It is indeed an original. Chassis CSX3285. Owned by Ernie Nagamatsu and driven by his son in the movie. Ernie is sitting in the passengers seat in the movie. Ernie is a hobby racer to this day! A very nice man too I might add!
This scene gives me goose bumps everytime,no matter who won the race, the star car in this show, still and always will be (THE 1957 CHEVY) I get off on my 57 chevyz!!
If that aint the baddest 57 i dont know what is/ Mini tubbed blown nice yellow no hood. I wasn't even that crazy about 57's till i seen this one , I love 55's too! I love hollywood nights that movie is a classic!
Cars back then actually looked fast too. There were not quiet like today's cars. They made a lot of noise even stock. and the front end bounced or jumped with the suspension. the wheels screeched.
That 57 sounds so sweet when racing the Cobra when he shifts gears...awesome car. Popular Hot Rodding should've left that car as is in a museum. Weld wheels don't look as good. Cragar SS with spinners is the look for that machine....
The engine was blown on the 57 while filming this scene, you can see the smoke and fluids around the :45 mark. Great looking car, the nicest 57 I've ever seen, not overdone, just nice.
Danza drove both of these cars before the movie was shot. He said the '57 Chevy would of smoked the Cobra, and he had to take it easy off the line for the purpose of this scene.
The Bel-Air is a dedicated drag racer and the Cobra is a track racer. The Chevy would toast the Cobra in a drag race but on a circuit AC Cobra is king. So all the commenters above are showing their ignorance.
@@mrHoppedupford He did drive it,and missed a shift and damaged the engine. Look from about 40 seconds to 45 seconds..you can see the oil and antifreeze blow aver the top of the car
The Cobra is CSX 3285, An honest to goodness real 427 Big Block Cobra. And it's being driven by it's actual owner at the time with his son in the passenger seat! How cool is that? "You want my car in the movie? I'm driving it!" LOL!
@@insulman100 The FE is a big block and has always been considered a big block. Why don't you think the FE motor is a big block? It started as a 332 back in the late 50's just like the Chevy big block started out at 348 back in '58.
@@alhopkins185 technically it's not but if it makes you feel better the FE is a big block happy now 1958 Chevy 348 bore spacing 4.840 1958 Chrysler 350 bore spacing 4.800 1958 ford MEL 383 bore spacing 4.900 1958 Ford FE 332 bore spacing 4.630 sorry but the MEL was fords big block in 1958 1968 the FF was fords bb I've ask before I'll ask again show me 1 FORD add calling an FE a bb Mercury called an FE a big scorching 428 but not a bb . A big block technically must have a bore spacing of 4.800 or greater but call it what you want a lot of people call an engine with a blower super charged but they're also technically wrong
@@insulman100 Lol, A big block is a factory bore over 4.500. Motortrend articles refer to the FE as a big block. It has nothing to do with Ford ads. I know that big block appears to be more of a Chevy fan boi thing. That's fine. We'll just call the 332-428 Fords an FE engine. But I do enjoy my 6 spd 5.0 Coyote Mustang.
@@alhopkins185 Actually I'm Pontiac man and Pontiac engines are not big blocks BTW going by your definition no FE is a big block 4.500 bore really? I worked in a machine shop for 30 years I can't remember not 1 passenger car or light truck engine with a 4.5" bore the 429/460 have a 4.36 bore the largest car engine I remember working on was a Cadillac 500 I can't remember but its bore was smaller than the 460 the Detroit big 3 agreed on the 4.800 or greater bore spacing including Ford Motortrend or anyone else can have their own definition of a big block if they want but technically an FE is not a big block as far as Ford ads it had a lot to do with it because of false advertising claims (the big block claim was a selling point )and as you said an FE is an FE the early FEs weren't a very good performance engine but after Ford figured out the oiling system they were hard to beat
@jamesjdb Also, Shelby never elected to put a 428 in the Cobras. That was a Ford decsion and the 428s were NOT built by Shelby. They were shipped complete. The 289s, and 427s were reworked by Shelby. The public was actually not happy to find out they had a SCJ and not a W code. That better research ? We do agree on the Tigers. But I'll take a Griffo anyday.
I read in PHR Tony Danza missed a shift and blew the engine. oh and The doors, front fenders and trunk are glass. plus there almost is no interior. They Removed the race seat and put normal buckets in it, for the movie.
Getting a kick out of some of the know it all's in this comment section, everyone's a classic car expert, meanwhile there's a camry in their garages, and some of them cant even drive a standard.
@calimar28 Agreed and it's also about torque from the rear axle setup you have. Heck you can put 5:88's in these cars and they will really jump, but lousy gas mileage on the street.LOL
@@republicoftexas4651lol...why do you keep saying Lucas was mad...why the hell would he be mad he had nothing to do with the movie...it was written and directed by Floyd mutrux
I just learned about this movie today from a car guy, I'm 19 and I love the 50's and 60's, and I'm trying to see all the good car movies, and movies about rock'n'roll, 50's style, etc. I've already seen American Graffiti, and The Lords of Flatbush, and Happy Days, and The Wanderers, and I don't like Grease much, and I saw Stand By Me, Bullitt, The original Gone in 60 Seconds, The California Kid, Dirty Mary Crazy Larry, and Easy Rider, does anyone have any other good car movies?
