Part II - The 1956 Chrysler Windsor (Town and Country) Wagon arrived not running in Omaha. So glad I took along a spare starter although the wrong one (62 Chrysler). Turned out the old commutator pads were far gone.
Avoiding long 6% grades in the Rockies (compression braking on unknown trans) and 100F+ desert, I'd drive this car any distance in the current condition across the plains so I had it shipped to the other side.
I should make an additional video of peoples expressions when you pull in to a gas station in this wagon.
Note: I had a LOT of fun with this one. To keep the video reasonable I had to cut a lot out. When I reached Sioux City I had to do a couple repairs - the starter bolts came loose, the new cranking 4GA wire hit the exhaust (didnt short thankfully) but one of the wires (old cloth) to the regulator came apart almost shorting (replaced).. Minor stuff but caught before becoming big issues. The brakes worked great as well as engine acceleration under load.
The cowl vent worked better than having the windows open.
Stiff suspension so driving is similar to driving a 60's international Travel-All.
Hats off to individuals in the Forward Look Forum where I received a LOT of good tips and advice before the trip.
Continuing with the Mopar line I may consider trade for a 64-65 Valiant, Earlier Fury, Barracuda or other w/ the Slant 6. A solid sleeper daily driver.
