Hey, I'm the guy that asked about favourite musical moments in non-musical shows, and I wanted to pop on here to say thanks for answering my question. I was kinda worried it wouldn't be an interesting question, so I was very chuffed to see you talk about it for a few minutes. Thank you. :) I also wanted to reply because I'm actually one of those people that doesn't like Rayman 3 - in fact, I actually can't stand it. But listening to your thoughts on it gave me a better idea about why I didn't like it, and why other people are so fond of it. I think it might be partially due to how I got into the series: my first Rayman game was the PS2 version of Rayman 2 - Rayman Revolution. This port changes quite a bit from the original game's structure, mainly in that it places the levels within an explorable hub world instead of the linear level-by-level order in most other versions. The way the levels and hub worlds were designed blurred the lines between what was a regular level and what was the hub world, which combined with the game's more melancholic vibes to make for something that's quite unlike anything else. As a result, that particular version of Rayman 2 became MY Rayman, kind of in the same way that Sonic fans who got into the series through the Adventure titles prefer the more story-driven games with multiple playstyles. So when I played Rayman 3 and found it to be a linear, considerably more comedic game, I got frustrated at how much it wasn't like Rayman 2. I felt the lack of a hub world made the game less investible and a bit too modal, and the writing too obnoxious and fourth-wall breaking to enjoy. I finished it a couple of times, but it felt more out of a sense of obligation and an attempt to figure out why it was so well-liked. I never did understand, but much like your Psychonauts video (which I also wrote a long comment about), hearing you talk about 2 and 3 made me consider that the latter is more appealing if the player had experienced Rayman 1 first. I've never properly played Rayman 1, but having played Origins/Legends (which were directed by Ancel) and seeing how they carried the same kind of structure and tone as 3, I'm now thinking that Rayman 2 - especially the PS2 port - might've been the odd one out in the series that I just happened to become obsessed with for a few years. I don't know if that'll make me want to revisit Rayman 3, since I really don't enjoy playing it, but I now have a better idea about why other folks are so fond about it. And if nothing else, having that better understanding is pretty bloody great. So thank you again for being able to show me that, and I can't wait for whatever you put out. (I recognized the yellow trousers in that blurred RPG thumbnail, and I'm stoked to see what you have to say about THAT particular series.) I hope you're doing well, and have a great day! :)

Thank you very much for the response and the excellent question! I find your questions are always very well put and the subject of musicals is always fun to break into any way I can, so it was much appreciated. I absolutely empathise with the whiplash on Rayman 3, though I've still yet to believe that the order of experience always colours the enjoyment. After having just made a video on Monkey Island where the earlier games surprised me and became my favourites even after having liked the 4th as a kid, I'm reasonably confident Rayman 2 would still not sit totally right with me even if I hadn't played 1 and 3. Revolution is definitely one of the fuller ways to experience that game and it was the first version I completed, but even then I still found myself wanting, I don't know that I've ever felt the game in any form (ps1,PC etc) has ever scratched the itch the way 3 did. Perhaps there's still more to say for that sometime in the future...

Honestly, still curious if you'll do a vid going over the Rayman series as a whole, don't know if it's still possible in the pipeline or if it's not happening. It's mostly just curiosity about your thoughts on everything at this point, things like learning your history with the series, thoughts on where it's been going as of late (seemingly doing the best on mobile of all places where that's where the latest 3 games have been made, but still makes me slightly sad), etc.

On the topic of remakes: I want DMC2 remade because right now it's just the bad one but it had a lot of good ideas, but people ignore that, and the only response I ever get is "but it bad". Which Rayman 2 did you play? PS1, DreamCast, PC, Revolution for PS2? Because there are some big differences between them. And I agree with you on Rayman 3. It's underappreciated by Rayman fans.
@BMask
@BMask 4 года назад
I've actually played them all! While there are large changes I still feel generally the same about the game as a whole...I tend to lean towards the Dreamcast/PC version as the original intended default, but I did enjoy many of the additions made in Revolution, and some of the weird off beat additions in the PS1 game, I kind of want them all combined into a complete PC package someday.

