Back in 1963 I was barely 16 years old. At the corner gas station like the old days has stations this old man was getting rid of his old 51 merc coupe and i paid all $80 . I was short $20 so he held the car for me on hold with the $60 and sure enough i came up with the $20 balance after I got paid from my part time job at the grocery store. I've had many cars in my 70 years of life but somehow the story of 51 Merc never ceases to leave my thoughts.....

What Is Even NICER Is To Have A 1949 Mercury Dashboard To Look At When You're Driving. That Have ROUND Gauges, (Instead Of Sweep Gauges), That Can Be Swapped Into The Car, And Modern 12-Volt Gauges Fitted Inside The Original Gauge Holes. Even Though The 2-Door Coupes Look A Bit Better, You Still Have To Bend Over And Crawl Around To Get Into The Back Seat. Where As The 4-Door Sedans Have Really COOL SUICIDE DOOR Openings, And You Can More EASILY Access The Back Seat And Floor To Get People In And Out Of The Car, And Put Groceries And Purchased Items In The Car More Easily Too...

Sweet. The lakesides have to go even though they're period correct. And I don't think the tailpipe tips are period. But it's definitely a nice car. It should be kept original with the only exceptions being the tires and seatbelts. That's what a restoration is. Bringing it back to original.

That is a sweet looking ride I like the 50 Mercury's than the 50 fords . My question is why do the 50 Fords Have Hood Props where the 50 Mercury's don't? they stay up on their own Just a Question I would give one of my Kidneys for that car
@davemckolanis4683

@ Charlie Irvin. The 1949 Mercury Was SUPPOSE TO BE THE FORD Post War Redesign In The Late 40's. But Was Deemed To Be Too Big And TOO HEAVY, Adding To A Higher Cost To Compete With Their Main Competitor Chevy. So Ford's Design Team Came Up With The Cheaper And Lighter Bullet Front Shoebox Design Instead, Keeping The Same 239 cid Engine. With Things Like The Hood Prop Rod On The Ford, Instead Of Springs In The Hood Hinges On The Merc To Assist Opening It. Where As The Mercury Also Got The Longer Stroke 255 Engine, To Help Push Along All That Extra Weight On The Merc. And Owning A 1950 Myself, You Can Instantly Tell The MUCH HEAVIER WEIGHT As Compared To The Light Nimbleness Of The Cars Today. The New Shoebox Ford ALSO Had A Flatter Modern Hood And Straight "SLAB" Sides. Where As The Mercury Still Retained Somewhat Of A Humpy Hood Like A Chevy, But Both Eliminated The Sticking Out Rear Fenders That GM Cars Retained On Their Cars Into The 1950's... I Hope The Information Helps, And You Don't Have To Give Up A Kidney After All...

@ Jason C. You're Absolutely RiGHT. Those "BUTCHERED UP " Mercury's That Some People Call "Customized" Were A Left Over Fad From The Mid 50's. And Are Too Expensive And NOT Selling Very Well Either. Replacing The Grills With LUG Protrusions From A DeSoto, Also Completely RUINS The Look Of The Car. Why Don't The Owners Just Buy A DeSoto To Begin With??? America Fell In Love With The Waterfall Or Toothy "Electric Shaver" Style Grille Look, And The MAJORITY Of People That Go To Car Shows Seem To Prefer The ORIGINAL Appearance Of The Car As It Came From The Factory...

