Props to PSA for just sending a run of the mill rifle, not cherry picking one. This is the first overview where I’ve seen issues like that. The reason your upper was getting marred (BY BRASS BTW, brass is typically considered a non marring material...that's why machinists, tool and die makers, gun smiths, welders, etc often use brass mallets...) is because the upper receiver is extruded aluminum rather than forged or even billet aluminum AND you got a cerakoted version which means the aluminum wasn't anodized. Type 3 hard coat anodizing increases surface hardness and resistance to abrasion by creating a layer of aluminum oxide. Extruded aluminum is typically fairly soft in the first place so for the purpose of firearms manufacturing it should be anodized. If the quality of the extruded material was higher, like 7075 T6 aluminum, you may be able to get away with cerakote in lieu of anodizing but if I had to guess these guns are made from 6061 aluminum WHICH is fine if its forged/billet and especially if its anodized...but again, that isn't the case here...
@Jessersadler
@Jessersadler 2 месяца назад
According to PSA. It's 6065.
@armorers_wrench
@armorers_wrench 2 месяца назад
@@Jessersadler The material itself isn't necessarily an issue, the use of cerakote rather than anodizing is suboptimal for an extruded part of this kind. The result of that is that brass was able to mar the receiver pretty significantly which really shows how soft the material is.
@jardo531
@jardo531 2 месяца назад
Interesting.
@Jessersadler
@Jessersadler 2 месяца назад
@armorers_wrench that's not mar-ing, that's displacement, and no type of anodizing is going to stop that. Type III is only 2 thousandths of an inch (0.002 with a minimum of 0.0005) That doesn't add any form of surface hardness to stop it from deformation, especially in this case.
@PureCountryof91
@PureCountryof91 2 месяца назад
It's definitely got something to do with the coatings. But, some recent product posts suggest that PSA has figured out colors in their anodizing process. Which would make me super happy. For reasons.

While this review was so in dept and well thought out, I definitely feel like the wear issues seen were due to the rifle being way over gassed out the the box. Right off the bat within 10 minutes of the video you can see rounds ejecting way forward around 1300. Once the Can was added the internals were basically beat to death because the rifle was never properly tuned. The gas block may have been the issue from the get go and that's on PSA. My 10.5 JAKL is an early model with the 4 position gas block and it has been a great suppressor host. But my brothers Full size JAKL (just like this one with) has the weird 6 or 8 positions. Sadly it had issues right out of the box where the gas block was just rotating freely due to the detent not catching. One thing I tell everyone that ask me about PSA. Great company with some very good products. But whatever you buy always strip the firearm down and reassemble to proper torque and use good Loctite. Unfortunately that's where PSA lacks
@bigshoe84
@bigshoe84 2 месяца назад
As a non PSA fanboy I have to say that the massive overgassing caused from the gas block not working properly while suppressed is completely to blame for the malfunctions seen midway through the video. Also negating the reason to run a gas piston gun to begin with. Obviously most people would have sent the rifle back as soon as they noticed the gas block not keeping its position but I applaud just pushing through the review as-is. Still fun to watch. Edit: Later in the video he basically says all of this more or less.

I really want PSA to succeed. While I appreciate their claimed desire to 'arm Americans', etc...I live in PSA land (two retail stores within a 25 minute drive) so I see...literally dozens and dozens of PSA products at every range I go to. I currently own two of their AK products and my friends and I own numerous lowers (which I don't consider a real PSA firearm). I have seen my fair share of PSA failures in handgun and rifle form at my range and other local ranges. Some are miniscule, some are "gun is dead on first range trip", etc. One of my AK's arrived without a front sight post (which they replaced, of course). My buddy had a Dagger lower which needed numerous fixes to function. I've seen an AK snap its firing pin on the first magazine, and another with questionable gassing. All the AK's I've seen have had canted front sight posts (admittedly farily common on most AK's). Their in-house metal furniture for their AK's is pretty terrible, and sadly I do find the JAKL's suspiciously heavy for what they do. Everything about the company is just 92%. Unfortunately not great feedback from people who work there (I know two people personally who quit due to just a crazy/bad retail experience in the stores). Their QC is just not there, and I think they always fall a little short in their quest to produce 1,000's of SKUs instead of getting a handful of basic ones right/squared away/etc. I do think they rely on the fact that most of their consumers will not even shoot 1,000-1,500 rounds through their firearms in 5-10 years time. I want PSA to succeed...but I want them to do significantly better than they do currently. I really wish they'd concentrate on getting something right before making 150 versions of it. While I enjoy my two PSA guns so far, they're not on my "trust with my life" list.

