And 5 years later, I only have the Canon 5DS and the Nikon D800, for which I also bought complementary cameras with better high ISO performance (6D and Df). I’m buying another +5 years old camera, the Sony A7R II. That one has good high ISO performance, so a complementary lower resolution camera isn’t necessary. Plus it adds IBIS, much better manual focus, silent mode and I think 4K too. The saving grace is that the advances in cameras have been minimal. The R5, Z7, D850 or A7R IV all take marginally better images under normal conditions. So, unless cameras start taking holograms to be seen in 3D with special equipment, will be set for another 5 years at least. Tbh, would like to try an Olympus EM-5 II, not sure with what lenses though. And maybe it’s unnecessary with the A7R II, that’s also very small.

I think mirrorlockup doesn't work in Live View is because it doesn't need to be, since the mirror is already "up"

I know this is a rather "old" video (shot over 5 years before I saw it), but it is one of the most informative videos about photography that I've seen from ANYONE. I've primarily been shooting real estate for several decades, and I just wanted you to know how much I appreciate your videos, in general. And, how much I appreciate THIS particular video. Hey wait a minute at the end of the video you referred to the 5D5SR as having the same essential body and guts and screen etc as the 5 D 3... Not so! It has a geared and motorized mirror for low vibration with timing to separate mirror and shutter to further dampen vibrations and quietness, it has as well screen LCD and led data on screen, a substantially reinforced bottom plate and so forth along with two high speed CPUs for data crunching the huge files...so come on!!! Not the same camera at all but lucky for us, it is a familiar professional camera and the screen? What is the difference? So it is not an iPhone quality on its back. A touch screen on a crazy heavy camera like this? I would drop it myself. So this photographer is super content with what I have here myself and the pictures are extraordinary which in the end is the bottom line of course.

I love when canon out weights the Nikon we go to Lightroom and just say that with a little adjustment it is just as good. really! Nikon's pictures at 6400 are flat and show no texture, but you call this lower noise. I call this compensation. Film calls this grain. you can't have sharpness without some grain or noise. And your review about the Canon not having a touch screen and swing out screen. Let those toys for people like yourself that are more wanting junk on the camera than less just to take great pictures. Sorry Tony if you had listen to Canon on why they made this camera you would not have been looking so foolish and trying to think it is replacing the 5D MK lll. Why is it others got it right but you didn't.

@6:15 you don't need mirror lockup in Live-View mode because it's already locked up for live view to work and does not drop for the picture to be taken. Not due to camera beta, it's as designed. Yes I am commenting on a 6+ year old video. No, I don't know why.

Finally someone actually tested one's older glass with the 50 megapixel sensor which I had done myself and have written several times about the fact that with a high res sensor those supposedly lesser lenses have plenty of resolution and thus the 5DSR can upgrade all that glass you already own. It is easily proved so don't be suckered into buying a set of new lenses until you check your own stable of lenses as I have done finding in my case at least that every lens I have were far superior on the new body.

Seriously what happened to "photography" now...... all everyone does is nit pick on EVERY single detail such as dynamic range, iso performance, sharpness etc. It's all brand bashing and comparing a camera to justify that it's better, while pixel peeping. All cameras ,even old film, cameras are able to produce beatiful images.

Mrlolibre We have an entire book dedicated to photographic techniques (composition, mood, storytelling, etc). Sometimes, like in this video, we dig into the technical aspects of the cameras. For some of us, that's part of what we enjoy about photography. Mrlolibre I totally agree with you. It seems that cies are trying to sell their products trough photographers, and for some reasons they only see the technical, boring side of it. Never I see creativity, or talk about originality or art, only technical side of the SENSOR, boringgggggggggg. I am not trashing Tony cause he does a great job, and he has class...... But DR is getting too much attention, specially when Lightroom plugins can do the trick with HDR. All cameras are really great, they seems to be tweeked and has a different feel and purpose. So people, just choose your camera that you feel attracted to, and have fun. The rest can be done with PS and all these photo plugins available to you

I have recently acquired a D810 and it works just fine, it depends what your subject is but you're getting a lot of camera for the money. Some people say that D810 images tend to be a little grainy but fundamentally it's down to the skill of the photographer to properly capture the image with the equipment. For Nikon users, the upgrade from D800 to D810 is worth it in my opinion. Nikon D810 Excellent

MrDrunkenknight The DPReview studio RAW samples are available so you can download and play with them. The 5Ds-R with 85/1.8 USM outrresolves the Pentax 645Z with the 90mm macro. Canon's 85mm f/1.8 USM (not an L lens) while a decent performer is not not top of the range by any means. I'm sure Tony's 70-200mm f/2.8 L II is noticeably better at resolving detail.

