Tent Info:
- 3'x3'x6.5' hydroponics tent (amzn.to/2I82Px7)
- Simple wire rack (amzn.to/2FqC5Y5)
- One 8' diameter inline exhaust fan that vents out my window. It moves A LOT of air, around 800 CFM. This thing will legit turn your fingers into a puff of red mist if you're not careful. (amzn.to/2KwoSvR)
- Two 6' diameter intake tubes that pull in air from outside.
Hardware Info:
- Ten RX 580s
- Six RX 570s
- Six GTX 1060s
- Total hashrate: ~590 Mh/s
I had a few questions on Reddit about my hydroponics Ethereum mining operation, so I figured I'd upload a quick video showing my setup.
Safety is important in a small enclosed space:
- All rigs have a thermal stop limit of 80 degrees C.
- The exhaust fan and network switch operate on the same breaker, so if it flips and the fan turns off the rigs stop mining.
- No SATA risers, only PCIe and non-daisychained Molex.
- All rigs have Teamviewer installed so I can remote power down.
- WiFi smart outlets so I can cut power remotely if necessary (in the event Teamviewer doesn't work)

Wow, that is super convenient that you have 2 separate windows in a corner, to be able to do a intake on one side and exhaust on the other side.

Don't know why RU-vid wants me to look at this, but you can increase your fan efficiency by shorting the tube runs and bends. I crinkle mine up and wrap it with duct tape. Not pretty, but a whole lot more efficient. BTW I keep my plants in a grow tent and my mining rig on a closed rack that both exhaust out the same window. Never thought of using another tent. Nice and clean, I love it.

Great Video! Thanks for the focus on multiple safety systems, all types of mining can be dangerous. Mining in hot climates is especially challenging. Curious what a laser thermometer would read on the exterior of that tent.

Big thumbs up. Great vid. I'm really considering something similar for the coming months. How much heat comes off the tent? Essentially, how effective is it at eliminating the heat in the room? Lastly, any reason you opted for a tent instead of just building something more rigid out of plywood?
@Silarous
@Silarous 6 лет назад
samgraves2 I can think of a few reasons. The tent is cheaper, quicker to install/disassemble, and looks quite a bit nicer in the room than a big, plywood box. :)

Should try turning the fan on it's side, and run a tube on it and split that line into the amount of rack levels you have and do the same for the air inputs. Then could have focused air intake and exhaust per level with one fan. Maybe temps go down more?

Need an air intake fan so you dont burn out the fan u have. Ditch the tent build out of 3/4 inch plywood. Greatly reduce the noise

Did you read what the max CFM flow is for a 6-8" duct is? Particularly one with that many bends in it? Most literature says that you are going to need at least 12" ducting to move that much air.

590mhs is a relatively small setup for mining ethereum and with 22 cards I suspect many are quite old and low power. On my upstairs ring I am powering 13x 3080s 12x 3070s and 3x 2080ti I also have my PC mining with 2x 3090s. I have a couple of fans 110 120 watts and an extract fan 40w another one going in tomorrow. Also running a aircon unit when the heat becomes too much. The fuse tripped once randomly but other than that. Estimating my PC at around 1000w and the aircon included around 6800 watts. I hear no more than 7200w per ring so won't go further upstairs. I am currently filling up the downstairs see how we get on lol

Was it really necessary to have such huge powerful fans on such a small tent?? I'm considering doing this myself but only intend to use one 6 inch fan on the intake and one on the out take! This setup just looks a little over kill for what is probably necessary? But I don't know as I haven't built mine yet, so I'm open to your suggestions. Thanks.
@GreenTechNetwork
@GreenTechNetwork 6 лет назад
Well it definitely kept everything cool. I went with the larger fan just to ensure enough air movement to keep everything cool. I really can't say for sure if a 6 inch will move enough air, but it will likely be enough as mine is only 8 inch.

What if the fan dies at some point? You have something automated that would shut off everything based on temperature rising? Otherwise, it means fire!

As far as a know as long as your pumping out the hot air at a high rate.. Room temperature air being pumped in is fine. The air being pumped into the tent doesn’t need to be cold.

I would have the tubing go more towards the bottom & maybe even have the tubing loop around the bottom & cut holes / slits in the sides of the tubing to have the air spread out more as it comes out

Uh, where's the water? Hydro = water :-) Nice work on the tent. Would try positioning intakes and fans differently to see what works best - IMHO Where do you live? What's the outside temp? Where I live - you'd be pulling in 85 deg. air and 85% humidity (at night! LOL)
@rsheltonib
@rsheltonib 6 лет назад
85F isn't even 30C...
@albertperez7930
@albertperez7930 6 лет назад
Ryan Shelton I'm talking about ambient temperature outside (at night). Would be 90s during day (and humid). Venting doesn't seem like it would be effective in South Fl.. I dunno?
@rsheltonib
@rsheltonib 6 лет назад
I'm from FL and I don't really see an outside temperature of say, 35C being an issue. Since the GPU's can push 75C, the ambient temperature inside the grow tent is much higher than the temperature outside of the building. The laws of thermodynamics tells us that the heat - channeled through an industrial fan and hosing - will quite readily dissipate into an environment with a much greater area and a vastly lower temperature. It may feel hot at 90F, but that's only in the mid 30's in Celsius. It also helps that he keeps it in a room with AC and the vent flap open to allow for more passive heat dissipation.
@albertperez7930
@albertperez7930 6 лет назад
Ryan Shelton you bring up another question I have: if you vent and run AC at the same time - aren't you blowing the cold air outside? Not to mention - the AC needs an equal amount of return air to work correctly.. I've also heard the cold air needs to stick around to transfer the heat (eg. a massive fan will just make the cold air rush by too fast and not transfer the heat??)
@rsheltonib
@rsheltonib 6 лет назад
The intake for the blower is at the top of the tent, though. Since the rigs are within a confined space - the grow tent - the blower should also help create a positive pressure differential. Notice how the rectangular "vent" flap is at the bottom of the tent? This allows the AC cooled air in the room to enter from the bottom and pick up heat on its way up and out. I highly doubt the velocity of the air flowing in would have an impact because the flow is continuous. The rigs are, therefore, always in contact with 'cooler' air, right? However, the most thing is to get that hot air up and out. It might be a good idea to have two intakes - one high, one medium-low - so the top cards aren't getting baked by all the ones underneath.

@laurenparkerva
@laurenparkerva 6 лет назад
Red Bear does it reduce the hash rate?
@trappedcat3615
@trappedcat3615 6 лет назад
No, but proceed with caution -- undervolting too much can cause stability issues. Definitely research per the card. Here's discussion on the subject: bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=422773.0 I use Sapphire Trixx for AMD, but it is tricky if you're using the blockchain driver -- which is a must in my opinion. You need to reset and then set the undervolt percentages each time you power up your rig. And since Trixx core and mem clock does not work on the blockchain driver, you can have all that saved in Afterburner settings. That's just what I 'm doing though. On an 8 card rig, I use about 20 watts less per card (180 total) and each card is roughly 5 degress celsius cooler.

@GreenTechNetwork
@GreenTechNetwork 6 лет назад
SATA to PCIe 6 pin adapters are notorious for catching fire. SATA is rated for around 30 watts or so, but most GPUs can pull up to around 75 watts from the PCIe slot. This means you're running at over twice the rated wattage a SATA connection can handle. It is much safer to use direct PCIe 6 pin cables from the PSU to the risers.