@BMask
@BMask 4 года назад
Ahh what a wonderful way to begin. That production of into the woods is my absolute favourite (and much better than the new film they made of it a few years back.) I actually don't know about william Finn, but I'll certainly look it up- in the meantime I can recommend a couple of names to get started on- Marvin Hamlisch, Cy Coleman, Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, Marc Shaiman, Kander and Ebb, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Howard Ashman and Alan Menken, David Zippel, Mel Brooks. Also look up Patrick Wilson singing songs from Brigadoon. Who knew he could do that!?

Maybe the fact that I played Rayman 2 first is clouding my judgement, but I always found it to be more generally impactful than Rayman 3. I do see what you're saying about both games, but 3 always felt to me like it didn't quite know what it was trying to do. Like, it was trying to be a magical adventure, but also a snarky comedy, and also a "badass" combat-heavy game, cuz that's what's "hip with the kidz," right?. It's sort of like if someone like Tomm Moore started making a film, and then at some point in production, DreamWorks got involved and started changing it to fit their mold. In the end, it felt like a collection of elements that are fine on their own, but never quite come together, and the adventure as a whole felt rather fleeting, leading up to the "oh, I guess we're done" ending. Rayman 2, by contrast, drew me in a lot more. There was a sense of looming danger and mystery to that game, one that drove you to explore and fight for the world yet also wonder what was around every bend. "What's in this forest?" "What's in this temple?" "What is beyond........and is it friend or foe?" Aiding this was a palpable feeling of vulnerable loneliness. You had friends that would help you at times, but for the most part, you were on your own, and this coupled with the aforementioned vibes made for a very impactful adventure. I also really liked the choice of "faux speech" as it really helped to make me feel like I was in a totally different world from my own, and also the fact that you could learn about the history of the world the more yellow lums you collected. The fact that Rayman wasn't created by the world's creator, yet shared the same circle symbol that you see in all the temples, made me wonder about what that all meant. Anyways, I'm not sure if others share my views on this game, but I think it managed to hit a mark that not many other platformers, at least 3d, have managed to do. I've waited for a new 3d Rayman game for years, partially just to have one again, and partially in the hopes that it could push forward what this game did, at least in spirit if not directly, since this series is admittedly all over the place. Anyways, sorry for the long-ass comment (heh, ironic. Apologizing for the long comment on a video by the guy that apologizes for long videos).

Curious that you mention Level-5's european influences, as those games (Professor Layton, Inazuma Eleven) have a really big following in Europe. Omg please say you've played Rayman revolution, because it's like Rayman 2: Remastered, only a few years later, but all the levels are much better, expanded and the game is harder with better grqphics. Much more immersive, the hub world instead of a level select adds so much. It's only on PS2 though so many people have missed it. It's really weird because there are 3/4 different versions of Rayman 2. PS1/N64 version, PC/Dreamcast version used for all the re-release and the PS2 version, Rayman revolution

I mean, I disagree that Crash Bandicoot remakes are 1 to 1 remakes (I know that you do not mean this literaly). I prefer playing them with there more consistent controls between games which makes it easier for me to jump from game to game. Some people even complain how these games controls feel different enough and wish that they have just done 1 to 1 transition of controls.Added time trials also makes first two games level design more rewarding to master and the time trials themselves are perfetly done in my opinion. And even when it comes to graphics, I hate the concept that they are improving them. Crash, as PS1 games, looks great. Probably one best looking games in its generation even when compared to a lot of 2d games of that time. The problem, as you said in your video, is how some things such as lighting (god It can be terrible) and how water looks like it clashes with rest of the art style. But those problems are mostly with Crash 2 as it stands (I am not sure how can it feel more rushed then third game) and the rest of the game to me feels better then most stialistic choices done in the mos AAA games in these last couple of years. And at same time, reinventing the wheel is not something you should really do with crash as it standed in 2016. He was in deep slumber, and his stile of 3D platforming was considered outdated. So reinventing the wheel with his formula could have been seen as admiting as "Yeah, he can not work as things stands in this day of age" while forgeting what kind of advantages this stile of gameplay can bring compared to his more open world counterparts (more focused chalenges and better difficulty curve). Now, I understand preferences and all that, and you like when someone does not mess with other artistic vision so they must do something new with same concept(I personally find that kind of view limiting) so I understand it is for everyone (like anything could be). I