The best way to compare both systems is not through the MEGAPIXEL wars...obviously the 50MP >>> 36MP. But if both cams are taken by photographers who knows how to use it...then perhaps up rez Nikon to 43MP and down rez Canon to 43MP. Use similar lens and then compare the DYNAMIC RANGE...clipping in both highlights and blacks...etc. Both will be great cameras. IT is up to the user. I have been going back to Medium Format Film, 6x7 Mamiya RB because getting sick of measurebators. Go out and take photos and enjoy. USE WHAT YOU HAVE.

The d810 has a shutter delay setting of 1, 2 or 3 seconds that can be applied to any mode. I would have thought 3 second delay should be enough to avoid needing a remote trigger.

Bowie Sensei press once to lock mirror up, press again to fire, 3 seconds later it takes a photo. Works on mine. Also if you press mirror lock up, dont press to fire the camera will take a photo anyway after 30 seconds

Bowie Sensei Ah, I see, you're using the Exposure Delay with MUP. That's smart, just wish it were automatically linked to MUP so I didn't have to switch modes and then also dig through the menus. The 30 second tip will be useful in a pinch, thanks!

Is it my imagination or did the 5Ds-R retain highlights slightly better than the other two? If you could shoot the 5Ds-R with 1/3 of a stop more exposure then wouldn't the shadows be cleaner? Also how much more can 5Ds-R files be sharpened?

desk0z Agreed. There is NOBODY that compares to them on RU-vid in photography, period. I love Jared Polin even though his seemingly arrogant personality brings in some disdain. However being understanding, open minded, technical, patient, and engaging (the fact they frequently respond to comments for instance) like they are is what puts them WAY ahead of anyone else as far enjoying the education you get. Boy do you ever get educated with these guys.

Rather odd statements at the end. The sensor is the most important part, and they did add their latest digic processor in there at that time. Then, who wants an electronic viewfinder? I hope DSLRs will not move into that, it'll eat up more battery. Might as well but a mirrorless A7IIR then. And the top screen is like a casio watch? :D I guess we need to ask them for a 42 inch 4k OLED display next iteration ;-) Anyway, I'm guessing it was a rant :)

Thanks for making this video. I have the 5DS and a 24-70 f2.8 in my checkout cart right now and I'm having second thoughts after listening to your comments in the last couple of minutes of your video. It's gonna be about $5,750 in Adorama for a 3-yr drop and spill warranty compared to $6,550 at B&H with similar warranties. Maybe I should wait for the Canon 5d4

Strange that the D810 doesn't allow exposure delay when the D800 does. it's in the camera settings plus you can express how long the camera waits before triggering the shutter. I'd suggest checking.

hello Tony and Chelsea good video, I like what Tony says at the end about the 5DSr, it's long in the tooth, no wifi, no gps, no 4k, no IBIS, no electronic view finder, no touch screen, old 80's casio watch Lcd screen, other than the new sensor the 5DSr is a Dinosaur, and Canons thinking is old, and I wish that Tony would go out of his way to tell Canon directly his thoughts and kick there ass a little bit, because Canon doesn't seem to be in touch with what is going on in the Camera market, unless they are developing many things behind closed doors with the plan to hit the camera market strong all at once down the road, but it seems like they just want to play it safe, and milk out the DSLR market for as long as they can, and they go out of there way to take features out of a camera, just so it won't compete with one of there other cameras, they won't put 4k in the 5Ds because they don't want to compete with there way more expensive 4k cameras, and even though the 5DS is in the same body as the 5Dlll, witch has a headphone jack, they take the feature out of the 5DS so it won't compete with the 5Dlll or 5D4, I am just hoping that the new Sony A7r ll or A9 or whatever new comes out from Sony has all the features the world wants, like fully articulating touch screens that include using touch to go through the menus, 4K, wi fi, faster auto focus, IBIS, all the bells and whistles that modern technology gives us, Personally I like electronic view finders, features like touch focus and shoot in one touch, touch focus for video, using touch to go through menus and view images, and now that Zeiss just announce there new Batis 25 and 85 lenses specifically for the Sony ff e mount with auto focus, Sony is getting more and more interesting in the camera market, and I am hoping the rumor is true that Sony is about to come out with a new top of the line mirrorless with higher mp than the A7r, hopefully it will have all the bells and whistles

