56 Chrysler Windsor Wagon with 354 HEMI - Ran when parked. Vegas to Sioux Falls adventure Part 1

California Wagon bought sight-unseen. Had shipped to Vegas where my dad also lives with the plan to see if we could get it road worthy in 100 degree heat and back to Sioux Falls. The HEMI sat for 5 years with a full tank of gas and a bad fuel pump. 66 year old car - No problem..
After later inspection w/ valve covers off, etc it appears this engine was rebuilt some time ago then just sat..
By the way - I'm looking for the correct kingpin bushing set. Seems there are several but the wagon and Imperials used one configuration which I'm having trouble finding.

When I was a kid we had a ‘55 Windsor 2-door for a time. The only problem I remember is that, according to Dad, it had aluminum headers and a few times it quit on us on the road after coming to a stop. He said is was vapor lock and we just waited 10-minutes and it restarted. I did not have this compulsion at the time, but I wish I would have had the foresight to have at least ONE of these cars salted away for “when I get grown up.” (I am 71 but still not sure about being grown up.)

I too have a 1956 Chrysler. To be more specific, it is an Imperial limousine which I got when I was 16. It was "the" party car in those days. 50 years later, I still own it. The grand-kids love taking rides in it. For me, it was no surprise you got 'er fired-up, after all, it is a hemi. One thing to watch out for is the horn ring. Extremely valuable now...and easy to break. I have been through a few of them.

Good luck with your Windsor !! Like Dennis before me, I also had a 55 Windsor And traded it away for another car and have regretted it for the last 55 years. The only trouble I had with mine was I rear-ended another car and had a different color front end on it. Wish I could find another one. Always started in the cold winter days of PA back then..

My dad purchased a 1955 Chrysler New Yorker 300 Station Wagon from the Stan Sears estate sale. Mr. Sears owned a Chrysler dealer ship in Seattle, WA. and was a hydroplane racer back in the 50's. He special ordered this vehicle so that his wife would be able to keep up with his hydro on the floating bridge on lake Washington in order to relay his speed via two way radio. Loved that car and was to young to have an opportunity to drive her. Yes it was a hemi.

I love old Chrysler vehicles. The Chrysler Windsor Assembly Plant currently assembles mini-vans and Pacificas. I spent a lot of time working at the plant installing the new assembly equipment the decked the body and the chassis to these new vehicles. I made many friends of the Chrysler employees who worked there for many years and hear many of the stories of the 50's and 60's vintage vehicles. I referred to the over assisted power steering as "Chrysler No Feel" oiser steering. It was standard for many years on the big Chrysler vehicles.

That glazing or coating inside the intake looks like something I came across in an engine i bought some years back. Turns out it was that liquid fuel tank liner some people use to seal rusty fuel tanks. It had coated the intake valves and craped up the carb pretty bad. The guy I bought it from latter told me it had coated the fuel lines and he had problems with clogged filters.

I had a 55 Windsor, and never realized that 56 was the beginning of the 12 volt systems. (hand / forehead) Same engine as here but a 2 bbl carb. Dash was almost identical as well. Gear shift was a lever to the right of the steering wheel. (similar to today's Caravan) My first thought on that extra noise under the hood was dry generator bearings or rusty belt pulleys. That gen had oil caps so put a few drops in there for good measure. BTW, they were famous for the "one finger" power steering. The girls loved that!
@grillsandaxlegrease3578
@grillsandaxlegrease3578 Год назад
Yes, the power steering is amazing. I just learned it came directly from Chryslers work on WWII aircraft just as the HEMI did. The power steering box was way overbuilt. Same tech used on large aircraft. That noise stopped when I replaced the idler pulley later on. But I need to shim it just a little..

@@grillsandaxlegrease3578 ... BTW, if you want a good laugh, look up the hemi powered air-raid sirens of the 50s. Supposedly the loudest ever man-made noise at the time. Some reports say it's well over 140 db and even pushing 160 db depending on the standard they use.

I have to applaud your knowledge of these cars. Either you researched the heck out of them after you found this one, or you've owned them before. There are other guys on RU-vid that have done Will it Run on early Hemi's and they mostly just stumble their way through them. I thought your observation that it is more like a modern SUV than a modern sedan was very important. This was just before station wagons started offering what we'd now call third row seating. I think Chrysler earlier models , like 1946 to 52 that were "8 passenger sedans" with extended passenger compartments and wheelbases and two jump seats ahead of the rear seat also compare to SUV's of today. I have a 52 Saratoga project. Also a 331. It is still about 10 percent incomplete and needs drive train repairs for what is there. It has the Semi Automatic Fluid Drive transmission which is a whole lot different from all Powerflite and newer transmissions. There is nobody doing those transmissions on RU-vid. Not correctly at least.

