Here is a vid of 5029 'Nunney Castle' giving it absolutely everything to get over Hemerdon and Dainton on the return run of "The Cornishman" from Par to Bristol on 10th July 2011. Speed was into single figures for much of the climb up Hemerdon!

Whenever I need my Nunney fix I come back to this. A wonderful demonstration of guts and determination.... and that brilliant sound. Thanks again.

I have to say that these footages of Nunney slogging up Hemerdon and Dainton really made this a fine event, it was such a close call though! While at Dainton I could hear the Castle slogging up the bank and thinking "is she gunna make it??" Pleasure seeing your fine work from on board the train

Hiya. That's a great video you made there. The power and effort were magnificent. Sad that Mr steamforever does not live up to his name. I'm a fan of all steam and I admire the men who designed and built these great machines from all the Big Four Companies and British Railways. Long Live Steam. Right I've had my rant. Your vid is a like. Thanks for sharing.

Great vid, brings back lovely memories of a trip to Plymouth and back with 2 Black Fives, when one was down the pan the other hauled that one and the whole caboodle over the top of Hemerdon at less than walking pace. Would love to see a video of that, was fabulous onboard.

@6024kingedward1 The load (8) was *less* than was allowed in steam days, which was routinely 9, and there has been a case with 10, though 2 of them fish vans but from nearly a standing start (that would have bent your ears!). This performance was not up to those standards - a steady 15 mph is quite feasible with 8 - but obviously there were steaming problems, for whatever reasons, and the crew did well to keep going at all. A very well-produced vid, though.

Unusually it picks up BEFORE the tunnel. They must have done something to improve the performance. I was on a train recently (Voyager) that came to grief here - grip. Had to back back get another train.

(RJ) The gradient eases a little before the tunnel which is more or less level.

Wow!! How much extra was the load than what would have been allowed in steam days? If it were raining It might not have been such a good day!....

Thanks for that, though I don't think Dainton gets steeper than 1 in 38.

@steamforever Cheers,as an LNER man I can't agree with you,but then 60163 could never beat 5029 in a sound battle, actually nothing other than my one and only favourite loco could...even then it only just equals 5029!