I have used both and I can say if you love your post editing RAW at 50 MPix then the 5DS has to be your choice. I just did a session in the Post edit studio and the results that the 5DS pump out allow you MUCH more editing options than the MarkIII. Everyone talks about technical aspects but you need to address POST EDITING. That is where it shines for the pro or artist. For weddings you only get a few shots of the same shoot. Using RAW at 50 its like have an insurance policy. So to conclude the Mark III is awesome no doubt but the 5DS is built for software and \POST EDITING thats the real fun in creativity.

Did you use the same lens on both bodies? Nikon has a 24-120mm F4, not a 24-105mm F4. Or aftermarket?

Wise words at the end there, Tony! I'm still clinging to my D800, but I wish Nikon would release an A7(R/S) competitor soon. The Sony camera bodies are tempting, but the accessories from Nikon keep me holding out for an F-mount FF mirrorless... Oh the agony!

Kinda seems unfair to me that the 5DSR's resolution got axed for the comparison against the III and D810, which is the whole point of the 5DSR. It still seems pricey to me, but if you want a no frills camera purely for still shots then the 5DSR is the camera to get. The 5DSR looks better whilst pixel peeping at the same resolution. I can only imagine how capable it'd be at 50MP with one of Canon's top lenses. Nikon might have a better DR, but honestly, how many people are actually going to under/over expose as bad as these tests try to show?

The 5DSR is at native resolution when compared to the D810, with the D810's shot being scaled up to 50mp. They were only scaled down when comparing noise.

Great video, good idea to put some tips in it, like the one about merging pictures taken at different shutter speeds. Also, the part from the car is better with the setup you used today, rather than trying to get Justin to shoot parts from the back. :)

The tech on the top LCD info screens may not have changed in years, but who cares!? They perform perfectly and use almost no battery.

And they don't screw up and die! Why do I need something high tech for when I only look at it to quickly verify settings? I could not care less if it's in full color or talks to me. I also personally hate electronic viewfinders. I just grabbed a 5DSR when I got one direct from Canon for $2700. I like getting things halfway through their market life as all the kinks are worked out! I have GPS and WiFi in my other bodies, and it was really important until I got it. Then I found I hardly ever used it. Don't go for brands, don't go for gadgets - get what supports what you do. Nikon and Canon lenses even tend to not overlap much, and a metabones will let you use a variety of lenses on your Sony or Lumia if video is your gig. I was a Nikon person for 25 years, and then a Canon person for 18 with some Pentax mixed in the whole time. Still have ALL my old equipment, save for some stuff from the last decade.

Tony Northrup You all said you fell in love with the D810 when you tested it, but couldn't switch because of your favorite Canon lens. Did the 5DS-R put any thoughts of switching regardless of the lens to rest?

Amber Conover Oh, I'll definitely grab the 5DS-R over the D810. We had to send the loaner back, and now I'm back to using the D810 for shoots, and it pains me a little knowing I could be getting sharper pictures. Had to shoot a big group for a huge banner print this morning, and I feel like I'm cheating my clients :)

Darrell Young Right--that's the only fair way to compare sharpness. Otherwise, you'd be dropping sharpness from the Canon. We provide the raw files if you'd like to do it a different way.

Upscaling an image past its native size requires interpolation, which tends to reduce sharpness, often significantly. Therefore, your sharpness comparison of an interpolated image with a non-interpolated image seems unfair and invalid.

Tony you mention no mirror lockup function in live view. But when you shoot in live view the mirror is already up so you don't need a separate mirror lockup function. Then you compose your image on the LCD and release the shutter with a timer delay or with the remote cable for a vibration free exposure.

