Bart is the only hope to save these boys from being enslaved. Fantastic sets, screenplay, and even song lyrics were provided by Dr. Seuss. Features the only piano academy ever known to be equipped with cells and surrounded by an electric fence.

It's amazing. I've wondered all my life about a movie that scared me as a kid, but I didn't know the name. I just remembered an evil teacher, kids in a oppresive world and some scenes like the one in which the boy gets a key inside a metronome while the evil teacher sleeps while earing its sound, and another one where the boy wakes up from the nightmare to find everything was just a bad dream... And I finally found it!!! It has been a really hard search on the internet. I've read the commentaries and it's so funny that people got so scared as me when I saw it.

Isn't it weird when you watch a movie as a kid and it so much different when you watch as an adult. I had nightmares over the ending while the kids where playing that big piano. Took forever to find this.

This movie scared the hell out of me when I was a kid back in the early 70s. Over the years, I would occasionally remember bits and pieces of the movie, more in particular, the scene of the long piano and the many kids playing the keys. To add to my horror, my mother signed me up for basic piano lessons around the same time that I saw this movie. I refused to play the piano out of fear. As the years passed, I would still remember this movie on occasion. I'm age 49 and for the first time I just googled trying to find this movie and its name which lead me to this youtube page. I just watched this trailer and the scenes still kinda freak me out.

As an adult trying to remember this movie, I had turned the hand on top of the boy's cap into a propeller cap in my memory and have been using "film boy propeller cap" in all of my searches. I still remember the fear this movie generated in me. I was five or six and had vivid nightmares I can recall now. Being sent off to piano camp and no way to get out of it, my parents telling me, "There's nothing we can do, signed the papers.". FOr years I wondered what that movie was. I'd ask about the movie with the giant piano, and no one acknowledged it. I see it will be on TV today. I am going to record it. :)

Many in the Hollywood preview audience walked out after the first 15 minutes of this film. Afterward it was extensively re-edited, resulting in the elimination of about 1/4 of the original songs and something like a half-hour of run-time. It still bombed in general release. Seuss (Geisel) was thereafter considered box office poison and admitted publicly, "I'm not for Hollywood, and they're not for me". The experience almost prevented him from approving licensing for the live-action (Jim Carrey) version of "The Grinch" decades later, in 2000, during the waning years of Seuss's life.

My mum put me in front of the TV in the 60s to watch this and it freaked me out. It has a distinctly odd and trippy feel to it. Should have had a content warning ;~) And although the cinematography is rather static and pedestrian by modern standards, the lighting is excellent and set design outstanding.

The trailer does nothing to show how amazing this film is. It did scare/fascinate me as a child, and I only saw PART of it on a crappy black and white TV. Seeing it on the big screen is an amazing experience, or on DVD. It's funny, magicial, creepy and the music is suprisingly good and quite poignant at times. Suess disowned the film, but I think the creators actually did a great job of capturing his imaginary places and people.

I watched this with my dad back when Turner Classic Movies would show “blocks” of movies with an overarching theme. I don’t recall what the theme was at the time I watched this film, but I both enjoyed and was a bit disturbed by the film in question, so it probably had something to do with unintended horror films or something to that effect. 😆
