Thank you for the video. I would love to build some plywood aquariums now. I used to be not really be interested in it, but seeing it being built changed that. The epoxy coat looks great actually. I think I like it a lot better than the pond shield look. Thanks again for the video. God bless you.

Good job on sourcing the Interseal 670 HS. I was trying to get some for a build, but they wound up not selling to me. They don't sell to DIY'ers. I will look at some other options, Pentair, Sherman Williams, or Benjamin Moore. What was the epoxy you used when fiberglassing, and your base coat? And did you have any issues with "blush"? Did you have to wipe it down before applying paint? I didn't notice you prepare the surface before paint in any way. Sorry if you explained that already.
@OffTheDeepEndAquatics
@OffTheDeepEndAquatics 3 года назад
Dm if u can on Instagram and I can help you get it if you need some in the future. I had the same problem they wouldn't sell to me but they have lots of reps all over the United States that will sell it

Hi Mike, did you consider chopstrand fibreglass on the tank? It's supposed to be used for waterproofing and strengthening. You use a few coats of resin with it, and finish with a flowcoat epoxy with colouring in it.
@OffTheDeepEndAquatics
@OffTheDeepEndAquatics 3 года назад
I used chopstrand i believe. Its weaved in every direction so its strong in all directions. The fiberglass glass people are confusing. Talked to a lot of them but they don't know anything past what they do which is almost never making a big aquarium. I think the fiberglass work was completely unnecessary. I could have just laid dry glass into the interseal epoxy along all the seams and I know that would have been sufficient. The gel coats they use and even the fiberglass resin are just types of epoxy anyway.

@@OffTheDeepEndAquatics Check out this guy ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-W60iuC5T1FM.html He's from here in the UK, and fibre glasses koi ponds. He has lots of videos on youtube. I am gonna use the same stuff as him on my plywood build. I don't think the fibreglass you used was the waterproofing type. It was weaved stuff rather than chopstrand, but the resin is maybe good enough. Plus all the layers of epoxy paint you used.

Hello Mike, I am planning a Monster Tank inside a climate controlled building, next year. 12x22x4 total of 8,000 gallons. It's going to be cinderblock construction with epoxy inside. I will be breeding Japanese koi in it.

You'll need to go back and watch part one to fully understand but they need to be different sizes for different size pieces of glass. I recommend a minimum of 3" overlap

Maybe adding a universal rock background to it would hide all the blemishes and would look bad ass.

Id love to but it would cost more than the tank cost to build. They're super expensive and at this size it would be insane expensive

I have done alot of fiberglass work. If you do another tank try going wider with your seam glass and then come back with a DA (dual-action) sander and feather the glass in. If you want to get real anal before epoxy you can go over everything with thin coats of bondo (automotive) and get everything perfectly smooth just like you would when you paint a car.
@OffTheDeepEndAquatics
@OffTheDeepEndAquatics 3 года назад
Hey thanks for the comment that makes a lot of sense. I ended up relying on the epoxy and sanding to make most of the seams go away but if I could go back I would have done what you're saying. Like I said in the video it was my first time. Luckily it still got the job done

@7:49. It was literally "Killing you"....the smell you were talking about, and its effects, are the isocyanites in the paint/epoxy. Whatever you ingest, never leaves your system. Some serious stuff. I work in autobody trade and the epoxies we use are bad....and i imagine that stuff is even worse. Looks good tho...i am watching closely as this is similar to what i am looking to do