@ King Earl. Sorry Kiddo. Those Flatties Can Be Beefed Up Pretty Well. Like The One I Have With High Compression Heads And Slightly Cammed Up To Stay With The Traffic. Especially If It Has An Overdrive To LOWER The Engine RPM's At Higher Highway Speeds. The Speed Limit Remains At Only 25 To 35 In Town Anyway, 40 To 55 On Two Lane Highways, And 70 On The Interstates That The Flatties Can Keep Up With. Even The 50 Merc That I Have Can EASILY Climb Steep Hills In Second Gear; Where As My 350 Chevy Truck Has To Remain In 1st Gear The Whole Way Up That Same Steep Grade... You've OBVIOUSLY Never Driven An Old Bathtub Merc, To Understand The VAST DIFFERANCE They Are From The HIDEIOUS Looking Plastic Balls They Sell Today, That ANY DUFAS Can Operate Down The Road.
@kingearl2596
@kingearl2596 Год назад
@@davemckolanis4683 Of course you are right, but I live in Europe. Flatheads are burning a lot of fuel, and one Gallon cost 6,8 Dollar here.Early Car builders here built only ohv or ohc engines since 1901. Btw: The lowest Quality of gas in Austria is 95 Octane.
@davemckolanis4683
@davemckolanis4683 Год назад
@@kingearl2596 According To My Knowledge And Wikipedia, There Were SOME EARLY Manufacturing Of OHV And OHC Engines Being Produced During The Early Years Of The 20th Century, But Mostly For More Expensive And Higher Performance Racing Vehicles And Motorcycles In Both America AND Europe. The Flathead Was Cheaper And Easier To Mass Produce For The General Public, And Remain In Both American And European Ford Manufactured Vehicles Until 1953 And 54. Chevy Had It's First OHV V8 In 1917, But It Didn't Last Long. However Their OHV In Line "Stovebolt" 6 Was Used Since 1929. Peugeot Seemed To Be The European Leader With Innovative Auto Technology, And No Doubt Had More Advanced Engines Than We're In The American Markets. Where Even The American G.M. Cars Including Cadillac Were Still Using Flatheads Into The 1940's. But When Oldsmobile Came Out With Their Mass Produced OHV V8 Engine In 1949, (And Higher Compression Engines BEYOND The Typical 6 To 1 Ratios We're Jacking Up The Horsepower In Them), By 1953 The Flatty Days Were Over With, And The Ever Increasing Horsepower Race Had Begun. So I'm Sure You Might Know More About European Engine Designs Than I Care To Concern Myself With. And This Even HIGHER Advanced Engine Stuff Of Today, (Squeezing Maximum Horsepower Out Of 4-Bangers With Turbos And Fuel Injection And Computer Controls), Is Getting Beyond My 70+Year Old Age Grade To Even Want To Care About At All Anymore. Let Alone These Electric Cars That Can Catch On Fire And Burn The Vehicles Parked Next To Them That Even Fire Departments Can't Extinguish. I'm FINE With Driving Pre-2012 Cars That Aren't OVERLOADED With TOO Much Computerization And Distracting Garbage, That Are Plastic Balls That Look EVIL And Absolutely Hideous... As A Final Comment About 95 Octane Gas In Australia; That Would Be SUPER PREMIUM Here In The States. Where Our Highest 93 Octane Is About $4.50 A Gallon Here In The Eastern States. But California Gas Prices Seem To Be About $1.00 MORE Per Gallon For All Octane Grades...

@kingearl2596 Год назад
@@davemckolanis4683 You know really much about engines, like I do. But sir, I live in AUSTRIA, not Australia! It is exactly the opposite, round the world. In Austria we had Steyr, Austro Daimler, Gräf & Stift and many others BEFORE WW1. They all built ONLY ohv or ohc engines. Even Lorries of this time (Fross-Büssing and WAF) had big ohv engines. The car, in wich Kronprinz Franz Ferdinand was murdered (and the first world war began) was a 6 year old Gräf & Stift Double Phaeton, built in 1908. This car is still in running condition in the Heeresgeschichtlichen Museum in Vienna! P.S.: Austrian Researcher were the first white men landing in Australia, so the named it AUSTRIALIA after theyr own land. Austria is documented in the year 996, the red/white/red flag is the oldest in the world.

Too Many Of Those Bathtub Mercuries Are Painted BLACK. Regardless How Shiney The Paint Job Is, They ALL Look Like FUNERAL CARS. Like The Kids PUNK Cars Today Want Everything BLACK Having NO TASTE AT ALL. And That Dragging AS$ Lowering Makes Them Look TIRED With The Bottoms Scraping Going Over Railroad Crossing And Tilted Driveways Too. As I Was Searching For One Myself, I Found A GREEN 50 Merc And Finished Restoring It And REMOVED The Lowering Blocks As Well. YOURS May Be A "SHOW CAR", But Mine Is A Weekend DRIVER That Probably Gets MORE People Looking At It, In A Further BACK Lot Parking Space To Avoid Getting Dinged Up, UNLike What You Must Want To Risk...
