions/changes, for example in jazz, nearly always move in 4ths. So, as clockwise is the normal forward direction, I would expect the circle to go forward clockwise in 4ths. I know I could just go 4ths anti-clockwise, but that’s backward to me, not forward. By the way, I like Ryan's explanation of how to use the chart - no quibbles there.

The letter name if the 5ths relative minor is also the third of the scale example c is 1, g is 5, g has a relative minor of e so a c major is ceg that's how I learned it also to get the minor you flat the third so c minor is c eflat g

I understand the theory. but applying this during a song would result in a key change? "non-diatonic" in the terms of parent scales/keys?! Instead of using mixolydian for example over the 5 chord, I would play the "straight major scale(Ionian)" off the 5 degree, starting on the 5th degree of the parent scale. In the Parent scale of Gmajor, I would play D Ionian rather than D mixolydian? Would that be one way to appy this ? Thanks
@frankiesangiovanni691
@frankiesangiovanni691 6 лет назад
Anthony Lundell that's a cool way to see it. Instead of playing in a key you could see every chord existing in its own key.
@JohnDAvery-tf4td
@JohnDAvery-tf4td 6 лет назад
Anthony Lundell - I think you've answered your own question. Since Ionian is the tonic scale of a major key, playing D Ionian rather than D Mixolydian over the V chord in G major would change the key from G major to D major because the C# in D Ionian isn't in the G major scale. On the other hand, the C natural in D Mixolydian keeps the piece in G major. With regard to Franklin's comment about thinking of each chord as being in its own key, that's how I've always thought of them. Chords are built from the tonic of the key they're named for (their root), after all, not from the tonic of the key the piece is in.

So in short the circle of fifths is useless for us that just grab music sheets and play them by looking at the key signatures in the clefs. Also useless if we have no interest in composing, mixing, or playing the chord a different way. Am I missing something? Is interesting how the circle is related in a mathematical way but have no usage to play music sheets. Good video.

The title of the video is sort of misleading. How to actually use the Circle of Fifths is better shown on the piano, on a real musical situation. This shows rather how to understand the Circle, not exactly how to use it on a real musical situation but it's very useful anyway. The Interactive Circle of Fifths was indeed a really cool stuff.

its hard to conceptualize as its not really math, its based on "scale degrees". For example, C Major, the 5th scale degree up the C major scale is G.

But if you go down 4 scale degrees in C Major you also end up at G. Does that help?

I'm sure this is a great video, but I had to stop watching because the harmonics in the MIDI keyboard sound you were using were throwing me off in a big way. Would be awesome if you could find a piano sound that doesn't have so many impure overtones to muddle the fundamentals you're trying to demonstrate. For instance, the C Major scale you played barely sounded like C, and G was even worse, despite using the right trigger notes on the keyboard.