I would trust my G5 AK-47 with my life I literally have 3,000 rounds or so through it and I've had literally zero malfunctions. But that's another thing The AK-47 was literally designed for that cartridge maybe I'm being a purist but it was designed for steel case ammo and was designed to get the crap beat out of it. It also has an FN barrel so it makes it pretty freaking accurate too for what it is. Definitely more accurate than the ammo is. I also have the AK9 that they make with probably about 1500 rounds and have only had an issue with the lightest of loads of 9 mm regular self-defense cycles extremely quickly and flawlessly. I do have their AR-47 And right at about 2,500 rounds The extractor broke off but they have since issued new strengthened extractors. This same gun came out of the box extremely over gas and I realized that within the first magazine so I just put an adjustable gas block on it and that solved all my problems. I also used to have one of their AR-10s years upon years ago when it was the PSA 10 Gen 2 It was the first palmetto I've ever had and let's just say I had to put in a lot of work to make it functioning but this was over 8 years ago. And lastly I have a dagger which has been 100% flawless for me. The second gun on my list I would literally trust my life on actually It is one of my carry guns.

The double feeding was a huge issue with mine when I put my first 500 rounds through it. Got the gas dialed and it has worked fine the next case I put through it. I have also been only shooting it suppressed with my rc2. In regards to the handguard bolts, I had to use a torch to get the loctite to burn off. I also haven’t had the issue where it chews on the receiver like yours did. It looks like it’s getting chewed up when the rounds stove pipe and get smacked forward by the bolt.

So I have one of the early runs of this firearm, purchased the upper only option just after they were released. This has been my experience so far, so there is a sample size of more than just the one you tested. The first 250 rounds almost did not cycle at all, as the tolerances were so tight and the gun was over sprung for the gas, even at wide open. Manual cycling was needed for the first 50 rounds, then slowly becoming more positively ejecting. I could watch the progression of the break in across rounds 50-150 fired in the prone without stopping. Honestly it was kinda cool to watch the ejection pattern change as the parts began to wear together and break in. Adding suppression helped this process along and after 300 rounds I was able to turn down the gas block settings without adding malfunctions with or without a can. I have used this gun in one class and one defensive shoot with no real notable issues, beyond the average malfunction here or there. All in all close to 2500 rounds total and I would say averaging around 1-2 malfunction per 1000 post break in. 11.3 barrel gives me an average 3 MOA groups with a red dot, which is the max level my eyes can achieve these days. I use elusively Okay E2 surefeed mags, never got down with the plastic ones if that is relevant in any way. HOWEVER, my piston is not loose at all, the barrel did not fall out, the gas block is insanely positive and does not move on it's own, and my locking lugs have little to no wear. The peening over on the bottom rear of the bolt carrier group is a typical AK thing, however AK's see it closer to 10k rounds. All in all you need to return that thing to PSA as I did not have the same experience through 2500 rounds that you did.

It super sucks that the gas block was an issue for you. The thing that I like so much about the Jakl is the fact that you can tune that gas to where it makes the rifle so incredibly smooth, especially when suppressed. So without that, I feel like it would be much less impressive. I feel like the main reliability issues were from the rifle being super overgassed with the can on it. If you were able to slow down the bolt with the gas block like you should be able to, it would run correctly
@theKashConnoisseur
@theKashConnoisseur 2 месяца назад
I'd rather have a barrel with a properly sized gas port from factory, than an adjustable gas block which will open up over time due to wear, and that has a certain propensity to mechanically fail. And yes, gas ports also erode, but since the barrel material is (generally speaking) harder and more wear resistant than the gas block, it's much less of an issue. And of course, no moving parts means less chance of something failing.
@MGMan37
@MGMan37 11 дней назад
@@theKashConnoisseur "I'd rather have a barrel with a properly sized gas port" Properly sized for what though? The demands for suppressed and unsuppressed shooting are not the same.
@theKashConnoisseur
@theKashConnoisseur 11 дней назад
@@MGMan37 it's simple. Stop trying to build jack-of-all-trades rifles that compromise on every point, and focus on purpose built tools. Most people end up leaving their suppressed guns suppressed, be that because of carbon lock or because it really is that much nicer to shoot. So just go with the properly sized gas port from the start, and skip all the compromises.
@MGMan37
@MGMan37 11 дней назад
@@theKashConnoisseur So once again, which size do you choose? Not everybody who buys the gun is going to be using suppressors, and not everybody will not be using suppressors. Also steel vs non steel case concerns. Every size of gas port in any commercial AR is a "jack of all trades" option unless you get yours custom drilled.
@theKashConnoisseur
@theKashConnoisseur 11 дней назад
@@MGMan37 you can get properly sized gas ports from many a rifle builder, so not sure why you think all commercial ARs have the same port size. For instance, a BA Hansen carbine barrel will have a 0.07" port, while a Triarc suppressed carbine barrel will have 'em at 0.052-0.055". There's charts online if you want to learn more. Proper size for an AR, carbine to midlength, unsuppressed, is 0.07-0.08", give or take a few thou depending on who is making the barrel. For rifle length systems, you see 'em around 0.08-0.09" in diameter. Guns built for suppressor use will tend to have smaller ports, around 0.05-0.06" in diameter. As barrel lengths drop below 16", port sizes start gradually increasing due to shorter dwell time and all the associated physics. The numbers vary because of differences in intended use case (adverse conditions demand more gas to remain reliable), variations in spring and buffer weights, variations in final barrel length, and personal preferences.
