Though Ryan and Jake seem to agree on many things, most of their friendship consists of disagreeing about everything. In this episode, they tackle the question from Ryan Stokes: “What scope magnification is recommended when hunting out to 800 yards, but you practice with your hunting rifle out to 1k yards? Join the conversation are you a high or low-power shooter?

Scopes for me is higher range. 5x25x56 or 4.5x28x52. Perfect range of adjustments.

Low power aiding confidence in your wobble zone is very real. Professional archers spend most of their careers mastering methods to avoid target panic induced by that wobble. It absolutely eases the stress on the mind. I will also never go back to a bino above 8x if I free handing. Better FOV and usable with an elevated heart rate. If I’m close enough to use the bino for a more precise look, the difference between 8 and 10 with good glass is splitting hairs. Like Ryan said, if you want to find something you can’t see in a landscape, it’s all about picking up movement. A wider FOV and less wobble is best for that. Plus 8s are more versatile if you’re in the timber and have to peer through the clutter of trees.

I use a 5-25x56, and generally keep it on 6-8 hiking around the woods and mountains in case I happen to bump something and need to get on target quickly. However, when shooting at something, whether at an animal or at the range, I've always cranked it up all the way up. This was a great discussion, and it's motivated me to start practicing shooting in those mid-magnification ranges more. I could definitely see the benefits of doing so. Anyway, keep the great content coming...this has turned into one of my favorite podcasts!

I just picked up my first 6mm primarily for NRL-Hunter. It's the rifle I plan to bring to class this summer and I just ordered all of my 6mm stuff and a rail from UM. What practical difference is there between the 6UM and the 6CM for hunting? Assuming we are shooting the same projectile where would my cutoff be when compared to the 6UM?

love the ramblings haha 27min in and low mag works for hunting best i have found. Cant use high magnification in the hills between low light, clouds and heat mirage im hardly ever over 15x zoom even on my nx8

I went by your shop yesterday. Where were you two? 😂I held the RokStok. It Rokked!! Also thinking about ordering a 7 saum + P w a RokStok. I think that would be Kool gun. Not very many of those down here in Southern Idaho. I have a short action magnum action. ( 700 footprint). Your thoughts you two??

I'm sooo not a fan of tika recoil lug or lack there of I should say. What a chincy design that is. Great action and barrel . There accurate as hell but the plastic me mags , plastic stocks, terrible recoil lug design just turns me away every time. I buy weatherby weather guard bronze rifles, n those are built correctly like a rifle Shoud be. The tried n true mauser style recoil lug, square bottom receiver, not this round bar stock cheap crap. There built The old school way!
