Very helpful as I decide between the 4066 & the 52. I also appreciate your humble, honest presentation style.

My dad just downgraded from a 4052M to a 4044r. More loaded with features, but less HP. Unless you need the PTO HP, go with the less expensive machine. They all have the same frame, similar lifting capacities ect. Mine now has almost 1000 hours with only one shop visit for a emissions sensor. I will say other brands offer more "features" for less money. But JD is known for reliability.

Nice review. It took me 7 months of research before I pulled the trigger. The amount of features on compact and utility is staggering. I went into my JD dealer all set to purchase the 4052R loaded with the understanding that PTO hp is the only reason to go with the 4066R. You are spot on that you will run out of traction LONG before you run out of power. 7 months of research went down the drain when my salesman said he had a 5075e on the lot with a cab and would only have to add a few options to get what I needed for 5k less. SOLD. I wish I had a 2 or 3 series as well as the 5 series gets big on some jobs. But oh boy way more power, and way more loader capability. The 4 series would still be my choice if I didn't get that screamin' deal on the 5. Good balance of power , capability, size, and weight. I also had to forfeit the hydrostatic tranny which I really wanted. Love my rig though. Again, great insight on the tractors' hits and misses. Dan from Montana.
@TKCL
@TKCL 4 года назад
Yes it's always been confusing why the much larger 5 series is cheaper. The 4 series seems to have more bells and whistles, but the 5 series is more capable for larger jobs. The only reason I didn't go with a 5 series is strictly due to the fact that I was not willing to compromise on a hydrostatic drive. The ease and convenience of a hydro tractor is something I just can't live without. I do so much mowing and light loader work that the instant forward, reverse and being able to easily vary my speed is a must.

Hey Daniel! After owning the 5 series for a year, how do you like it? I am between the 4066r and the 5065e, both cab and loader set up. My concerns are the 5 series is too big for daily maintenance but would like to go with 5 series for the initial work load of clearing land when I build. Thanks

Thanks for the review Andrew. I have been a John Deere guy my whole life. Our farm in Iowa is 224 acres and I still have 4 John Deere's. 2 of them are classics that have been on this farm for over 50 years. I bought a Kubota back in 17 because it fit my needs better than the Deeres of that size did at the time. The Deeres look like the engineers sat the operator down in a chair at the factory and built the tractor around him. Everything is designed with the operator in mind. John Deeres dealership network and parts availability is second to none. I buy a couple hundred dollars worth of stuff at my local dealers each year and when I go to any of the local dealers, I won't get both feet in the door before someone gives me a "Hi Gary" shout out. Very good review.
@TKCL

As crazy as it sounds, my biggest turn off with Kubota is that treadle peddle. Other than that, I think they make great products. For all the mowing and loader work I do, I find the separate forward and reverse pedals are far more comfortable for me.

@@TKCL , I got the gear drive. Not a big fan of hydrostatic in tractors. I told my dealer that I have been grinding gears for over 40 years, I guess I can grind them some more. Agree on the treadle pedal. If they made twin touch pedals an option, I bet they would lose the treadle rather fast.

Night and day difference between the 3 and 4 series. A lot more power and stability. If I remember correctly, I believe the cab is the same on both series tractors. Enjoy that new cab tractor, one of the best purchases I've made.