Aloha Bobby & Rose, Two Lane Blacktop, Heart like a wheel, Return to Macon County, More American Graffiti, the Gumball Rallye, Vanishing Point. Their out there, just ask some of us old fart's who used to do this right of American passage, we used to call it cruising, & street racing. A by-gone part of Americana that police depts hunted, untill its extinction. Just like the Drive-in movie theaters. I can just hear the younger generation asking their parent's, hey mom, dad, what's Cruising, and what is a drive-in movie theater, dad said it's where I was conceived. Hey mom, what does conceived mean ?
@shamuck123 yes i agree Project x looks like a clown car now with the big rims and low profile tires . i hate big rims and low profile tires look like someone didn't know how to draw a car.
@jamesjdb On the market, the 428 hurts the sale. That's a pretty good indicator that people were not happy, and still are not happy that a 428 was used. Had Ford done that later on, they would have been in court. We learned this in 1977 when Olds used Chvy L 350s in the Cutlass platform, without telling the public. Best research :-)
Fun Fact: The Project X '57 Chevy Duke had was supposed to win in the movie script vs that Cobra, but the motor blew, so they had Simpson's Rail Job beat the Cobra instead..
The Project X 57 Chevy 350 went KABOOM in that scene!!!! That's oil spraying everywhere when she blew. I still have the issue of Popular Hot Rodding from the early 80's where they showed the new engine being built. I think Project X is electric powered now. I say,, "What a waste of machinery"! Newbomb Turk is HILARIOUS!! Especially when he farts the song, and gives directions to the caterers thru the community rose garden, where the Newbomb Turk memorial library is going to be built.
Nah, it was a 350. I have the 1980 popular hot rodding magazine showing them pulling and rebuilding the engine. Another 350 was installed back into it.
The Guy driving the Cobra was the owner of the Cobra. They wanted to use it but he said no way.I thought i read that The 57 Only had a 283 in it.I dont know for poaitive. If it would have been a bigger engine it could have turned out different
The 57 was owned by HOT ROD magnetize. When they filmed this it was an all out race. No speed up the film shit. Watch close and you will see white steam leaving the 57. They blew that motor up and then they put a new one in for the rest of the race and movie. Its true look up back issues of HOT ROD.
I know you can see the smoke come up over the roof and down the back blown motor! And i dont mean supercharged! I love when the cop says pull that yellow piece of shit over to the side and he jumps on it its just so badass! Leaves two 10 inch strips of rubber on the ground, That movie ruled!
ok all thats not steam or water...its nitrous...looks like he forgot to purge the system before the race, its running fine when hes asked to pull over and he bolts...couldnt do that with a blown motor...its NITROUS ....really watch the race then watch a real race and how they purge the system before racing see all that gas, looks like steam...lets get it right hot-rodders
@calimar28 By the same token, the Cobra weighed 2350lbs, had no drive shaft which gave it supreme torque -480 lb ft @ 3,500 rpm; 475 lb ft @ 3,700 rpm. The Belaire almost 1000 lbs more (3274 -210coupe) and even with an aftermarket V8 (502 Ram Jet- punched aluminum 427) bolted up to the 4L80E transmission, it would struggle to achieve the bhp and the torque of the Cobra.
David it could've blew a gasket or it could've threw the blower drive belt either one would've caused the engine smoke but I heard the driver grenaded the engine on the missed shift (don't know if was Danza of a stuntman driving)
When they filmed that scene the blower belt gets launched and kills the radiator so second place for the five seven. If you watch it you can see the coolant go over the car.
@@MrPhotog7 unless they put a Chevy engine in the Cobra it didn't have a big block the Ford 427 belongs to the FE series of engines and they are not big blocks
@harrylooker ProjectX was far from a period correct vehicle. It has been redone so many times that I lost count. The last time was 07' I think. However, nothing on the car is "Era Driven" and the 502 was dropped for a 427. The frame is not actually a real 1957 Frame. Basically, the car would not qualify as SS class, but the Cobra would. The electrodrive fans go way back and I actually used to use them in the early 70s, before the flex fans were perfected. Not sure of the actual history
@calimar28 Well being the expert you are (LOL) then you would clearly understand that a car "Jumping" has very little to do with horsepower, and everything to do with torque and the correct suspension set-up. A 200HP VW beetle can "Jump"
in reply to GetsumJ and calimar28 your both wrong and right. When one of you said you can put a blower on and do some tune ups to make 1000 horsepower you're right. But you were wrong about horsepower making the car bounce the suspension and torque does that, but it will bounce on it's own without stepping on the gas do to the suspension. Although I think the engine was 500 and something cubic inches. My 1993 Cadillac Sedan Deville bounces. It has 200hp only but 275 ft/lb of torque. When they lift the car up the tire/suspension gets pull down with gravity. Cars in the 2000's don't bounce anymore.