When you pull the carb off make sure not to put a rag in the intake that way when you drop screws and bolts down the the intake it will clean out the pistons and cylinder walls and combustion chambers! I will also make the engine run better and even pick up some MPG .. Also make sure not to pull the plugs and fill the cylinders with Marvel or ATF before cranking, that way you will bust a ring when it hits the ridge or rust in the cylinders and score the cylinders with the dry rings and pistons . When pieces of rings and pistons blow out your exhaust driving down the road you will know you have your engine cleaned out @ Please mount a Go Pro in the rear of the car so we can see the chunks blow out the back ! Your Tech Tip for Today 😛😛😛😛😛😛😛😛
@grillsandaxlegrease3578
@grillsandaxlegrease3578 Год назад
All good points and I thank you for that!! I did have a rag when I left for the day - but not working at my own garage under pressure so things got skipped during the day. I forgot the Marvel but the prior owner in CA assured me it was kept dry (Oaji, CA) where it was used and stored.. On a hemi when you pull the plugs oil floods into the cyl anyway by design. Bit I suppose one could use a transmission fill tube to get it down there.. But I do like to spray a special firearms oil that breaks down carbon and rust at an amazing rate - just forgot it on this trip. I may rescue a Desoto sitting for 15 years so if you see Marvel that's a shout out to you..

@@grillsandaxlegrease3578 May I make another suggestion ? When you run across these engines or any engines for that matter that have sat for a long time take the time to pull the plugs and oil them on all engine let it sit over night if possible and let it soak while its soaking you can do your fuel system , ignition etc work on other aspects of the car. The following morning with the plugs still out crank the engine over and pick up the oil and get the engine pressurized with oil pressure, You now have pressurized oil to all the bearings and components of the engine and will save yourself engine damage dry firing and engine . The gun oil is a good idea i have heard great things about it , But yeah oil and spin , oil and spin every motor the next car just think oil and spin. Dont crank and engine dry even for 30 seconds it will score the rings and cylinder walls , It is very bad for it Thanks for the reply I hope you got a good deal on the old girl like I said I love it @

I do not believe it is possible to put hemi heads on a polyspherical engine. It is more likely that someone installed a complete himi engine and transmission from a New Yorker to replace the original engine. The chrome ring on chrome arms that spread out from the center of the steering wheel is the horn ring. You press on the outer end of the chrome arms. Do not push down hard on the top of the chrome ring or the bottom of the chrome ring. If you do, you may crack the pot metal the horn ring is made from (I had a '56 Windsor myself years ago and that happened to me). The horn rings are just about unobtanium. Most all of them have been broken over the years.
@grillsandaxlegrease3578
@grillsandaxlegrease3578 Год назад
I'm in the Forward Look forum and all those guys say that was the trick back in the day - Hemi heads on the Poly - BUT you had to transfer the pistons too or you will have low compression. Besides the block number matched the vin exactly. That was the first thing I had my dad check before I came down. Now for Dodge and DeSoto that may be so.. The ring's center (under the cap) is broke already (I didnt do that) so if you push on the ring - even with your thumb on the outside, the whole thing falls off. But it looks like I can repair that part.
@Mike_Collins392
@Mike_Collins392 Год назад
Chrysler 331 poly and 331 hemi are the same blocks , 354 poly and 354 hemi are the same blocks . The Dodge engines ( within the Dodge family ) are similar and I don't remember the displacements of these. DeSoto never had a poly ( edit - early poly ) . The Plymouth 318 poly ( A Engine ) never had hemi twin , the 392 hemi never had a poly twin. There are specific interchanges within the series but that is the basic rough overview . All of them are fantastic in my book.

Can ANYone tell me how I can get a car that STILL can drive during an EMP ( ElectroMagneticPulse ) which would knock off our electric grids ? I understand 1. There is a certain year that ends this allowability. 1974 ??? What year ? 2. You can turn your car into a Faraday cage whatever that means. 3. I can add more later but this and other point cars would run. And think of it this way - 99% of all cars will be stuck so that 10 million cars with fresh gasoline waiting for you! As for a year.. And I did call around to see if they could get me in.. What most people do is have the car towed in the first place. But then you wouldn't have material for a video. I had a boat tank and did drive it home. You have to wait for the next episode.. But it turned out it was the kingpin bushings. It was all over the road over 60 MPH. I've done this many times before even driving a Corvair truck from IN, to NY then back to TX sight un-seen even breaking down on the Chesapeake bay bridge (in the tunnel), doing an engine swap in VA before getting back home.. BUt the mountains in Utah and 100F deg were not a good idea.

Its not anything Poly, its a Hemi as it was off the reduction line. You could have poured a bit of gas into the carb and tried to get it to fire..That glaze it simply from the dribbling gas, its varnish.

Most overused and misused term.. Sight Unseen. This means NO pics, NO photos.. UNSEEN in any manner