Very good review. Thank you so much for your time. I bought a JD 5055E brand new in 2015. I have 112 acres and my property used to be a camping ground about 40 years ago. So I use my tractor to plow my huge yard in the winter and in the summer I used it to maintain my roads and I use the brush cutter and use the forks from time to time because I have a woodworking business. I used to cut my trees and make my own firewood but now I heat with propane. One of the biggest reason to buy a big tractor was to make firewood but like I said I don’t do firewood anymore. My biggest regret is that my tractor doesn’t have a cab and I freeze in the winter when plowing my yard. I will sell it this summer and buy one with a cab. Not sure yet if I will buy the 4066R or the 5075E. Sounds like the 4066R might be adequate. Also I’m interested in a self leveling loader. Any suggestions?
@TKCL
@TKCL 3 года назад
They definitely offer the self leveling loader on the 4066R. Snow plowing should be no problem for this tractor either. As far as loader lift capacity, the 5 series definitely will lift a lot more, but sounds like that won't be a problem. FYI, I've been able to lift a 1000lbs more than rated on my loader. You will absolutely enjoy the cab, it makes a tremendous difference in the enjoyment of operating in inclement weather. One huge reason for me to get the 4 series over the 5 series was the hydrostatic drive. If you have never operated a hydro tractor, I highly recommend it. It makes the tractor a dream to operate mowing and using the loader. I'd get the 5 series for heavy ground engaging equipment or farm work, the 4 series for mowing and general duties around a hobby farm. You will find the 4 series more nimble too. I think you will be happy with the 4 series with what you described. Hope this helps!
@frenchriversprings
@frenchriversprings 3 года назад
Yes I think your right that the 4 series will be adequate for me. And yes I noticed my tractor is not very nimble and the loader seems too big for my tractor. Thank you soo much for your advice. In the spring I will go see a huge JD dealership 4 hours from where I live and will try the hydrostatic. Cheers 🍻

The right hand door is only for use in emergencies and that’s why there’s no step. It would be difficult to get in and out because of the control panel and the pedals. It’s only an option to escape if you should tip over on the left-hand side. Talk to your dealership as they may be able to figure out a solution to mount a gas track to your door. My dealer installed a short stack exhaust and a 40° throw gas truck instead of a 70° gas track for the back window since my arms are short as well as a couple of tabs on the side panels for easy removal and a couple of brackets and a flexible radiator screen

it was a really good review. And you were talking about how the AC didn't recirculate, and then you started talking about how there are only two speakers. And it hit me. I have been riding on top of an old open station Kubota for like 20 years now. I felt even sadder at that point in time. hahaha

Thanks for taking the time to do this honest review, Mr. Kelly. I've never purchased a tractor before and your insights from real-world experience as a past and current owner of John Deere equipment is much more valuable than any product promo video. I've recently become a land owner here in Michigan and I just finished building a 1/4-mile long road in to where we plan to put our home. I'm primarily interested in pulling a box blade to maintain the gravel drive but our land is heavily wooded and very hilly so the bucket and a set of forks will also round out the duties of moving logs, dirt and large boulders as we harvest some of the trees for milling on site and for firewood. I spoke with our local JD dealer last week and plan to visit a Kubota dealer too. I recently rented a Kubota skid steer and it was a very nice piece of equipment so I'm wondering how their compact tractors compare with similar JD equipment. Do you have any thoughts on this?
@TKCL
@TKCL 3 года назад
I think they are very comparable and you can't go wrong with either one. My biggest turn off with Kubota is the single treadle peddle for forward and reverse. I find it very awkward to use. The other feature I really like on my John deere is that hookup assist. It's so handy being able to operate the tractor from outside instead of jumping up on it back and forth while hooking up. A quick hitch would help this situation with either tractor, but those are not compatible with all equipment. Get the most power you can afford and I highly recommend hydrostat drive for ease of doing most homeowner tasks. Thanks for watching

I have b series kubota much smaller then this..., I think sometimes details of the machine may cause problems down the road. my example is engine oil plug located above bar holding front loader. in order to drain oil you need to make big mess..., otherwise you would love to service your machine more frequently. so my advice is to check for access for all filters, plugs etc. forward reverse on kubota is also a pain. kubota was cheaper, great machine but over the years the diffrence of 1000 or so is not big deal if machine is very practical and masterized in every single detail. for you application I am wondering if 4066r is wide enough, i found those tractors are very powerfull with hydraulics and engine but frame and size does not come along and sometimes it will make a machine too tippy..

