Part II - The 1956 Chrysler Windsor (Town and Country) Wagon arrived not running in Omaha. So glad I took along a spare starter although the wrong one (62 Chrysler). Turned out the old commutator pads were far gone.
Avoiding long 6% grades in the Rockies (compression braking on unknown trans) and 100F+ desert, I'd drive this car any distance in the current condition across the plains so I had it shipped to the other side.
I should make an additional video of peoples expressions when you pull in to a gas station in this wagon.
Note: I had a LOT of fun with this one. To keep the video reasonable I had to cut a lot out. When I reached Sioux City I had to do a couple repairs - the starter bolts came loose, the new cranking 4GA wire hit the exhaust (didnt short thankfully) but one of the wires (old cloth) to the regulator came apart almost shorting (replaced).. Minor stuff but caught before becoming big issues. The brakes worked great as well as engine acceleration under load.
The cowl vent worked better than having the windows open.
Stiff suspension so driving is similar to driving a 60's international Travel-All.
Hats off to individuals in the Forward Look Forum where I received a LOT of good tips and advice before the trip.
Continuing with the Mopar line I may consider trade for a 64-65 Valiant, Earlier Fury, Barracuda or other w/ the Slant 6. A solid sleeper daily driver.

When I was travelling thorugh Oregon I ran into a 56 Chrysler New Yorker 4d with original paint (also green metallic), remade interior and absoluely rustfree. I live in Europe and I am a GM guy. But I really wanted the car. The owner had owned a car shop but was in Florida at the time. He was obviously retired. I called him up and tried to negotiate a deal with hime. The car stood outside and I even saw the car on google earth. He wanted 5000$ for it and I was willing to pay that. (This price tag was on the car when I saw it). But this guy did not react anymore. Some people prefer their cars to deteriorate rather than handing them over in time. Maybe it is still sitting there. What a shame! I saw a clip with Rock Hudson transporting a Christmas tree in a 56 Chrysler Wagon. It was a car cool enough for a celebrity. Nice vehicle, congratulation!

Wow! thanks for the story.. I'm pulling the tank to get it refurbished and at the same time will neutralize the surface rust in the spare tire area and under the tank area. I really want to make this a dependable one mainly bacause you don't see Chryslers/Dodge's from this year at all. Stay tuned - I did find a DeSoto I may pick-up..

I'd really like to see this car in a deep burgundy color (all over, door jambs, engine bay, rear hatch inside and out, doors, everything) with a good amount of metallic flake in it, and have every piece of trim removed, polished to a perfection, along with the original hubcaps, and with everything reinstalled it'd look amazing. I'd also yank the entire drivetrain, and I would really scrub, degrease, wire wheel and brush the entire thing, paint the entire engine and trans in that factory light green, have some custom fabricated long-tube headers made for it, a really nice custom dual 2.5" exhaust with some Flowmaster or Borla mufflers, a custom two-piece intake manifold with multi-port fuel injection with individual injectors per cylinder and fuel rails, and then I would adapt a 70mm throttle body to work with the original gas pedal, and I'd get a standalone fuel management system for it to run a multi-port fuel injection setup. Obviously you'd have to install an in-line fuel pump or figure out how to mount an in-tank pump, but that car would be a real cruiser and any real car enthusiast would LOVE it anywhere it went because of how unique it is. I'd wipe that car with a diaper every day.
@grillsandaxlegrease3578
@grillsandaxlegrease3578 Год назад
Wow! Good stuff! The in-tank pump on this would be easy as you have access to the top of the tank though this hatch in the back. The tank is a sideways "L" shape. Manifold flow on these are excellent so access to injector ports wouldn't be much of an issue. The only issue is on the drivers side - not a lot of space for pipes but the stock manifold is actually better flowing than any Ford design I've seen.

The starter solenoid performance can be improved by cleaning & polishing the internal contacts. Remove from the car and carefully bend the folded over tabs of the metal cover until the cover is free. Remove the cover and you will find that you have good access to the contacts. Use a fine sandpaper, say 220 grit or smaller, to clean & polish the contacts. Then replace cover and fold over the tabs that hold it in place. Clean the contact tabs on the outside of the solenoid before re-installing in the car. Add a little silicone grease to help keep the external contacts from corroding. Have fun!

