i find it fascinating that Russian counts cyan as a 'basic color' where in English it isn't categorized as one of the basic colors. this is just fascinating how languages divide what colors we do into what categories. i also plotted these colors on a color wheel as such: 3 basic hue colors (at hue 'angle' of 0, 120, and 240 degrees respectively) are: red, green, blue. These 3 basic hue colors can then be divided into 3 more: red-green gives us 'yellow' (at a 60 degrees hue value), green-blue gives us 'cyan' (which i think fits the 'sky blue' color in this video) (at a 180 degree hue value, opposite of red), blue-red gives us 'magenta' (which might fit 'violet') (at a 300 degree hue value). So all 6 of these hue colors are: red (0 degrees), yellow (60 degrees = 1/6 of a circle), green (120 degrees = 2/6 of a circle), cyan/sky-blue (180 degrees = 3/6 of a circle), blue (240 degrees = 4/6 of a circle), magenta/(violet?) (300 degrees = 5/6 of a circle). I find it fascinating that orange is missing in these '6 basic colors'. To get orange, we need to divide these into 12 basic colors. Orange is one of the '12 basic color hues'. Orange has a hue degree value of 1/12 of a circle, or 360/12 = 30 degrees. What i find most fascinating is the other colors don't have basic English names. But neither did 'cyan'. I don't count 'cyan' as a 'basic' color that we are taught as being counted as a basic color as a kid for us English speakers. Mathematically & scientifically, Russian is more accurate to deem it a basic color. But both languages have orange, which is really one of the 12 'basic color hues'. Maybe that all makes sense.

You say the "base" in синий is soft. Is that based solely on the consonant "н"? If so, then why is the base of красный, apparently, considered hard?
@AntoniaRomaker
@AntoniaRomaker 10 лет назад
David Emerling you can check the base (better - 'stem') being soft or hard by the initial form of the adjective - in the dictionary (singular, masculine, Nominative) - if the stem is followed by a vowel in the ending, which softens consonants (e.g. the ending -ий) then the stem is soft син-ий - soft красн-ый - hard оранжев-ый - hard голуб-ой - hard Here is a class, where I say which vowels soften consonants: part 1 - #3 Russian alphabet 1: Vowels 1 part 2 - #4 Russian alphabet 2: Vowels 2

Hi! I'm a native english speaker but i'm into the more exotic cultures and just happen to be obsessed with russian. I've recently started and i think i've been doing pretty good for being american. But may i just ask, In russian, you have to roll your letters and prounce certain letters very differently and use your tongue more often then english. Do you think this would make me develop a russian accent? I WOULD LOVE IT BY THE WAY.. So attracting and fierce,
@AntoniaRomaker
@AntoniaRomaker 10 лет назад
Music Town what exactly? Rolling your tongue? Well, when you pronounce soft consonants you kinda roll your tongue, yeah ;) p.s. that's great that you are interested in Russian! :) there are many different exotic cultures, why Russian? :)))))

Thank so much for awnsering, cant wait for it to come. And I choose Russian for lots reasons but i shall tell you 3 haha! 1. Russia is a beautiful country, And I have so much respect for all the people and there history. 2. If you are Russian and come to the USA, EVERYBODY will be in love with you and your accent. Down here Americans think foreigners are very attracting. 3. And last because Russian women are beautiful and i think it would be AMAZING to be apart of the nationallity

Now that there's no English example for the letter Ы, are there at least any easier ways on how to pronounce it?
@AntoniaRomaker
@AntoniaRomaker 10 лет назад
Jocelyn M. Garcia take the word 'it' for example, it is short 'i' and it is quite close to 'ы', but you pronounce it far back in your mouth, so the back of your mouth work hard here, I'll think of a better explanation and maybe make a video, devoted to this sound ;) + take a look at this class - #4 Russian alphabet 2: Vowels 2