I realize this is two years ago, but far as your seat goes - don’t worry about that. I have the older version of your tractor, the 4720 with the self leveling loader and almost all the same features ( minus and DPF ), and I got 1645 hours on mine ( it’s a 2010 model ) and the seat is still perfect. In fact almost all of the tractor is still perfect. I did bend in the mesh on my front grill cause a branch caught it - but it didn’t damage anything. I do like where the battery is located on your 4066 opposed to the 4720 cause mine sits right at the front under the radiator. If you don’t like your hood you should see if the 4720 is a easy swap cause it opens straight up in one piece with the lights and grill. One thing you didn’t touch on at all was the loader and the bucket - Deere’s factory bucket is very flimsy steel. The CX400 loader is supposed to be rated to lift 2500lbs to full hight - it certainly will not lift what it’s advertised for. Mine will lift about 1600lbs, maybe a couple hundred more but definitely not 2500lbs - it can’t lift a full pallet out of the bed of a truck. Overall great review and I’m happy that you like the tractor. I am very happy with mine. Only had to replace my water pump at 1635 hours - knock on wood nothing else has gone wrong with it. Air is still ice cold and other then the 3pth being overly sensitive - it’s a great tractor that I use commercially. I build roads with it pulling a 8 foot box blade, do forestry work with it and plow snow in the winter ( I’m in eastern Ontario Canada ). My only complaint is wish it had a bigger fuel tank.
@TKCL
@TKCL Год назад
I'd strongly suggest you check the stainless inline hydraulic screen on the side of your frame. They are known for plugging and causing hydraulic loss. I've lifted up to 3,000 lbs with mine about 3ft in the air. I can easily lift the rated capacity and over, although I do feel like it's stressing the front axle. Something sounds off with yours.

Nicely done review. Thanks I appreciate it as I was looking at the 4066 and a dealer had a great deal on a 4052R with cab that someone ordered all loaded up and failed to take delivery. Has electro 2rd function with 2 additional remotes, power beyond, top and tilt, air seat, deluxe grill, 3 point down pressure, 4 in one bucket etc. Far more options than I would have ordered and the deal was too hard to pass up. I wondered if I was missing the additional horsepower as I had a 4610 previously. It was good to hear your view on that and I’ve found it to have plenty of power. I really like the tractor and have noticed the same things you pointed out. BTW the top and tilt feature (that I wouldn’t have ordered) is very handy and couldn’t be without the 4 in one bucket. Thanks again, and I’ll be checking your other videos.

I seriously considered a 5 series, they were actually cheaper than my 4 series. The number one reason I didn't get a 5 is because of the lack of hydrostatic drive. I mow a minimum of 8 hours a week in the summer and nothing beats the convenience of hydro for mowing or loader work. Instant smooth forward and reverse with no clutch or shifting is a must for me.

Great tractor review and beautiful tractor! Horsepower is impressive for subcompact. I enjoy your mentioning of detail for us viewers. Not up to date on the newer series of Deere’s or the technology. I prefer the older John Deere tractors and equipment, but we all still support the brand. Unfortunately I’ve never ran a tractor with an enclosed cab. Can you still hear your equipment run? You know to detect a problem with an implement or anything? Just curious about that. This 3020 John Deere was my late fathers. He bought it new in 71 so I’ve only run an open station tractor and used to hearing the equipment. We dairy farmed in the south Louisiana heat with this open station tractor so a cab would’ve been great! Great video, y’all take care! 👍

OUTSTANDING VIDEO! I'm looking to buy a 2017 4066R with 1145 hrs. An 80 yr. old man bought it new and is wanting to sell. A couple of the outside cab lights need replacing. The interior is equivlant to yours. Water comes out of the AC vents somewhat. He says when the filter needs changing that happens. I was hoping there was no leak in the cab. There was none that I could see. One more question is what would be a good price on this tractor? It has 6' frontier brush hog, 6' loader, and 6' TRS box blade that doesn't even have the paint scratched on it yet. No dents, it has been parked outside. I would appreciate you or anyone else that could help me with what it would be worth.

Sadly I can't even take a guess as to what's a fair price. The market is so out of whack right now due to covid aftermath that things are going for far more I could imagine. I'd look into the water in the vents, I've never experienced that before.