The '56 Imperials had the same engine mated with the 3-speed cast-iron Torqueflite transmission. The Powerflite transmission in the Chrysler New Yorker and Windsor may be difficult to find replacement parts for these days, but the same can be said for the Torqueflite transmission parts. It might be a good idea to locate replacement parts for the Powerflite and keep them on hand. The '55 & '56 Chryslers had good handling due to sway bars on the front suspension. With new king pins installed in the front suspension you will find the overall handling is very good. Some people did not like the very light steering that Chrysler had with their Constant Effort Power Steering system, but once you get used to the light feel control is excellent. It is possible to drive the car with one finger, although I always kept both hands on the steering wheel.
@grillsandaxlegrease3578

Joe you are spot on except for one thing. The Powerflite was STANDARD on the Imperial Until 1/1/56. Then the cast iron Torqueflite came in. With the same final drive ratio (3:54) that imperial was fast. How do i know this? My dad bought a 56 Imperial and took delivery Christmas eve 1955. And yes it was a Powerflite.

I have a motors manual that covers that year if you need info. I've worked on more 1950s Chryslers than you can shake a stick at. Also there is a special procedure to adjust the brake shoes properly. Another thing gl5 is a fine oil except that it can attack early brass compositions in older vehicles I found that out the hard way by destroying a CJ5 transmission accidentally. The transmission requires type A fluid which is available through O'Reillys.
@rupe53
@rupe53 Год назад
you can also get GL-4 on Amazon. I got some for my 64 Corvair van. BTW, there shouldn't be any brass in a rear end. I got mine for the transmission because of the syncros.
@grillsandaxlegrease3578
@grillsandaxlegrease3578 Год назад
Thanks for the offer! I have a new respect for all things Chrysler. I really want a 36-39 Plymouth. Also looking at a 56 Desoto now. The fluid stuff is what I do for a living. The GL5 in needed in the diff but Amsoil has one specific GL5 (Product code ALM) for transaxles (Corvairs for example) which will not harm yellow metals. Yes a GL4 shoudl be used in all those manual boxes. But as for Type A - yes, but a quality Dexron III will not cause any issues as it had to be designed to allow backward specifications of Type A. Now that said, some brands will cause harm because they are no longer built to the same quality standards. I read about the floating brakes but thankfully have not had to adjust them yet. I did get a yowl for the big springs.. The last guy didn't tell me but taking off the drum all these parts were replaced recently. That was a BIG Relief. I do have the Chrysler manual but thank you! You wouldn't happen to have the Desoto one would you?

@grillsandaxlegrease3578
@grillsandaxlegrease3578 Год назад
Yes - I believe I said that in Part I - it was a POLY 331 but a while back someone put on the hemi heads and domed pistons. The block is the correct number matching block.. 354 or 331 the Chrysler blocks were the same 100%, water pump, etc for 56.
@chipieal
@chipieal Год назад
Interestingly, That is the wrong engine for a Windsor. It should have had a 331 C. I. poly. Someone obviously either ordered it from the factory (which does not make sense since you could order A New Yorker wagon With the 354) Or swapped it out. All in all the Powerflite and the 354 hemi make an tremendous combination.. Why not use something to get the fog out of the paint? I think this would make the body pop. Try looking under the back seat ( in the springs) for a build sheet (broadcast sheet) if the hemi was ordered from the factory this would make this rig super ultra rare as opposed to just rare.
@grillsandaxlegrease3578
@grillsandaxlegrease3578 Год назад
I thought the same and discussed this in the Forward Look forum before I bought it. I cover this in part I. But it is a numbers matching block. It was and still is a 331 poly but some time ago perhaps 20 years ago or more someone did put the HEMI heads on with the needed domed pistons. That was one of the first things I checked when I arrived in Las Vegas (Video Part I). I also found out it was Impossible to order this with the HEMI or at least the historian over there said it never happened according to records. I did look for a build sheet. The back seats flip over for the wood deck so I'd have to take that paneling off but I may do that.. I'm thinking if I keep it can I tackle the floor pan work. Never did that before.

But I'd like to. I do need to teach myself welding. That's something I plan to do soon so I can address floor pans, etc. The damage on this wagon is very minor thankfully. The rust came from the inside out (possible open window and heater core). I'm currently looking for the kingpin bushings or I can have them made.

Never remember seeing a 56 Chrysler wagon. Where were you at in Omaha? I recognized the interstate, which looked like I 29 east of Omaha? You have some auto electric skills to rebuild your own starter. It's harder to find people who rebuild starters and alternators, let alone generators. Great solid looking car. Keep us posted if you make repairs and restoration. You may have a better investment than an EV there, since I believe EV's will prove to make transportation more expensive and more complicated. Keep those gas powered vehicles running; they may make a major come back.

I didn't think you could mix synthetic and DOT-3 brake fliud(?) I worked with a gent for 35yrs and always flushed his '28 and '51 Packards with green rubbing alcohol. And then back with DOT-5 synthetic. Never had a problem. And these cars would sit for YEARS! And run the Amsoil 100:1 2 cycle in the gas tank. Or diesel fuel mixed with 87oct gas.