Hi guys....I enjoyed your cool review.I have a question though;as we all know that sharper resolution can be extracted from a combination of high megapixel censor and sharp glass.Now that the Sony A7 R (A7 series) camera has Zeiss support,with the launch of Zeiss Batis 25(f-2) and 85(f-1.8).....which camera has the most resolution combo thats affordable (excluding Zeiss Otus as they are way too expensive) for landscape ane wedding photographers? Please do a review on Zeiss Batis 25(f-2) and 85(f-1.8) lenses with the native Zeiss FE 55(f-1.8) as they all are verry sharp. Ane also a Tamron 15-30(f-2.8) VC Review too

Great images but not for that price. It's way out of my price range at $4000 anyway. That's a lot of money for just a new sensor. I'm still waiting for Canon to upgrade the 70D. I want the articulating touch screen, wi-fi and gps. Hopefully Canon upgrades the touch screen to more like a smart phone. Anyone heard anything about the upgrade to the 70D, which I'm guessing will be the 80D?

Thanks, I learned a great deal... about the new Canon. But, please remember Canon does NOT want "us" to use its DSLR's for video, which is why there is no 4k! They want us to BUY an EOS c100 Mk. ii or a C300 Mk II. Nikon doesn't make video cameras, so no conflict like Canon's still vs. video depts. Also, old guys like me, like "old fashoned DSLR's"... Ask Leica about losing market share by not really updating their "old" designs.

You haven't properly compared the Canon/Nikon color. Nikon's algorithms are wrong, resulting in 10-20% greyer color than my eye registers. That's because it mutes color by taking it away whereas Canon takes a page from the Impressionist painters, muting color by adding complementaries. This way they get much more lively and true color and color relationships. Nikon mechanics are superb but they need to get away from Caravaggio's idea of color.

Hi !I own the Eos 80D and the Canon 70-200 IS f2.8 ( and also the Canon 85mm f1.8 )I would like better low light performance when I take Pictures of my kids playing Soccer.Should I og for the 5dsr, the 5d mk3, wait for the 6d mk2 or switch to Nikon D500 ?I dont need 10fps as I think the 80d is fast enough. but as I wrote, I need better low light performance

I think you all are cool and I like the review... but I'm not a troll from hell. lol. What did you shoot this video with, is my question :) I'm trying to decide between these three, and the A7R II. I'm throwing the A7R II out the window, as it seems like a cluster F to me, even though I do like some of it's features, a lot. So.. I'm thinking about staying with Nikon, although I've wanted a MK III for years. Glass is not an issue since I've shot with a used $75 18-55 3.5 most of my life. I like warping my landscape shots to look pretty crazy, but I've been hired to shoot 2 weddings, (not having ever done any portrait of live events of any kind lol) so it's time to full-frame it. I realize some unhappy soul may chew me apart on this, but in your opinion, Tony.. which is the single best all-around camera for everything? Landscape, portrait, wedding, video, etc (please). I can run anything and I can post with anybody. Doesn't matter. Thanks for doing what you do. It helps a poor hack like myself. :)

For shadow recovery and dynamic range the D810 is still better. Personally, I didn't see any 'noticeable' improvement over the image from the D810 as stated in the review. It really must have looked better in the studio. I'm watching at 4K on the iMac 5K The D810 sensor is a better sensor for DR and shadow recovery. Those have always been weak area for Canon. If you need to pull 3-4EV from shadow there's never been any competition for Nikon vs Canon sensors. They are also better on the high end. That said, the Sony a7r ii is a big improvement on the D810 with even more resolution. I fully expect it will be considerably better than the 5DS-R even with fewer MP, especially if you're needing to zoom in to 3:1 to even see the difference. I really can't wait to see more reviews on the a7r ii, especially since it delivers on MP and does pretty great video and even 4k video. It won't replace my a7s, but it's a wonderful looking camera. Canon is slipping mightily these days from my perspective.

Great video! BTW just for kicks it would be interesting to see how the detail compares to the GH4 or similar cameras. Not sharpness or megapixel. Just detail. I find that my mirrorless makes my DSLR look slightly out of focus. Similar to de 5Ds and 5DmkIII shot at the beginning

lol... It's amazing how it is the simple things that can force a decision e.g. avoiding the suffering of analysis paralysis. lol... I had to stop watching the video when it finally clicked about the shutter. For the Canon, sure I understood that I had to buy a tripod, but then when it turns out that I would have to buy another item to do remote pressing the shutter.... I was like, no app so I can just use my cellphone? lol.... yeah... it is official.... 50 or no 50, I think i am going to give the Sony an honest shot.... Thanks again for all of your help. When you get a chance, it would be cool if you did a 5 minute video on what you mean by sharp lenses with some examples for Sony, Nikon, and Canon.... Thanks again.