@@TKCL I agree with a lot you said, having a 2305 all the way up to a 9570R in the barn, I have some deere in my veins :) I originally was going to get a 5055E just for the price point, but decided on the 4R for the hydro transmission. I have two young boys and the hydro would be a easy learn for them. I am super curious if the 2020 will have a gas strut for the passenger side door or not. Every video I watched tonight on the 4066 the owners complained about that. I do believe the only reason they put the passenger door on the compact tractors is for safety in case of a roll over. Thanks again!

Enjoyed the review! We are getting out of farming with hay and cattle, so a smaller tractor like this could be in my future. The fender mounted controls for 3 point are pretty common on larger tractors, and they are very nice to have. I'm surprised that JD is one of the few to put it on the smaller machines, but I love that it's there. I am sort of curious if the brakes pedals on the LH side of the steering column ever trip you up and you're trying to get in/out of the cab. I looked at one of these in person a couple of weeks ago and it looked like the brakes would catch your feet every time. The purposely bent parking brake handle also seems rather goofy, but I get why they made it that way. Appreciate the in depth review!

Thinking about a 4066R but read a comment in another video about how poorly the R model (and M model) bush hog due to inadequate cooling that requires frequent stops to blow out intake grills. Just wondered if you've had any similar experiences. I know you said that you mow a lot. Wasn't sure about bush hogging.
@TKCL
@TKCL 3 года назад
Nope, and when I mow it's up to 8 hours at a time. A few breaks here and there for lunch and something to drink. Now with any tractor, I strongly suggest that you always blow the radiator fins out after heavy mowing. Mine has yet to ever require a cool down after two years of heavy use.

Thanks for the videos. Keep it up! I am looking at purchasing a new 3046 with cab. You said that it brings in fresh air using the A/C all the time, no recirculating option. So I am a HVAC tech. I know nothing about tractors, but looking at the 3046R, their is an air filter at the top rear window on the inside. If this is the case and their is no other air intake, then this would basically be a 100% recirculation except any air leakage. Is there vents on the outside of the cab that suck air in as well that you know for a fact? It would surprise me if it did since tractors make so much dust. It would stop any filter up on the outside quickly. Can you confirm please?
@TKCL
@TKCL 4 года назад
There is a tiny foam filter in the cab for very minimal recirculation. The majority of the air comes through the outside back of the cab through a main filter. It requires frequent cleaning and eventual replacement due to the outside elements. There is no damper or true recirculation option for these tractors, a big miss on John deeres part. Watch this video and you will see where I clean the AC filter. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-oZE2eYMZ-Rk.html

Great review thank you.. I currently own a 3720 with cab and I am currently looking at upgrading to 4066R. I love the 3720 but it feels very tippy on uneven ground. How is the 4066 in comparison?
@TKCL
@TKCL 4 года назад
Well coming from a 3720 myself I can tell you that the 4066 is noticeably more stable. They also offer wheel spacers for even more stability. With that said it's still a compact and not going to be as stable as a 5 series. However I don't want the width of a 5 series and I'm very pleased with my 4066. I think it's an excellent tractor, amazing amount of power but still can get in right places. I couldn't imagine mowing how I do with a larger tractor. Ask anything you like about it, I'll respond.

I wonder if there is a way to make the air conditioning recirculate? I have a 2038r its a great machine but thinking of upgrading to the 4066r with cab but the air recirculation is something I’m debating on living in south Alabama. I heard the 5 series does recirculate and it will freeze you it blows so good but the 4 series don’t. But the 5 series I would need a gooseneck trailer and upgrade my truck to haul it which I really don’t want to.
@TKCL
@TKCL 4 года назад
It does recirculate ever so slightly through a foam filter, but it's nothing like a vehicle with a damper and full recirculation. I live in Florida, extremely hot and humid. It was 105 on the heat index last week and I was comfortable in the cab. It definitely didn't freeze me out, but made it tolerable. On anything but a 95 degree or more day, it's fine and I don't even run it on max. They could have done better, but it's not a deal breaker for me. I wouldn't let that make you get a larger tractor if you don't need it, don't forget the 5 series does not offer hydro if that's what you want. Non hydro was a major deal breaker for me in wanting a 5 series.
