Read a full article on MIG welding pipe here: www.weldingtipsandtricks.com/mig-welding-pipe.html
This video is on MIG welding pipe in the 5G position using an Esab Rebel 205 multi-process inverter welder with .035" ER70S6 wire and c25 gas.
-Root was welded at 18 volts and 210 ipm
-Fill pass welded at 19.5 volts and 200 ipm
-Cover pass welded at 18 volts and 180 ipm
Before MIG welding pipe, it's a good idea to start on a plate. If you can weld a 3G and a 4G plate, those settings and techniques can be used on pipe, provided the thickness is similar and the bevel and gap are similar.

a timely video for me, I'm currently welding out a heap of fabricated lobsterback 36 inch diameter schedule 10 elbows for a water pipeline with MIG, but we're welding the root from the inside downhill, back grinding and then running the fill and cap uphill on the outside of the pipe, a few of the guys are running a standard CV MIG in short circuit, one of the guy's is running a Lincoln STT, and I'm running a Fronius TPS2700 on pulse. I'd love to see a video with you running pulse MIG out of position, I tried the three setups, and found I was able to run fairly hot and fast uphill with the Fronius on pulse, 480 IPM and 25 volts for the downhill root from the inside of the pipe, 440 IPM and 24 volts from 6-9 o'clock, and 600 IPM and 27 volts from 9-12 o'clock doing the fill and cap in one pass, I'm finding if a do a back and forward whip coming up from 6-9, coming forward and then back it fill in and wet it out, and from 9-12 just push it uphill a bit as if its running a flat bead it come out with a very nice profile and looks like it was welded flat.

Interesting, on my place we just blast a root in with positioner 1.5 mm landing 3 tacs 120 degrees to hold it then do a Christmas tree kinda pattern for cap basically move across right to left move up to the middle of you root small triangle move back to the right make sure you hold on the edge as not to undercut then go across to the left half thickness over your first bead as it rolls.

A quick question, please. I went through your MIG welding series and have tried many of the techniques and practice items. My question concerns welding thin wall 4130 chrome-moly tubing, such as that used in homebuilt aircraft fuselages and empennage structures. Historically these were gas welded (oxyacetylene) or TIG. The tubing wall thicknesses are (generally 0.028/0.035/0.049/0.058.. I'd like to MIG weld the structures if possible (some manufactures use a MIG process). Using your charts it appears for the 0.035 wall thickness the settings would be 35 amps and 70 ips... does that sound about right? Any recommendations or comments?Thanks!

On my Millermatic 210 the wire speed is just a setting, not and actual IPM. Is there a way to calculate actual wire speed? Same for voltage. How many volts is the #4 setting?

Hey Jodie. Hope all is going good thank you for the videos. So you mentioned that you were dialing in your settings so that you didn’t have any spatter. Is that the best practice for welding. Dialing in your settings so that you have no spatter. I have it all the time. And where can I get the etching solution. Do you sell it at your store? Thanks again
@weldingtipsandtricks
@weldingtipsandtricks 4 года назад
I try to find settings that produce little or no spatter but the end result is the main thing...sometimes I will tolerate spatter to get a flatter weld going uphill. the etching solution is a passivation solution designed for stainless. not sure where to get it these days but ferric chloride pcb etchant from amazon also works pretty well for carbon steel. wear nitrile gloves and ppe if you use it