Although, I my reply is to a comment from 8 years avoid retarded all except for clarifying that engine in the 57 was the mighty 283 bored out to a “301”!
If you guys read Popular Hot Roding you would know Project X the 57 Chevy had a built L88 Corvette 427 in it. It had slicks and a 4 speed and 488 gears and a GMC 6:71 blower on it and was internally set up for the blower. On the strip they ran a low mix of Nitro in it. It was raced on the drag strip all the time. They were constantly trying to get lower ET's out of it.. Project X would of handed that 289 Cobra it's lunch. Sorry Ford guys but it's true, Project X at the time, had the best of every thing available in it.. Plus that Cobra was most likely a kit car, they've been around since the late 70's and probably had a stock 302 Windsor engine in it.
sidebar recon Stock vs. blown, that's fair. GM= Government Motors, as in $25 Billion bailout. I guess we know who the socialists are. Your enemy is not the Ford Motor Company but the government you endorse.
+Johnnyc drums no idiot GM = GM who like Dodge was LOANED money that was added to the BAIL OUT BILL since it needed congress vote to do. They paid back the loans with interest 7 years a head of time. So they never got "free" bail out money and the banks who did were sitting on a shit ton of US taxpayer backed first time buy loans. Only a complete idiot doesnt realize why they needed a bail out... if the banks went belly up then we owed 20x that amount in defaulted loans since they work like student loans where the Gov cosigns and bank holds and admins. If you die with a student loan then the bank goes to the gov for payoff.
***** ; I don't think GM has paid back one dime of that bailout. They'll never live down that "Government Motors" handle. It's too ingrained in the culture, at this point.
Johnnyc drums lol yeah no one cares about the hellcat etc... ok... They are not "owned" by fiat and even if they were big deal... but they merged with a split option since Dodge itself has paid back loans... They have had the same deal with Merc before and others. But yeah who cares since they went from 12th to 7th in 2 years and expected to be back at 5 in next two years means nothing at all. Oh yeah since you got such a nut twisted thinking GM and Dodge got free money and yet they didn't but someone else did. Ford not only got Congress to bust a uion agreement on retired people and active also which screwed them nicely. Ford also took tax breaks fed/state/local to keep plants in place and not close etc. So they got free money and still are till 2020 in some cases. They did this knowing they would end up with more than both borrowed combined and since they dragged their leg it ended up on a different bill and that allowed them to make bs commercials saying GM and Dodge took free money till the point GM and Dodge were ready to sue. Ford didn't want that and their free tax info public. Man they really fucked the retires... I bet most drive GM now.... best part is I get employee pricing on all three brands and wow useless on ford since normal dealer sales give you better pricing. Almost as good as their number 1 sold truck bullshit when they count fleet and 80% off chassis for uhaul/rider/fleetwood and Chevy/Dodge just count trucks sold to people.
LOVE THIS MOVIE , BUT THEY MADE A MISTAKE. IF IT WAS 1965 WHY WERE THERE CARS FROM THE 70'S PARKED ON THE SIDE OF THE STREET WHEN THEY WERE DRAG RACING
Ahh you got a good eye for detail my friend! They missed those 1970's cars in editing. Now if you watch American Graffiti, the editing was perfect. The movie was set in '62 and you only saw cars from the 40's, 50's, and early 60's :-)
DRock6906 sorry but you are wrong about that. in American Graffiti, if you watch closely you will see a bronze colored 1967 chevy with a bashed in driver,s side door. you have to look quick but it,s there.
@jamesjdb The grifo on had the Cleveland in few cars. The collectables were the 427 and the 454 in 70 - 72. They also used 327s. Had many Fords dude, First car was a 1970 Cyclone GT, followed by a 67 GT500 W coded conversion. (Vin available). I just went back to Chevy's when Ford went south. Today, Chevy builds supercars just like they did in the past. Ford builds cars, and gets Shelby to make them supercars. No offense, but I have had better builds with Chevys
+ffdztdr really? plugs, cold air, a pulley change and a tune on your uncle's shelby and see what it does. i love this movie better than american graffitti. milners car aint got shit on this one.
@calimar28 ZZ502 crate engine. All told, the aluminum big block makes over 460 horsepower. thanks to a streetable 9.6:1 compression ratio. From the looks of it, the blower is a 471, not the famous Dyer 671. And a 471 blower only adds about 100-150 hp if the compression is 10:1 or higher. The specs on ProjectX were 502HP with 585 lbs of torque. Not the "1000 to 1500" you claim. So I ask you junior, how long you been building engines again ?
@calimar28 Oh, well if Tony Danza said so, well who am I ? Hell, I ain't no movie star. I'm just a guy who has been building and racing both SS/AH, SS, and SCCA Solo2 AS cars since 1979. What the heck would I know ?
@calimar28 LOL, you're comparing ProjectX to a funny car ? Dude "Nitro Methane/ Methanol", "TVS or Roots14/71 Blowers" Hellooooo !!!! And they can get an easy 2500-5500hp. And they ARE NOT OEM 502 Crate engines, which Project X has. And as far as me "Looking" at the drag races, I am usually on the friggin track twice a month in the SS/L class.