My only question is, when hand holding (which is 99.9% of the shots I believe most take) sharpness is lost but Dynamic Range and Noise is the same. I really, really, think the only time one is using a tripod with mirror lockup is strictly for testing how sharp or in a studio, and occasionally landscape photographers. If hand holding, the sharpness benefit of the 5DS-R not being on a tripod with mirror lockup would likely be lost or exactly the same as the Nikon 810 but the 810's Dynamic Range and better Noise handling is not affected by tripods or hand holding and would put it ahead I think for 99% of the time and situation one isn't using a tripod with mirror lockup. For me, it's face detection in the viewfinder is the most important feature which Canon doesn't have.

Thank you for doing this test. Of course people are going to complain and I'm going to just say I wished they used a prime lens, such as a 24mm, 35mm or even a 50mm. I know that's asking a lot since people are in love with zoom lenses, but not all zoom lenses are created equal, especially from different manufacturers. However, a 50mm lens is the closest to having standard sharpness across the board from manufacturer to manufacturer. Overall though, the Canon definitely had more sharpness overall, but that should be expected with more megapixels.

radishfever The mirror's up, but it doesn't automatically have the delay. It's just a minor inconvenience that could be easily rectified with software.

to eliminate blur/shaking from the mirror slapping up, you need a small delay between the mirror and the shutter. This is what the 5ds(r) lets you do you in one click of a button.

If you take a picture with your hand youre shaking the camera(more than you think), the additional seconds lets the tripod settle before it takes the frame. Also, LV takes a lot of battery power and is no good for night/astro photography, it fucks up your eyes when youre trying to see in the dark. Ideally, you get a remote on a 2+ sec timer and solid tripod. If the mirror is already up the only thing moving is the shutter mechanism. What the 5ds does is, it eliminates the need to go in live view so you can use your hand directly on the camera and not worry about the shake or the mirror slapping up right before taking the picture, it delays those three actions.

Conclusion: even if you cannot get better imagine with the camera already on the market, with the features it has, the non-4K videos etc etc... it's better to wait what Nikon is gonna put on the market after the D810. Seeing that there's not much difference already, it's gonna be terrible for Canon. I do like the Sony also, would have been great to see the A7RII side by side also, what amazing progress they did since the first alpha... Thank you guys for the videos! It's very nice to watch it

Are we only looking at shadow detail for DR. I think the Canon had way more detail in the highlights. Which says they over exposed the Nikon shot to have more shadow detail and then didn't mention the highlights (suspect). Intentional? IDK. At this point in the game if you love your Nikon, you have a great option (I think). If you love you Canons, you have a great option (I know).

These type of comparisons trouble me. I am in no way sticking up for Nikon here, the d810 is way over due for an upgrade...but...I am a graphic designer and if any photographer sends me a file to place in an ad that has been either up scaled or down scaled, that is an instant reject. You can do it for news and sports, but not products. Analogue film is like an oil canvas, it is organic. Digital photos are like a Roman floor mosaic. They are just a grid of tiny coloured squares. If I asked you to double the size of the mosaic, that's easy; replace each single tile with 4, and there you go-up scaled. Now try up scaling your floor by 37% You instantly run into compromise problems. Some tiles will be lost and some will have to change hue to fit, resulting in blur- regardless of you going up or down by an arbitrary amount. If you really want to pixel peep compare different sensors you need to physically move the lower res camera forward so it fills a crop area of its bigger rival.

I'm sorry but this test is absolutely not reliable. If you buy two Sigma lenses are different each other. Why not take a test using original lens ? I find this a waste of time.

my 85mm Zaiss otus can resolve 35mg pix out of 36.3 on my d810 there is onley one more lens that can do that and that is Zaiss 135mm f2 even zaiss otus 55mm cant resolve more than 33mg pix acording to dxomarck

Is the dynamic range of the 5DsR "called" bad because it is alot sharper and therefore has more noise and needs to be processed to get the better balance between noise and sharpness As when you raised the shadows it still had good amount of detail for ISO100 compared to ISO64
