➪ To clean out your rain barrel use baking soda and vinegar! This eco friendly DIY tutorial will show you how to freshen up your rain catchment and water storage containers. A bleach free option will remove algae and sanitize the bins. Rain barrels require annual disinfecting and the perfect time to do this is at the end of each gardening season. I have 2x 55 gallon plastic barrels that I use to harvest rain water.

That "debris" at the bottom of your rainbarrel is liquid gold to your garden plants! Save it in a bucket or just dump it in your garden!

This was such a helpful video. Your instructions and recommended products (baking soda and vinegar) worked like a charm. I ended up getting a brush that had a hose attachment and it made it easier and quicker to clean my barrels out. Thanks for creating this video!

I live in S texas and my rain barrel water has turned a little brown. Not sure if pigeon poop or what not. Ideas? Is there a good way to kill stuff so I can use it for vegetable gardening or is this considered unsafe?

I would use it in the gardens. My region gets an algae bloom once a year in summer and the pollen also turns the bin water yellow. I use it. If it comes from nature, bird poop and all, what is the difference in water form or natural? That’s my thinking anyway! If you’re concerned, do a test on a patch of your lawn or one potted plant etc! One of my bins is very dirty right now. I’m going to dilute it with hose water then pour it out!

Help! MY rainbarrel water smells really bad for the first time Ever …like sulfur/rotten eggs. Any ideas why? I did a cleaning last season. Thx!

The smell is most likely from an algae bloom / bacterias in the bin. Could be different weather or temp than last season. Dump and clean and refill!

The first bin from Home Depot. The second from Walmart as a combo kit that included the rain barrel and this compost bin ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ZsrweU3XlJY.html that was on sale at the same price as the solo bin! Same brand.
